  • Author : Richard Wadge

  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Arrowstorm written by Richard Wadge and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2009-03-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles the overwhelming importance of the military archer in the late medieval period. The longbow played a central role in the English victory at the battles of Crecy and Agincourt. Completely undermining the supremacy of heavy cavalry, the longbow forced a wholesale reassessment of battlefield tactics. Richard Wadge explains what made England's longbow archers so devastating, detailing the process by which their formidable armament was manufactured and the conditions that produced men capable of continually drawing a bow under a tension of 100 pounds. Uniquely, Wadge looks at the economics behind the supply of longbows to the English army and the social history of the military archer. Crucially, what were the advantages of joining the first professional standing army in England since the days of the Roman conquest? Was it the pay, the booty, or the glory? With its painstaking analysis of contemporary records, Arrowstorm paints a vivid portrait of the life of a professional soldier in the war which forged the English national consciousness.

Book The Oak Book of Southampton of A D 1300 Vol 1

Download or read book The Oak Book of Southampton of A D 1300 Vol 1 written by P. Studer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oak Book of Southampton, of A. D. 1300, Vol. 1: Including the Anglo-French Ordinances of the Ancient Guild Merchant of Southampton The writing is not all by the same hand, or even of the same date. The earliest portion of the book, comprising Chapters IV and V, is a specimen of good penmanship of the beginning of the fourteenth century, and has been assigned by competent judges to the year (c.) 1300. Internal and external evidence both go to prove that this is the correct date. Many of the other documents are dated and belong for the most part to the fourteenth century; only two or three entries of less importance, confined to Chapters I, II, XII and XVII, belong to the fifteenth, or even sixteenth, centuries. The language of the oldest and most important entries is Norman French (or, as it is now often called, anglo-french); other entries are in a mediaeval Latin, which often is but thinly disguised French or English; only a few later notes are in English. More need not be said here, as the question will be fully dealt with in another volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • Pages : 488 pages

Download or read book Swindled written by Bee Wilson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bad food has a history. Swindled tells it. Through a fascinating mixture of cultural and scientific history, food politics, and culinary detective work, Bee Wilson uncovers the many ways swindlers have cheapened, falsified, and even poisoned our food throughout history. In the hands of people and corporations who have prized profits above the health of consumers, food and drink have been tampered with in often horrifying ways--padded, diluted, contaminated, substituted, mislabeled, misnamed, or otherwise faked. Swindled gives a panoramic view of this history, from the leaded wine of the ancient Romans to today's food frauds--such as fake organics and the scandal of Chinese babies being fed bogus milk powder. Wilson pays special attention to nineteenth- and twentieth-century America and England and their roles in developing both industrial-scale food adulteration and the scientific ability to combat it. As Swindled reveals, modern science has both helped and hindered food fraudsters--increasing the sophistication of scams but also the means to detect them. The big breakthrough came in Victorian England when a scientist first put food under the microscope and found that much of what was sold as "genuine coffee" was anything but--and that you couldn't buy pure mustard in all of London. Arguing that industrialization, laissez-faire politics, and globalization have all hurt the quality of food, but also that food swindlers have always been helped by consumer ignorance, Swindled ultimately calls for both governments and individuals to be more vigilant. In fact, Wilson suggests, one of our best protections is simply to reeducate ourselves about the joys of food and cooking.
