Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Normal Course in Reading: Fourth Reader; The Wonderful Things Around Us One afternoon when the school duties Of the day were done, a bright, thoughtful boy sat at his window. He saw the river that swept past the garden wall. On the other side Of the river lay a beautiful val ley, and beyond this, long lines Of hills. Among these hills were small valleys leading into the one through which the river wound its way. The boy beheld this delightful scene with a look Of inquiry on his face. What could he be thinking about? What did he wish to inquire about? Was it the curious curves of the hills, giving such grace to the land scape, that pleased him? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Normal Course in Reading: First Reader, Word Pictures and Language Lessons Probably no books in our schools represent, on the whole, more effort and enterprise on the part of publisher and author alike, than the school reading books. They have constantly received contributions from our ablest and most thoughtful educators, and to their publication have been given the best endeavors of our most successful schoolbook makers facts which abundantly attest the importance of the subject and the interest taken in it by the educational public. That there have yet remained possibilities for improvement in this department of school work cannot be doubted by any who have followed the discussions of the subject among educators and in the press. Our best teachers have not been satisfied with the readers of stereotyped pattern, and have over and again ex pressed a desire for something different and better. All this has revealed and emphasized the necessity for improvement, not alone in the manner of. Presentation, but also in the subject-matter presented. Information, Literature, Oral Expression IN the preparation of The Progressive Course in Readin g, the compilers have kept steadily in view certain results which, in their judgment, should be aimed at by every teacher of reading, viz.: com mand of the art of reading, both silent and oral, a love for the best reading material, and the establishment of the reading habit. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Reading for Common Schools and the Lower Classes of Academies: On the Plan of the of the Author's "Elements of Reading and Oratory" It will be seen, on examination, that the leading idea of Mr. Walker, is mine; namely, that the law of delivery must be derived from the structure of the sen tence. Mr. Walker, however, either because that idea was not a very clear one, or because he wanted leisure or patience for a wide, comprehensive and exact induction, satisfied himself, as I have already observed, with an extremely imperfect development of it. What he left undone, I have attempted to do to give a complete enumeration of the different sentences in the English language, and a description of their distinctive peculiarities of structure. This part of my work, which forms its base, is comprised in chapter fourth. Chapter second, on Punctuation, chapter third on Modulation, and chapter sixth, containing the laws of delivery, with a long train of examples under each for exercise, are merely derivations from chapter fourth. Download or read book Courses of Reading and Study in the New International Encyclopaedia Classic Reprint written by Daniel Coit Gilman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Courses of Reading and Study in the New International Encyclopaedia It is in its orderly marshalling of the material contained in the Encyclopaedia that we believe the value of this book consists. It is quite unlikely that the average reader, left to his own guidance, Will plan his course in such a manner as to produce the fullest results with the least waste of time. Where the subject is unfamiliar, he is as apt at the start to hit upon the middle of it as upon the beginning, and, in passing from article to article, there is always the danger of his missing the logical sequence of topics. A mere index would here be useless. What is necessary is a carefully planned outline that shall lead the reader, step by step, from elementary principles to the most specialized treatment. Such a guide this Outline aims to be. The preparation of this volume, carried on under the supervision of the Editors, has been in the direct charge of Mr. Simeon strunsky, of the staff of the New International Encyclopedia. Book Five Short Courses of Reading in English Literature

Download or read book Five Short Courses of Reading in English Literature written by Caleb Thomas Winchester and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Short Courses of Reading in English Literature: With Biographical and Critical References These courses of reading were prepared originally for college students, and were used for several years by classes under my instruction. It is thought that, as now printed, they may be of service not only to other teachers but to reading clubs, and to any readers who are beginning a systematic study of our literature. It is evident that this little manual is intended as a guide to the general reader or the beginner, and not for the advanced student of literature. The courses are, as they are named, short. Only so much reading has been assigned to each one as it has been found practica ble for a college student to do thoroughly in connection with an elementary study of literary history extending through one year. Each course is, however, followed by a list of Additional Reading for readers who have time and inclination to make a somewhat more thorough study of the period it covers; and it is believed that the five courses, taken together with the supplementary lists, will represent not very inadequately the nature and progress of English literature from the beginning of the Eliza bethan period to the present day.
