Book excerpt: Narrative of the first expedition to navigate the Northwest Passage in a single vessel, the expedition that brought Amundsen to prominence as a polar explorer. In 1901 he gave up the idea of medicine and decided to become an explorer. After several months in Hamburg studying the science of terrestrial magnetism, he purchased an old ship, the Gjoa, 70ft long and thirty years old. He put in a 14 hp engine; then, with six dogs and enough provisions on board, he got under way with a crew of six on 17 June, 1903. His aim was to find the North-West Passage which had been sought in vain since the time of John Cabot. In September, he crossed Peel Sound and anchored in a sheltered bay on King William Island. Eskimos came up to him who knew of the existence of white men by oral tradition only. Seventy-two years earlier, James Ross, had sailed in these regions with Parry. Amundsen bought tooth and bone necklaces and clothes which later enriched the Oslo museum. He also spent two winters learning about the Eskimo way of life. In October, 1905, he set out again for the North-West Passage. On August 30th the Gjoa entered the Nome roadstead. For the first time in world history a ship sailing north of America had found a way from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

W1th the departure from Beechey, a new chapter opened in our expedition. We now knew the course we were to take; the die was cast, and we only had to push on and make headway. Our voyage now assumed a new character. Hitherto we had been sailing in safe and known waters, where many others had preceeded us. Now we were making our way through waters never sailed in, save, possibly, by a couple of vessels, and were hoping to reach still farther where no keel had ever ploughed. We were very sanguine. In fact, I may almost say we felt certain that we should make our way through, having been fortunate enough to get thus far already. The ice conditions had been unusually favourable. We had made headway with ease, and almost without hindrance, where our predecessors had had to endure the most terrible struggles against ice and storms. As far as we could judge, the year 1903 must have been a very favourable one as regards ice. We set out from Beechey Island at 1 P.m. on August 24th, heading for Limestone Island at the entrance to Peel Sound. The compass--a floating compass by E. S. Ritchie, of Boston--proved most excellent. Owing to the nearness of the Magnetic Pole, it commenced, of course, to be somewhat slow in turning, but our further progress proved that it was quite serviceable; for as soon as we got into Barrow Strait we were caught in a fog which hung heavy and dense till the 26th, and when it cleared we sighted the land around Peel Sound. We encountered no ice with the exception of a few narrow strips of old sound ice, carried by the wash. Of large Polar ice we saw absolutely nothing. Between Sherard Head, on Prince of Wales's Land, and Cape Court, on North Somerset, we encountered the first large...

Excerpt: ...dogs, and I, one over the other, till we stopped at the bottom of the valley. For the most of the way I had had the dogs and the toboggan on top of me, and was mad at the stupid creatures for having spoilt my slide. I got up and brushed off the snow from myself and saw Mogg, who had found his own way down, standing a little distance off, splitting his sides with laughter. On the summit of the hill, Kappa and Jimmy were screaming with delight. I thought of venting my wrath on the dogs and giving them a good thrashing, but eventually decided to join in the general laughter. The Eskimo, with their heavy toboggan, were wiser than I. They took hold of it on each side and let it down quietly. The little valley led first towards the south-east, then due south, and eventually it led again into the mountains; so it did not extend very far. The sun shone brightly in the mid-day sky right in front of us, showing us the way. By going straight towards it we should pass over the mountains to Porcupine River. In cases of this kind, the Eskimo are invaluable; they at once see, from the general lie of the land in which direction progress will be easiest. This time, however, there was a difference of opinion between Jimmy and Kappa, but Kappa's arguments seemed to be the most convincing and Jimmy at last yielded to them. Later, however, we found that Jimmy was right, though Kappa, of course, would not admit it. It began to be very cold up here in the mountains. We had no thermometer with us, but judging from the drift snow I calculated the temperature to be considerably below--2 2 Fahr. We now started in the early morning when it was dark, the Aurora Borealis every now and then lighting us on our way. I often regretted now that I had not brought my snow...
