Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nutrition of the Infant In his endeavour to make his practice as exact and scientific as possible, the author was at one time greatly discouraged by the fact that infant feeding apparently presented almost insuperable obstacles to its rational management in health, and to exact diagnosis and treatment in the presence of disorder. While this applied, to some extent, to the management of breast feeding, it applied with greater force to substitute feeding. In hospital and private practice he was only too familiar with the various attempts to meet the requirements, and had frequent opportunities of testing the results of practically every method at all commonly used. But there were many failures, and, what was even more unsatisfactory, the 'successes' were achieved by means so essentially empirical that they taught no lesson for the future. It must be confessed that others were satisfied where the author was greatly discontent. For it was said to be unreasonable to expect that 'artificial feeding' should be so conducted that its results could be at all comparable with those of breast feeding. This attitude seemed to be the more serious in view of the number of women unable or unwilling to nurse their infants. It was under these circumstances that the author turned to the work of Dr. T.M. Rotch, of Boston. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infant Feeding The systematic attempt to place the nourishment of the infant upon a truly scientific basis was first begun by Czerny and Keller when they published their epoch-making book in 1905. Previous to the appearance of this volume, though much scientific and practical work had been done on the nutrition of the infant, it was all more or less frag mentary, and there had been no extended attempt to sepa rate the good from the bad. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Infant: Nutrition and Management This little volume is founded on a series of lectures which, from time to time, I have given to students attending at courses held by the Queen's Hospital for Children, the Medical Graduates' College and Polyclinic, the National Association for the Prevention of Infant Mortality, and other medical societies. Some of these lectures have already been published in part, or in whole, in medical journals, and for permission to republish I have to thank the editors of The Lancet, The Practitioner, The Medical Press and Record, The Clinical Journal, The American Practitioner, American Medicine, Pediatrics, Archives of Pediatrics, and The British Journal of Children's Diseases. In preparing these lectures in book form, it has been necessary to edit somewhat freely, for the same ideas recur over and over again in different lectures. Book Infant Food and Infant Feeding Classic Reprint

Download or read book Infant Food and Infant Feeding Classic Reprint written by Edgar Everhart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infant Food and Infant Feeding From various causes, it happens that a large percentage of infants are deprived of their natural nourishment, and it becomes necessary to resort to some substitute to sustain life. This deprivation of their natural food is sometimes complete, but more often it is only partial. It is difficult to say whether this percentage of infants deprived of mothers' milk is on the increase or not. Judging from the number of so-called Infant Foods on the market, the number of children who derive at least a part-of their sustenance from this artificial source must be much greater than is commonly supposed. In many cases, no doubt, it is absolutely impossible for the child to obtain nourish ment from the mother. Under such circumstances, of course resort must be had to some other food. Whenever the food is other than that provided by nature, too much care cannot be exercised in se lecting that which most resembles, in its chemical and physiological properties, that most suitable of all infant foods - mothers' milk. Book The Road to Good Nutrition Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Road to Good Nutrition Classic Reprint written by Lydia Jane Roberts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Road to Good Nutrition All parents want their children to be well nourished. If this de sire is to be realized, the parents should have in mind a picture of what a well-nourished child is like and what their own child, with his particular heredity, is capable of attaining. If they will learn to recognize the characteristics of a well-nourished child, as a farmer or a housewife recognizes the characteristics of an excellent ear of corn or loaf of bread, they will be better able to direct their children along the road to good nutrition. If they have no standard by which to judge the child's nutrition they may think that it is good when in reality it is poor. A description of the well-nourished child is given in this bulletin, with a general outline of the care that should bring about this desirable condition. Some of the signs that indicate nutritional failure in a child are described, and the chief hazards to nutrition at various periods of a child's life are pointed out, so that parents, with the advice of their physician, may recognize and deal with these hazards. An effort has been made to give a general view of the problem of nutritional guidance throughout the period of growth, with special at tention to the continuity of the child's life. Throughout the bulletin emphasis has been put on the positive side of good nutrition and the methods of attaining it. Book Practical Infant Feeding Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Infant Feeding Classic Reprint written by Lewis Webb Hill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Infant Feeding Iibut rather to amalgamate the best points taught in this country and abroad into what I hope IS a homogeneous whole. It 1s desirable, of course, to make any subject as simple and as easily understandable as possible, and infant feeding need not be made complicated, but, on the other hand, any presenta tion which does not explain underlying processes and the basis of symptoms is not enough for the thinking practitioner of today. As I heard an eminent Philadelphia pediatrist say not long ago, there is at present a tendency to try to make infant feeding so easy for the physician that there is a chance of for getting whether or not the methods used may be suitable for the baby. The general standard of infant feeding in America has, however, improved greatly in the last ten years owing to the increased interest that general practitioners have taken in it, which is shown by the continually increasing numbers coming for instruction to the large post-graduate schools, such as the Harvard Graduate School of Medicine and the New York post-graduate School. To such men as this I respectfully offer this book, and sincerely hope that they may find it of value and interest. I wish especially to thank Dr. W. W. Howell for so kindly consenting to write the chapter on Premature Infants; Dr. R W. Lovett and other members of the staff for permitting me to use several pictures and Roentgen-ray plates taken from their cases in the Children's Hospital; Mr. J. V. Footman for kindly making the prints and taking many pictures, and the publishers for their many courtesies. Book Inventing Baby Food

  • Author : Amy Bentley
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2014-09-19
  • ISBN : 0520283457

Download or read book Inventing Baby Food written by Amy Bentley and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food consumption is a significant and complex social activity—and what a society chooses to feed its children reveals much about its tastes and ideas regarding health. In this groundbreaking historical work, Amy Bentley explores how the invention of commercial baby food shaped American notions of infancy and influenced the evolution of parental and pediatric care. Until the late nineteenth century, infants were almost exclusively fed breast milk. But over the course of a few short decades, Americans began feeding their babies formula and solid foods, frequently as early as a few weeks after birth. By the 1950s, commercial baby food had become emblematic of all things modern in postwar America. Little jars of baby food were thought to resolve a multitude of problems in the domestic sphere: they reduced parental anxieties about nutrition and health; they made caretakers feel empowered; and they offered women entering the workforce an irresistible convenience. But these baby food products laden with sugar, salt, and starch also became a gateway to the industrialized diet that blossomed during this period. Today, baby food continues to be shaped by medical, commercial, and parenting trends. Baby food producers now contend with health and nutrition problems as well as the rise of alternative food movements. All of this matters because, as the author suggests, it’s during infancy that American palates become acclimated to tastes and textures, including those of highly processed, minimally nutritious, and calorie-dense industrial food products.

Book The Nutrition Class Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Nutrition Class Classic Reprint written by Charles Hendee Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nutrition Class The physical examination and the routine tests are made and recorded. The social condition of the home is investigated and noted. The facts are gone over care fully and additional questions put to the child and parent to complete the history, at subsequent visits. The Diagnosis must be made from the completed record and the probable causes of malnutrition recorded in the summary. All this can rarely be determined at the first visit. It may take weeks or even months to find the answer to a difficult case. At the first visit, the mother should always be present, and both parent and child must be impressed with the seriousness of bad health and poor nutrition. It is fairly easy to convince a mother that it is important for the child to grow up big and strong. It may be more difficult to make the child feel the desirability of making the effort necessary to do this. Boys may be appealed to on the basis of athletics, for they all know that size and strength help in sports and games. The same arguments will reach girls to some extent, but the better looks of a plump and rosy child may well be impressed upon them also.
