Book The Works of Maria Edgeworth Part I Vol 8

Download or read book The Works of Maria Edgeworth Part I Vol 8 written by Marilyn Butler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 3276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how Maria Edgewoth drew on her knowledge of the life of writings of James Harrington in composing that tale. It serves to draw in a more local reference: Florence Court Demesne in County Fermanagh was built around 1750 and originally named for Florence Wrey, wife of Sir John Cole. MARIA EDGEWORTH was born in 1768. Her first novel, Castle Rackrent (1800) was also her first Irish tale. The next such tale was Ennui (1809), after which came The Absentee, which began life as an unstaged play and was then published (in prose) in Tales of Fashionable Life (1812), as were several of her other stories. They were followed in 1817 by the last of her Irish tales, Ormond. Maria Edgeworth died in 1849. Edited with an introduction and notes by Marilyn Butler.

Book The Portrait in Fiction of the Romantic Period

Download or read book The Portrait in Fiction of the Romantic Period written by Joe Bray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-26 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the premise that the portrait was undergoing a shift in both form and function during the Romantic age, Joe Bray examines how these changes are reflected in the fiction of writers such as Maria Edgeworth, Jane Austen, Sir Walter Scott, Elizabeth Hamilton and Amelia Opie. Bray considers portraiture in a broad sense as encompassing caricature and the miniature, as well as the classic portraits of Sir Joshua Reynolds and others. He argues that the portrait in fiction often functions not as a transparent index to character or as a means of producing a straightforward likeness, but rather as a cue for misreading and a sign of the slipperiness and subjectivity of interpretation. The book is concerned with more than simply the appearance of portraits in Romantic fiction, however. More broadly, The Portrait in Fiction of the Romantic Period investigates how the language of portraiture pervades the novel in this period and how the two art forms exert mutual stylistic influence on each other.

Book A Cultural History of the Irish Novel 1790 1829

Download or read book A Cultural History of the Irish Novel 1790 1829 written by Claire Connolly and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-17 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claire Connolly offers a cultural history of the Irish novel in the period between the radical decade of the 1790s and the gaining of Catholic Emancipation in 1829. These decades saw the emergence of a group of talented Irish writers who developed and advanced such innovative forms as the national tale and the historical novel: fictions that took Ireland as their topic and setting and which often imagined its history via domestic plots that addressed wider issues of dispossession and inheritance. Their openness to contemporary politics, as well as to recent historiography, antiquarian scholarship, poetry, song, plays and memoirs, produced a series of notable fictions; marked most of all by their ability to fashion from these resources a new vocabulary of cultural identity. This book extends and enriches the current understanding of Irish Romanticism, blending sympathetic textual analysis of the fiction with careful historical contextualization.

Book Maria Edgeworth and Romance

Download or read book Maria Edgeworth and Romance written by Sharon Murphy and published by Four Courts Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of Maria Edgeworth has always attracted interest, but little attention has been paid to her extraordinary recognition of the power of imagination, a force which she and her contemporaries particularly associated with the romance, rather than the realistic, mode. Drawing widely upon her lesser-known educational treatises and literature for children and adolescents as well as her more celebrated tales and novels, Sharon Murphy explores this aspect of Edgeworth's writing. The book also offers a reassessment of the literary consequences of Edgeworth's relationship with her father, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, and illustrates why her use of romance must be understood in terms of the greater familial and colonial romance that informs all of her writing.
