Book excerpt: Observational and theoretical studies of the outbursts of classical novae have provided critical insights into a broad range of astrophysical phenomena. Thermonuclear runaways (TNRs) in accreted hydrogen-rich envelopes on the white dwarf (WD) components of close binary systems constitute not only the outburst mechanism for a classical nova explosion, but also the recurrent novae and a fraction of the symbiotic novae explosions. Studies of the general characteristics of these explosions, both in our own galaxy and in neighboring galaxies of varying metallicity, can teach us about binary stellar evolution, while studies of the evolution of nova binary systems can constrain models for the (as yet unidentified) progenitors of Type Ia supernovae. Further, the empirical relation between the peak luminosity of a nova and the rate of decline, which presents a challenge to theoretical models, allows novae to be utilized as standard candles for distance determinations out to the Virgo Cluster. E xtensive studies of novae with IUE and the resulting abundance determinations have revealed the existence of oxygen-neon white dwarfs in some systems. The high levels of enrichment of novae ejecta in elements ranging from carbon to sulfur confirm that there is significant dredge-up of matter from the core of the underlying white dwarf and enable novae to contribute to the chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium. Observations of the epoch of dust formation in the expanding shells of novae allow important constraints to be placed on the dust formation process and confirm that graphite, SiC, and SiO2 grains are formed by the outburst. It is possible that grains from novae were injected into the pre-solar nebula and can be identified with some of the pre-solar grains or ''stardust'' found in meteorites. Finally, g-ray observations during the first several years of their outburst, using the next generation of satellite observatories, could confirm the presence of decays from 7Be and 22Na.

Book Observational and Theoretical Studies of the Nova Outburst

Download or read book Observational and Theoretical Studies of the Nova Outburst written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nova outburst is one consequence of the accretion of hydrogen rich material onto a white dwarf in a close binary system. The strong electron degeneracy of a massive white dwarf drives the temperatures in the nuclear burning region to values exceeding 108K under all circumstances. As a result, a major fraction of the CNO nuclei in the envelope are transformed into e-decay nuclei, which constrains the nuclear energy generation and yields non-solar CNO isotopic abundance ratios. In addition, the observations demonstrate that white dwarf core material is dredged up into the accreted layers and these nuclei are the catalysts for producing peak rates of energy generation that can exceed 1016 erg gm−1s−1. Observations show that there are two compositional classes of novae, one that occurs on a carbon-oxygen white dwarf and the other that occurs on an oxygen-neon-magnesium white dwarf.

Book Recent Advances in the Studies of the Nova Outburst

Book excerpt: This conference marks 13 years since the first North American Cataclysmic Variable workshop (NACVW) was held in 1976 at the University of Illinois. It, therefore, seems appropriate to briefly review the progress that we have made in understanding the nova outburst. Recent detailed reviews of both the nova binary systems and their outbursts can be found in the proceedings of the Madrid IAU Symposium No. 122 on the Physics of Classical Novae'' (Cassatella and Viotti 1990), Gehrz (1988), Shara (1989), Starrfield (1988, 1989), and Bode and Evans (1989). Because of the existence of these reviews, I will describe only a few of the developments that have had a major impact on studies of the outburst. 19 refs.

Book Review of the Classical Nova Outburst

Download or read book Review of the Classical Nova Outburst written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observational studies have not only identified a new class of novae but theoretical simulations of this class have been found to be in excellent agreement with the observations. This new class consists of outbursts occurring on ONeMg white dwarfs in close binar systems in contrast to the other outbursts which are occurring on CO white dwarfs. We also review the effects of the .beta.-unstable nuclei and show how their presence has a major effect on the evolution. 77 refs.

Book The Classical Nova Outburst None

Download or read book The Classical Nova Outburst None written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classical nova outburst occurs on the white dwarf component in a close binary system. Nova systems are members of the general class of cataclysmic variables and other members of the class are the Dwarf Novae, AM Her variables, Intermediate Polars, Recurrent Novae, and some of the Symbiotic variables. Although multiwavelength observations have already provided important information about all of these systems, in this review I will concentrate on the outbursts of the classical and recurrent novae and refer to other members of the class only when necessary. 140 refs., 1 tab.

Book Hydrodynamic Studies of the Nova Outburst

Book excerpt: Hydrostatic studies have shown that a thermonuclear runaway will occur in the hydrogen-rich material accumulated on the surface of a degenerate star. Results of earlier studies are used to obtain models for calculations which show that the resulting thermonuclear runaway produces a nova outburst; the characteristics of this outburst depending on the carbon-oxygen abundance in the envelope. Book Nuclear Reaction Rates and the Nova Outburst

Download or read book Nuclear Reaction Rates and the Nova Outburst written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we examined the consequences of improving the nuclear reaction library on our simulations of TNRs on 1.25M, WD and 1.35M, WDS. We have found that the changes in the rates have affected the nucleosynthesis predictions of our calculations but not, to any great extent, the gross features. In addition, we have used a lower mass accretion rate than in our previous studies in order to accrete (and eject) more material. This has, as expected, caused the peak values of some important parameters to increase over our previous studies at the same WD mass. However, because some important reaction rates have declined in the new compilation this has not increased the abundances for nuclei above aluminum and, in fact, they have declined while the abundances of both 26Al and 27Al have increased at both WD masses. In contrast, the abundance of 22Na has declined at both WD masses over the values predicted in our earlier work. This has important implications with respect to predictions of the observability of novae with INTEGRAL.
