A monarchical government, which has extended its dominions by conquest, and holds the greater portion of them merely by the sword, causes only this imperfect and unnatural union among the several classes of its subjects; - the mortar which binds them may be more or less indurated, according to its degree of native strength, or to the lapse of time during which it has been exposed to the action of elemental forces; but the pebbles imbedded in it continue unchanged; their form remains as it was determined by mutual attrition, when they were free to roll over each other under the impulse of the waves and the resistance of the beach. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 122: January, 1876 The Revolution which a century ago severed the connection between Great Britain and her colonies issued so directly from political disputes that its religious aspects have been obscured; yet no fact lies plainer on the page of colonial history than the intimate alliance of religious and political ideas, - a fact which the elder Adams emphasized when he cautioned the Abbe Mably not to undertake the War of Inde pendenee without first mastering the church system of New England. And it would form a singular exception to the ordi nary laws of historical development, if that which is so evident in the causes of the Revolution could not be traced in its results. Those results supplied new ecclesiastical as well as new politi cal conditions, and flowered, at the same time, in the novel experiments of a self-governed state and of a self-directing and self-supporting church. Nor should the formal separa tion of these two experiments betray us into the error of sup posing that they are essentially distinct. They have been carried on together, by the same people, and during the same period, and throughout all this period have had a connection more close and real than will be conceded by such as are ao customed to look only at the superficial causes of political and social progress. There can be no doubt that whatever circum stances tend to affect the one must ultimately afiect the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 149 While, then, it should be distinctly understood as not open to debate that the faculty must govern the college, and must absolute ly decide in any issue between them and the students, still the con stant aim and unceasing study should be to make it unnecessary for them to use their authority by cultivating in all ways among the students the manly and earnest spirit which makes the resort to authority unnecessary, and especially by leading the students to feel that their teachers are not spies and antagonists, but their true friends, eager to assist them in every way. A great improve ment has taken place in this generation in the relations of college officers and students, and in the general demeanor of students. That improvement has been largely due to the adoption to a greater or less extent of the principles advocated in this paper. In most colleges the petty and detailed supervision of the student's daily and hourly life has been relaxed or abandoned. Less reliance for insuring good conduct is now placed on manifold restraints than on the appeal to a manly spirit in the student. I am of the opinion that the introduction of the elective system in the latter part of the college course has also been most beneficial from a moral, as well as from an intel lectual, point of view. The compulsory pursuit of unwelcome studies in the junior and senior years used to cause much friction and discontent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North American Review, Vol. 144 The next generation will find it hard to believe that of the four men living at the outbreak of the war who had occupied the presidential chair not one tendered his support to the National cause, or offered sympathy or patriotic counsel to his overburdened successor at the head of the Government. It will be deemed almost incredible that during the whole four years of that terrible struggle not one of these men, all of whom were citizens of Northern States, made any public utterance intended to strengthen the Union cause or indeed any utterance at all upon the subject, except in one case, when compelled by public clamor to make a lame excuse for his own apathy. Already it is hard to realize that when the conflict drew to its close one of these men refused to decorate his house in honor of our final tri-victory, or display the emblems of mourning on the death of the great leader whose marvelous tact and unfailing steadfastness had brought us through those years of unmatched peril. Still more difficult will it be for posterity to understand that our ex-Presidents were simply types of a very large element of our people. These very naturally desired the war, its causes and overshadowing glories to be forgotten just as soon as possible. They made haste, therefore, to turn the public attention into other channels and to clamor for oblivion in regard to the past. There was another and most peculiar influence tending in this direction. The political organization then having control of the country had in it two elements which looked with especial disfavor on the ascendency within itself of those whose fame rested on military renown. One of these was what was known as the "Abolition Element." These men regarded themselves as, in a sense, the possessors of an exclusive proprietary interest in the Republican party of that day, and thought that the laurels of its first administration, both civic and military, ought to relate back to them as the ultimate cause, rather than rest upon the heads of the immediate agents. Such men as Chase, Sumner, Seward, Greeley, and a host of lesser lights, felt deeply aggrieved at being overshadowed by men like Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, and Stanton, and other military leaders whom they regarded, if not us trespassers on their demesne, at least as men who had merely adopted their ideas and reaped advantage from their labors.
