Book The Wineland Sagas Book One The Saga of Leif the Lucky

Download or read book The Wineland Sagas Book One The Saga of Leif the Lucky written by Milton Norman Franson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-01-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Were there Vikings in North America 1,000 years ago? Yes! According to this novel there were, and they had quite an adventure. In the year 1003, a Viking named Leif Eiriksson sails into the setting sun to explore a new land rumored to lie a few day's voyage beyond his southern Greenland home. In "The Wineland Sagas" trilogy, Leif discovers and explores a beautiful but dangerous new land. He names it "Wineland the Good" after finding wild grapes unexpectedly growing there. He also discovers the densely forested land hides many native tribes; stone-age people who are suspicious of these fearsome strangers with their steel weapons and huge seagoing "canoes." The bearded intruders bring desirable trade goods, but they come with an aggressive Viking attitude. Too soon, the friendly contacts turn into misunderstanding and conflict. The Norsemen are few, the natives many. To survive in this hostile new land, Leif and his followers must cast off their "Viking Raider" nature and become peaceful "Viking Traders." The ultimate success of the new colony hinges on many twists and turns, some predictable, some unexpected. In "The Saga of Leif the Lucky" (the first book of the Wineland trilogy) Leif and his followers struggle heroically to overcome the obstacles thrown in their path. Leif will need all the skill and good fortune he can muster to keep a foothold in the new land. But then, there must be a reason later sagas call him Leif "the Lucky." In this fictional retelling of the saga of Leif Eiriksson, the author goes beyond the familiar story of the initial discovery and exploration at the beginning of the millennium. The reader is led into a complex and intriguing tale that envisions how an early Norse colonial effort somewhere in the New England area might have played out. Leif's saga is historical fiction spiced with drama, adventure and mystery. It's a tale of a "lost Viking colony" that flourished for hundreds of years before the Pilgrims landed at Cape Cod. The unexpected ending is not what history books have led us to believe.

Book excerpt: One of the most arresting stories in the history of exploration, these two Icelandic sagas tell of the discovery of America by Norsemen five centuries before Christopher Columbus. Together, the direct, forceful twelfth-century Graenlendinga Saga and the more polished and scholarly Eirik's Saga, written some hundred years later, recount how Eirik the Red founded an Icelandic colony in Greenland and how his son, Leif the Lucky, later sailed south to explore - and if possible exploit - the chance discovery by Bjarni Herjolfsson of an unknown land. In spare and vigorous prose they record Europe's first surprise glimpse of the eastern shores of the North American continent and the natives who inhabited them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Norse Visits to North America: With Ten Plates In the rather long continued labor of preparing this monograph, the author has had occasion to recognize gratefully the kindly willingness of scientific men and of scholars generally to extend a helping hand. He would especially mention the philological assistance of Mr. Juul Dieserud and his patient oral translation of the writings of Dr. Nansen and others before their appearance in English; the helpful criticism of my manuscript by Prof. Julius E. Olson; the explanation by the late Dr. W J McGee of the observed progressive changes of level along our seaboard by glacial recession and resultant continuing crustal wave action - a theory since corroborated by other authorities - which affords a reasonably trustworthy conception of the American Atlantic coast line and its conditions about the year 1000 A. D., and thus throws new light on the regions and special places intended by the names in the saga; the efficient aid of Mr. James Mooney in Gaelic and Indian problems; and the sympathetic interest of Mr. David Hutcheson who has furnished a copious supply of data on the subject supplemented by some personal field-work near one possible Hop of the Norsemen. I. - The New World Prelude Concerning the discovery of America before Columbus, there are many theories, fancies, and claims; but only two visits can be considered historic, namely, those of Leif Ericsson and Thorfinn Karlsefni. The Wineland or Vinland of these explorers has been so greatly misunderstood and has been made the basis of so much elaborate and contradictory explanation during the past three centuries that only the hope of clearing matters a little by patient research would perhaps justify one in adding to its volume. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, and the Origin of the North American Indians The Norwegians claim their share of the glory, on grounds rather better than the Welsh. By their settlements in Iceland and Greenland, they had arrived within so small a distance of the new world, that there is at least a possibility of its having been touched at by a people so versed in maritine affairs, and so adventurous, as the ancient Normans were. The proofs are much more numerous than those produced by British historians, for the discovery is mentioned in several Islandic manuscripts. Book excerpt: The Saga of the Greenlanders and Eirik the Red’s Saga contain the first ever descriptions of North America, a bountiful land of grapes and vines, discovered by Vikings five centuries before Christopher Columbus. Written down in the early thirteenth century, they recount the Icelandic settlement of Greenland by Eirik the Red, the chance discovery by seafaring adventurers of a mysterious new land, and Eirik’s son Leif the Lucky’s perilous voyages to explore it. Wrecked by storms, stricken by disease and plagued by navigational mishaps, some survived the North Atlantic to pass down this compelling tale of the first Europeans to talk with, trade with, and war with the Native Americans.
