Download or read book The Oaten Flute written by Renato Poggioli and published by Cambridge : Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a note discussing his writing plans, Renato Poggioli wrote that the book he was working on "tries to reconstruct and reinterpret the bucolic ideal as presented in the idyllic or quasi-idyllic literature of the past. The emphasis lies on the modern bucolic tradition, from the early Renaissance to the seventeenth and eighteenth century neoclassicism and preromanticism, from Sannazaro to Rousseau, but attention is also paid to the great classical precedent, as well as to the conscious or unconscious survivals of the bucolic attitude in the literature of our times. Each chapter or section deals with a separate theme and is centered on the critical analysis of one or more literary texts, typical or representative of that theme." With his death in an automobile accident on May 3, 1963, Poggioli's projected book remained unfinished. -- Foreword.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Re-Visions of Shakespeare: Essays in Honor of Robert Ornstein is a tribute to one of the most prominent Shakespeareans in the last half of the twentieth century, past president of the Shakespeare Association of America, and author of Shakespeare's Comedies: From Roman Farce to Romantic Mystery, and Other texts. Twelve original contributions by an international group of scholars, including some of the most prominent working in Shakespeare studies today, use a variety of theoretical perspectives to address issues of contemporary import in the dramatic texts. Janus-like, the collection suggests the directions of Shakespeare studies at the outset of the new millennium while considering their roots in the last.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene is among the most important literary products of the Elizabethan age, and the vast sweep of its moral, political and social concerns tells us more about the age than any other work. This volume, first published in 1989, offers detailed readings of each of the poem’s seven books, along with introductory chapters on Spenser’s career, and the roots of the poem in the English and continental traditions. Humphrey Tonkin pays particular attention to the work’s political and cultural role and its contribution to the development of Elizabethan ideology. A comprehensive analysis, this reissue will be of particular value to literature students and academics alike.
