Book The North American Review Vol 75 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The North American Review Vol 75 Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 75 A Progress of the Intellect in matters of religion is certainly possible; for the fact that there has been such a progress rests on the basis of historical evidence. But there cannot be progress to such an extent as to annihilate all positive fact and absolute truth, and render religion a purely subjective affair, or a mere process of unsubstantial and unsupported mental phenomena. Such a progress, having neither starting-point nor goal, would annul itself. Whatever doctrine may be maintained on the subject of the genealogical unity of mankind, and whatever views may be adopted in regard to the existence and propagation of primeval traditions of an original divine revelation, certain it is, that facts of this kind lie in the unexplored recesses of an ante-historical period, and that the various historical nations have exhibited, from age to age, a progress of the intellect in their religious development, running parallel with their progress in other departments, and thus keeping pace with the advancing stages of general civilization. Download or read book The North American Review Vol 26 Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 26 Twenty-Three years have elapsed, since the work standing at the head of this article was given to the public by its distinguished author. It was originally prefixed to his Life of General Washington, as an Introduction necessary to the full understanding of the events of the revolution. It is now detached from that highly valuable work, the merits of which we hope, at some future period, to bring in an ample manner before our readers, if indeed there be any to whom they are unknown, and it is again presented to the public in the form of a distinct history of the colonies, adapted for an independent circulation. We entirely approve of the plan of originally annexing it to the Life of Washington; and we equally approve of its present separation in the manner adopted by the author, and for the reasons which he assigns. A general knowledge of the antecedent history of the colonies is indispensable, for a correct understanding of the history of the revolution, whether it be read for edification, or for the mere amusement of idle hours. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 73 Southey's life is a good picture of the character and fortunes of the man of letters in our own age. He was the best representative of the class; he typified both the strength and the weakness, the pleasures and the pains, the tastes and the powers, of a man exclusively devoted to literary pursuits. He began to publish before he came of age, and he died almost with the pen still grasped in the fingers which had wielded it for half a century. He lived by his publications, which, though they gained him an honorable name, and have secured for him a permanent place in the history of English literature, afforded him a meagre and uncertain livelihood. He was rich in nothing but books, of which he had accumulated a larger store probably than any man in Great Britain not favored by hereditary wealth. The booksellers made him their dependant, but could not render him their slave; he was obliged to write for his bread, but he had not the spirit, or the want of spirit, of a Grub-street hack, ready to engage in any task that opened a chance of profit. Could he have stooped to this humiliation, he might, with his versatility of power and vast range of acquisition, speedily have become rich. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 47 From what we have said, it must be evident, that, al though the completion of the first half-century, since the settlement of Ohio, makes a notice of its progress natural and proper at this time, any thing like a complete View of that progress must be out of the question. Had we the materials, they could not properly be presented in a general sketch; and a critical examination could embrace, at any one time, in a work of this kind, but a small portion of the century and a half, elapsed since the first Europeans visited the Ohio valley. We Shall, therefore, speak principally of the results, giving such details only as are least accessi ble and most interesting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 241: Founded 1815 As a matter of fact, the handout system of government never confers lasting power and glory upon its authors because the opposition can always make more grandiose promises the history of Rome during the panem et circenses period was a succession of falling heads. No sooner had an emperor distributed largess to the ih satiable populace than an aspirant (why anyone wanted the job even Gibbon fails to explain) out-promised him and the emperor's head adorned a pole. In contrast, Cromwell, Napoleon, Washington, Lenin, Hitler and Mussolini gave their people meatless weeks and breadless Sundays: it must be that the people do not really want to live by bread alone, nor even by bread and circuses. Download or read book The North American Review Vol 31 Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 31 Mr. Jefferson, in his letter on the kings of Europe, charges Joseph II. of Austria with insanity. It may be worth the while to give a little time to the consideration of the character of a ruler, about whom opinions have been so much divided. The materials are abundant, and now that the age of revolutions is past, history may be just to the imperial reformer. The prince, for whom Mozart composed music, Kaunitz negotiated, and Laudon won victories, occupies a prominent station among the sovereigns of Austria. The contrast between monarchies and democratic states is in nothing more striking, than in the degrees and amount of political abilities, which they respectively call into action. Men may dispute, if they will, whether liberty be the fostering parent of the arts, and may continue to raise questions respecting the influence of forms of government on letters; but the turbulent contests, the unsparing and unqualified competition, allowed in popular states, quicken natural talents and furnish every facility and every inducement for their display. At courts the race is not necessarily to the swift; and men are naturally turned aside from the career of the public service, when no scope is furnished them for the full exercise of natural powers and the manly struggle for honors.
