This book was released on 2022-10-03 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global threats to climate, biodiversity and a healthy environment are mainly caused by the excessive use of non-renewable materials. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and Unique Consultancy, elaborated a Global Forest Sector Outlook 2050 to assess the capacity of wood supply to support a sustainable bioeconomy. The report presents a business-as-usual scenario, based on the Global Forest Products Model (GFPM), and a bioeconomy scenario based on the impact of increased consumption of two wood products consolidated in the market: mass timber and manmade cellulose fiber. The publication assesses the market outlook for demand for primary processed wood products, demand and supply of industrial roundwood, wood energy, and forest employment and investments. From a deman-driven perspective, it discusses the actual forest resource base and production needs to supply future demand by factoring in the use of wood residues and enhanced productivity in the forest sector, as well as the influence of megatrends and policy objectives.

Download or read book The North American Forest Sector Outlook Study written by and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2012 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Projections for the United States and Canada to 2030 have been made with a global model to account for concurrent changes in other countries. Three future scenarios were investigated: two IPCC-based scenarios assuming the rapid growth of wood-based energy, and one IPCC-based scenario without this assumption. The model, under the IPCC scenarios, accounted for trends in population, income and land use along with emerging technology and predicted changes to consumption patterns for wood products and bioenergy. Markets for wood products, which mainly are destined for the construction sector in North America, are projected to recover by 2015 under all three scenarios examined. Projections suggest that, in spite of declining use of paper for media, other paper and paperboard for packaging and miscellaneous uses will continue to enjoy strong global demand."--Provided by publisher.
Download or read book The European Forest Sector Outlook Study II 2010 2030 written by United Nations and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Forest Sector Outlook Study II (EFSOS II) is the latest in a series of studies, which started in 1952, to provide a regular outlook report for the European forest sector. All these studies have aimed to map out possible or likely future developments, on the basis of past trends, as a contribution to evidence-based policy formulation and decision making. A reference scenario and four policy scenarios have been prepared for the European forest sector bewteen 2010 and 2030, covering the forest resource and forest products. The scenarios are based on the results of several different modelling approaches, and in particular of econometric projections of production and consumption of forest products, the Wood Resource Balance, the European Forest Information Scenario model (EFISCEN), the European forest Institute-Global Forest Sector Model (EFI-GTM), and competitiveness analysis.

Download or read book State of the World s Forests 2007 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 7th edition of the FAO's biennial report on the state of global forest resources, recent developments and emerging issues in the forest sector. This edition focuses on progress towards sustainable forest management at the regional and global levels, with each regional report structured according to seven thematic elements: the extent of forest resources; biological diversity; forest health and vitality; productive functions of forest resources; protective functions of forest resources; socio-economic functions; and legal, policy and institutional frameworks. These summaries are based on the most current information available, including new data from the Global Forest Resources Assessment 2005 (FRA 2005). The report goes on to consider 18 key issues in the forest sector, including: climate change, forest landscape restoration, forest tenure, invasive species, wildlife management and wood energy. The overall conclusion is that whilst progress is being made, it is very uneven with those regions with developing economies and tropical ecosystems continuing to lose forest area whilst lacking adequate institutions to reverse this trend. The biggest limitation for evaluating progress is weak data, with many countries lacking the financial resources to undertake national forest assessments.

Download or read book Forests For Sustainability written by Dr. D.N. Tewari and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests are receiving unprecedented world-wide attention for their crucial role in the mitigation of climate change; conservation of biodiversity; regulation of water cycle and maintenance of livelihoods. That includes the social and economic benefits from timber; fuelwood; non-wood forest products and wildlife; among other items. Apart from gainful employment and income generation potential for rural communities and self-reliant subsistence of forest dwellers; forests provide a range of environmental services fundamental for human wellbeing; they help protect land and water resources; conserve and improve soils; store carbon and provide significant intrinsic and aesthetic values for people. Yet the continuing deforestation and forest degradation; especially in the poverty afflicted developing countries; threaten the very future of their civilization; while escalating the food insecurity and vulnerability of world’s forest-dependent poorest people. Given the global prospects and problems of the planet’s welfare associated with forests; an effective international response is warranted without further procrastination to ensure sustainable management and conservation of the earth’s forest resource assets. In this context; awareness-raising by launching the International year of Forests 2011 (IYF) is timely. This book on ‘Forests for Sustainability’ is dedicated to the mission of the IYF and the Indian Forest Congress. It is oriented to highlighting the opportunities and challenges for enhancing forestry related livelihoods & sustainability. The book conveys key messages of coordinated effort needed worldwide to use the right mix of regulatory; market based and informational instruments for promoting the improvement of state of forests and related dimensions of the environment and livelihoods.
Download or read book Wood Energy in Developed Economies written by Francisco X. Aguilar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a recent resurgence of interest in wood energy as part of a sustainable range of renewable energy options. This book addresses the current gap in the energy and public policy literature for a reference book that compiles the most-recent wood energy assessments, and evaluates current and potential future wood energy uses and the role for public policy to foster efficient use of the most-widely consumed renewable energy in the world. It brings together a group of expert authors covering topics from forest management, operations and engineering, to socio-economics and energy policy perspectives. It thus covers practical issues such as silviculture, harvesting, processing, comparative cost estimates, public policy tools and market effects. As such the book provides a comprehensive review of the complex dimensions of wood energy as well as practical guidance for professionals, researchers and advanced students. It will also provide invaluable guidance for economic development agencies, practitioners and policy-makers, when evaluating the impacts of wider wood energy adoption as part of a strategy for sustainable energy generation. The main focus is on industrialised production and developed economies, particularly the USA and Europe.
