The distance, moreover, was not great, and there were no bridges to be crossed. They formed in column and began the march. The troops at that time had orders only to prevent them from meeting at the palace of the Assembly. They were permitted to form in column in the street and march away. If they had turned to the right instead of to the left they would have encountered opposition. But there were no orders covering their chosen route; they passed through a loophole in the instructions. This fact, an hour later, caused Saint-Arnaud an unseemly display of temper.
