Book The NP Hardness of Covering Points with Lines Paths and Tours and Their Tractability with FPT algorithms

Download or read book The NP Hardness of Covering Points with Lines Paths and Tours and Their Tractability with FPT algorithms written by Apichat Heednacram and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : Given a problem for which no polynomial-time algorithm is likely to exist, we investigate how to attack this seemingly intractable problem based on parameterized complexity theory. We study hard geometric problems, and show that they are fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) given an instance and a parameter k. This allows the problems to be solved exactly, rather than approximately, in polynomial time in the size of the input and exponential time in the parameter. Although the parameterized approach is still young, in recent years, there have been many results published concerning graph problems and databases. However, not many earlier results apply the parameterized approach in the eld of computational geometry. This thesis, therefore, focuses on geometric NP-hard problems. These problems are the Line Cover problem, the Rectilinear Line Cover problem in higher dimensions, the Rectilinear Minimum-Links Spanning Path problem in higher dimensions, the Rectilinear Hyper- plane Cover problem, the Minimum-Bends Traveling Salesman Prob- lem and the Rectilinear Minimum-Bends Traveling Salesman Prob- lem, in addition to some other variants of these problems. The Rectilinear Minimum-Links Spanning Path problem in higher dimensions and the Rectilinear Hyperplane Cover problem had been the subject of only conjectures about their intractability. Therefore, we present the NP-completeness proofs for these problems. After verifying their hardness, we use the xed-parameter approach to solve the two problems. We focus on solving the decision version of the problems, rather than solving the optimizations. However, with the Line Cover problem we demonstrate that it is not dicult to adapt algorithms for the decision version to algorithms for the optimization version. We also implement several algorithms for the Line Cover problem and conduct experimental evaluations of our algorithms with respect to previously known algorithms. For the remaining problems in the thesis, we will establish only the fundamental results. That is, we determine fixed-parameter tractability of those problems.

Book On Covering Points with Conics and Strips in the Plane

Download or read book On Covering Points with Conics and Strips in the Plane written by Praveen Tiwari and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric covering problems have always been of focus in computer scientific research. The generic geometric covering problem asks to cover a set S of n objects with another set of objects whose cardinality is minimum, in a geometric setting. Many versions of geometric cover have been studied in detail, one of which is line cover: Given a set of points in the plane, find the minimum number of lines to cover them. In Euclidean space R^m, this problem is known as Hyperplane Cover, where lines are replaced by affine hyperplanes bounded by dimension d. Line cover is NP-hard, so is its hyperplane analogue. Our thesis focuses on few extensions of hyperplane cover and line cover. One of the techniques used to study NP-hard problems is Fixed Parameter Tractability (FPT), where, in addition to input size, a parameter k is provided for input instance. We ask to solve the problem with respect to k, such that the running time is a function in both n and k, strictly polynomial in n, while the exponential component is limited to k. In this thesis, we study FPT and parameterized complexity theory, the theory of classifying hard problems involving a parameter k. We focus on two new geometric covering problems: covering a set of points in the plane with conics (conic cover) and covering a set of points with strips or fat lines of given width in the plane (fat line cover). A conic is a non-degenerate curve of degree two in the plane. A fat line is defined as a strip of finite width w. In this dissertation, we focus on the parameterized versions of these two problems, where, we are asked to cover the set of points with k conics or k fat lines. We use the existing techniques of FPT algorithms, kernelization and approximation algorithms to study these problems. We do a comprehensive study of these problems, starting with NP-hardness results to studying their parameterized hardness in terms of parameter k. We show that conic cover is fixed parameter tractable, and give an algorithm of running time O8́7 ((k/1.38)^4k), where, O8́7 implies that the running time is some polynomial in input size. Utilizing special properties of a parabola, we are able to achieve a faster algorithm and show a running time of O8́7 ((k/1.15)^3k). For fat line cover, first we establish its NP-hardness, then we explore algorithmic possibilities with respect to parameterized complexity theory. We show W [1]-hardness of fat line cover with respect to the number of fat lines, by showing a parameterized reduction from the problem of stabbing axis-parallel squares in the plane. A parameterized reduction is an algorithm which transforms an instance of one parameterized problem into an instance of another parameterized problem using a FPT-algorithm. In addition, we show that some restricted versions of fat line cover are also W [1]-hard. Further, in this thesis, we explore a restricted version of fat line cover, where the set of points are integer coordinates and allow only axis-parallel lines to cover them. We show that the problem is still NP-hard. We also show that this version is fixed parameter tractable having a kernel size of O (k^2) and give a FPT-algorithm with a running time of O8́7 (3^k). Finally, we conclude our study on this problem by giving an approximation algorithm for this version having a constant approximation ratio 2. Book Bioinspired Computation in Combinatorial Optimization

Download or read book Bioinspired Computation in Combinatorial Optimization written by Frank Neumann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioinspired computation methods such as evolutionary algorithms and ant colony optimization are being applied successfully to complex engineering problems and to problems from combinatorial optimization, and with this comes the requirement to more fully understand the computational complexity of these search heuristics. This is the first textbook covering the most important results achieved in this area. The authors study the computational complexity of bioinspired computation and show how runtime behavior can be analyzed in a rigorous way using some of the best-known combinatorial optimization problems -- minimum spanning trees, shortest paths, maximum matching, covering and scheduling problems. A feature of the book is the separate treatment of single- and multiobjective problems, the latter a domain where the development of the underlying theory seems to be lagging practical successes. This book will be very valuable for teaching courses on bioinspired computation and combinatorial optimization. Researchers will also benefit as the presentation of the theory covers the most important developments in the field over the last 10 years. Finally, with a focus on well-studied combinatorial optimization problems rather than toy problems, the book will also be very valuable for practitioners in this field.

Book The Steiner Tree Problem

Download or read book The Steiner Tree Problem written by F.K. Hwang and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-10-20 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Steiner problem asks for a shortest network which spans a given set of points. Minimum spanning networks have been well-studied when all connections are required to be between the given points. The novelty of the Steiner tree problem is that new auxiliary points can be introduced between the original points so that a spanning network of all the points will be shorter than otherwise possible. These new points are called Steiner points - locating them has proved problematic and research has diverged along many different avenues. This volume is devoted to the assimilation of the rich field of intriguing analyses and the consolidation of the fragments. A section has been given to each of the three major areas of interest which have emerged. The first concerns the Euclidean Steiner Problem, historically the original Steiner tree problem proposed by Jarník and Kössler in 1934. The second deals with the Steiner Problem in Networks, which was propounded independently by Hakimi and Levin and has enjoyed the most prolific research amongst the three areas. The Rectilinear Steiner Problem, introduced by Hanan in 1965, is discussed in the third part. Additionally, a forth section has been included, with chapters discussing areas where the body of results is still emerging. The collaboration of three authors with different styles and outlooks affords individual insights within a cohesive whole.

Book Classic graph problems made temporal a parameterized complexity analysis

Download or read book Classic graph problems made temporal a parameterized complexity analysis written by Molter, Hendrik and published by Universitätsverlag der TU Berlin. This book was released on 2020 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the parameterized computational complexity of six classic graph problems lifted to a temporal setting. More specifically, we consider problems defined on temporal graphs, that is, a graph where the edge set may change over a discrete time interval, while the vertex set remains unchanged. Temporal graphs are well-suited to model dynamic data and hence they are naturally motivated in contexts where dynamic changes or time-dependent interactions play an important role, such as, for example, communication networks, social networks, or physical proximity networks. The most important selection criteria for our problems was that they are well-motivated in the context of dynamic data analysis. Since temporal graphs are mathematically more complex than static graphs, it is maybe not surprising that all problems we consider in this thesis are NP-hard. We focus on the development of exact algorithms, where our goal is to obtain fixed-parameter tractability results, and refined computational hardness reductions that either show NP-hardness for very restricted input instances or parameterized hardness with respect to “large” parameters. In the context of temporal graphs, we mostly consider structural parameters of the underlying graph, that is, the graph obtained by ignoring all time information. However, we also consider parameters of other types, such as ones trying to measure how fast the temporal graph changes over time. In the following we briefly discuss the problem setting and the main results. Restless Temporal Paths. A path in a temporal graph has to respect causality, or time, which means that the edges used by a temporal path have to appear at non-decreasing times. We investigate temporal paths that additionally have a maximum waiting time in every vertex of the temporal graph. Our main contributions are establishing NP-hardness for the problem of finding restless temporal paths even in very restricted cases, and showing W[1]-hardness with respect to the feedback vertex number of the underlying graph. Temporal Separators. A temporal separator is a vertex set that, when removed from the temporal graph, destroys all temporal paths between two dedicated vertices. Our contribution here is twofold: Firstly, we investigate the computational complexity of finding temporal separators in temporal unit interval graphs, a generalization of unit interval graphs to the temporal setting. We show that the problem is NP-hard on temporal unit interval graphs but we identify an additional restriction which makes the problem solvable in polynomial time. We use the latter result to develop a fixed-parameter algorithm with a “distance-to-triviality” parameterization. Secondly, we show that finding temporal separators that destroy all restless temporal paths is Σ-P-2-hard. Temporal Matchings. We introduce a model for matchings in temporal graphs, where, if two vertices are matched at some point in time, then they have to “recharge” afterwards, meaning that they cannot be matched again for a certain number of time steps. In our main result we employ temporal line graphs to show that finding matchings is NP-hard even on instances where the underlying graph is a path. Temporal Coloring. We lift the classic graph coloring problem to the temporal setting. In our model, every edge has to be colored properly (that is,the endpoints are colored differently) at least once in every time interval of a certain length. We show that this problem is NP-hard in very restricted cases, even if we only have two colors. We present simple exponential-time algorithms to solve this problem. As a main contribution, we show that these algorithms presumably cannot be improved significantly. Temporal Cliques and s-Plexes. We propose a model for temporal s-plexes that is a canonical generalization of an existing model for temporal cliques. Our main contribution is a fixed-parameter algorithm that enumerates all maximal temporal s-plexes in a given temporal graph, where we use a temporal adaptation of degeneracy as a parameter. Temporal Cluster Editing. We present a model for cluster editing in temporal graphs, where we want to edit all “layers” of a temporal graph into cluster graphs that are sufficiently similar. Our main contribution is a fixed-parameter algorithm with respect to the parameter “number of edge modifications” plus the “measure of similarity” of the resulting clusterings. We further show that there is an efficient preprocessing procedure that can provably reduce the size of the input instance to be independent of the number of vertices of the original input instance.

Book Optimizing Crossings in Circular Arc Drawings and Circular Layouts

Download or read book Optimizing Crossings in Circular Arc Drawings and Circular Layouts written by Myroslav Kryven and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A graph is an abstract network that represents a set of objects, called vertices, and relations between these objects, called edges. Graphs can model various networks. For example, a social network where the vertices correspond to users of the network and the edges represent relations between the users. To better see the structure of a graph it is helpful to visualize it. A standard visualization is a node-link diagram in the Euclidean plane. In such a representation the vertices are drawn as points in the plane and edges are drawn as Jordan curves between every two vertices connected by an edge. Edge crossings decrease the readability of a drawing, therefore, Crossing Optimization is a fundamental problem in Computer Science. This book explores the research frontiers and introduces novel approaches in Crossing Optimization.

Book Rainbow Connections of Graphs

Download or read book Rainbow Connections of Graphs written by Xueliang Li and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-23 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rainbow connections are natural combinatorial measures that are used in applications to secure the transfer of classified information between agencies in communication networks. Rainbow Connections of Graphs covers this new and emerging topic in graph theory and brings together a majority of the results that deal with the concept of rainbow connections, first introduced by Chartrand et al. in 2006. The authors begin with an introduction to rainbow connectedness, rainbow coloring, and rainbow connection number. The work is organized into the following categories, computation of the exact values of the rainbow connection numbers for some special graphs, algorithms and complexity analysis, upper bounds in terms of other graph parameters, rainbow connection for dense and sparse graphs, for some graph classes and graph products, rainbow k-connectivity and k-rainbow index, and, rainbow vertex-connection number. Rainbow Connections of Graphs appeals to researchers and graduate students in the field of graph theory. Conjectures, open problems and questions are given throughout the text with the hope for motivating young graph theorists and graduate students to do further study in this subject.
