Book The Seduction of the Nigerian Church

Download or read book The Seduction of the Nigerian Church written by Gary S Maxey and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-28 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a daring and no-holds-barred description of the false teachings and dangerous trends that have sent much of the Nigerian Church off course over the past four decades. Gary Maxey is joined by Peter Ozodo in describing four major threats to Christian orthodoxy that are threatening the orthodoxy of Nigerian Christianity. The first is the unbalanced Prosperity Gospel that is shown to be an import from the scripturally unbalanced American Word of Faith movement. The second is the revival of African Traditional Religion within the Church. The third threat is a subtle redefining of Christian spirituality, moving away from sound foundations in biblical morality. The fourth threat is the contemporary Hyper Grace movement, found in the teachings of Singapore's Joseph Prince and a host of American imitators. All four of these threats have become deeply entrenched in various sectors of the Nigerian Church. With a powerful Introduction by Gbile Akanni, this book is a must-read by every Nigerian pastor, as well as discerning lay people. Maxey and Ozodo not only point out the problems but they point to clear solutions. Their conviction is that before we can expect a national spiritual revival in Nigeria we must first see a clear reformation in which these and other errors are clearly dealt with.

Book Religion and the Making of Nigeria

Download or read book Religion and the Making of Nigeria written by Olufemi Vaughan and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Religion and the Making of Nigeria, Olufemi Vaughan examines how Christian, Muslim, and indigenous religious structures have provided the essential social and ideological frameworks for the construction of contemporary Nigeria. Using a wealth of archival sources and extensive Africanist scholarship, Vaughan traces Nigeria’s social, religious, and political history from the early nineteenth century to the present. During the nineteenth century, the historic Sokoto Jihad in today’s northern Nigeria and the Christian missionary movement in what is now southwestern Nigeria provided the frameworks for ethno-religious divisions in colonial society. Following Nigeria’s independence from Britain in 1960, Christian-Muslim tensions became manifest in regional and religious conflicts over the expansion of sharia, in fierce competition among political elites for state power, and in the rise of Boko Haram. These tensions are not simply conflicts over religious beliefs, ethnicity, and regionalism; they represent structural imbalances founded on the religious divisions forged under colonial rule.

Book 20 Pentecostal Pioneers in Nigeria

Download or read book 20 Pentecostal Pioneers in Nigeria written by Israel O. Olofinjana and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-02-04 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever so often a book comes along that I feel should have been written years ago, and this book is one of them. As a Christian who found faith in Nigeria in the 80s, I was intrigued by stories about 'God Generals", those men and women that led 20th century revivals across the world (most of them in the West). Now I have in my hands, a book that shares some of the stories of some of my fellow countrymen who shaped the faith landscape in Nigeria. I am really impressed with the diversity of the leaders identified and the depth of the research undertaken. This book, in my view, should be a must read for anyone interested in origins of Pentecostalism in Nigeria. Keno Ogbo, Co-editor, The Black Church in the 21st Century "The Lord joined us to the ministry of Benson Idahosa for 20 years and we saw firsthand the reality and power of the gospel in Africa that has touched the world. The Lord's sovereign work in the continent is going to impact the globe for generations to come. Thank God for the African church of Jesus Christ. Millions of strong and faithful believers are coming forth at this critical time as God builds His church." Dr Kent & Ruth Hodge, President of Christian Faith Institute, Jos, Nigeria. Christianity has been recognised to be a growing religion in Sub Sahara Africa. The expression of Christianity that is expanding in Africa is Pentecostalism. One reason for this growth is the renewal factor which has engulfed the whole continent. Nigeria is one of the countries that has and is still experiencing revival that is contributing to local and global Christianity. What is the origin of Pentecostalism in Nigeria? What contributions did the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa make to the Pentecostal scene in Africa? Why is RCCG one of the fastest growing Churches in the World? This book considers the history of Pentecostalism in Nigeria by looking at the pioneering efforts of men and women who laid the foundation of the Movement.

Book Nigerian Politics and Corruption

Download or read book Nigerian Politics and Corruption written by Kyrian Chukwuemeka Echekwu and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-06-02 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corruption is alive and well in Nigeria—and it must be eliminated. Moreover, the Nigerian church can no longer watch it go unchecked. Though conscious of his limitations as a priest and theologian, the author takes an in-depth look at how corruption has taken hold of Nigeria and its people in this scholarly work. He challenges the church as a socio-moral actor and the civil authorities that govern Nigeria, arguing that the nation will collapse if corruption continues. He notes that even though the Nigerian people have lashed out against corruption, it has only gotten worse—either because morality has been relegated to the background or not enough has been done to inculcate morality into Nigeria’s politics. The author employs a holistic approach in examining issues such as: bishops and their vision of Nigeria vis-à-vis Nigerian politics; democracy and the power equation among the various arms of government; principal biases that characterize Nigerian politics; and class affiliation and its impact in Nigerian politics. Find out how corruption is ruining Nigeria, and discover how the church and government can work together to fix the problem in Nigerian Politics and Corruption.

Book excerpt: Wither The Nigerian Church?Searchlight on the Nigerian Church and Impacts on the nations of the world by Prophet Victoria AdekoyaThis is a prophetic action book on the Nigerian Church and how it impacts the nations of the world. This particular series covers the period between 1993 to end 2016, cutting across the length and breadth of Nigeria. The searchlight touches on Churchs, Politicians, Government, ethnic groups, Islam, Boko Haram ravaging the country, corruption and occult influence and control over the territory of Nigeria. It gives vivid account of the happening here in the nation of Nigeria and how it will impact events from around the world prophetically including United States of America, Great Britain, Asia and other parts of Africa as the days dawn. One of my spiritual sons made a remark the other day that highlighted the agonies in God's heart about the current climate of the Nigerian Church. He said " The world is better than the Church". He works as an administrative staff in a church and had seen the ways of the clergy in his place of work. A few days later, I was discussing about the prayer pattern of the Nigerian church with a young pastor friend of mine. I told him that God is not happy with it because it negates His desire for the body of Christ in the nation. The pastor said "Any pastor who does not lead prayers in that pattern will have very few or no members in his church".It was revealed to me on 20 of October 1994, while praying in England that God wants to use Nigeria in the nations in this End-time before Jesus comes. Prior to this, in 1993, God had led me to scatter physically a church in North-central zone of Nigeria and to tell the occultic pastor that he would lose everything he was doing and end up in hell. He later sent someone to thank me for what I did. As a follow up to the revelation I received in 1994, God led me in 2001 to go to Lokoja to pray for Nigeria at the confluence of the two rivers that traverses the country. It was while praying in room 12 at Confluence Motel Adankolo junction in Lokoja that He gave me the second name of the ministry The Jury Ministry and He told me to use it to kill and destroy what He has not allowed in the church and the nations. Jer.1:10. Between that 2001 and 2006, I have been led by God to go to various areas of the country to intercede and deliver His messages to various groups in the country to let them know their roles in God's End-time assignment and prepare themselves to go ahead to perform them.I have been led to Ogoni land-representing our resource base, Tiv land-representing militancy, Ijebu land-representing economic control and syncretism in the church and Igbo land- representing Nigerians' penchant for travelling and the worship of mammon. I have been led to write Spiritual profiles of some countries of various continents of the world. Europe, Middle East, Asia and North-America. I have also done a zone by zone Spiritual profile of Nigeria and also written some Newsletters under a general caption-'His Word for Now' in which I highlighted areas where true Christians should check their spiritual standing and their preparedness to carry the gospel to the nations starting from our environment.

Book Human Rights and the Mission of the Church in Nigeria

Download or read book Human Rights and the Mission of the Church in Nigeria written by Paul Odoeme and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2013 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human rights question constitutes a vital link to the mission of the Christian Church. The Church is thereby obliged by principles of the gospel mandate to defend, promote, and protect human rights. Using the Nigerian context as a model, this book examines how the Church exercises its mission towards salvaging the deplorable situation of human rights violations. The Church is accused of intrusive, ethnocentric, and triumphalist tendencies in some methods and structures, which constantly expose it to steady allegations of human rights violations. This scenario evokes an in-depth investigation into the matter to ascertain the extent of the Church's credibility and competence in the human rights question. Book Thomas Ekundayo Phillips

Download or read book Thomas Ekundayo Phillips written by Godwin Sadoh and published by . This book was released on 2009-01 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biography and music of Thomas King Ekundayo Phillips are synonymous with the history of Nigerian church music. His compositions chronicle the emergence of Nigerian church music from the nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. Phillips's works demonstrate the experimental stages of musical synthesis that began in the church, and in particular, elucidate the various levels of musical development and growth in Nigeria. By writing diverse musical genres, Phillips presents an array of compositional choices that are available to indigenous sacred music composers liturgical, hymnological, choral, and instrumental pieces. Ekundayo Phillips's compositions divulge the utilization of traditional source materials in contemporary compositions. In other words, Phillips's Yoruba compositions are paradigms for employing traditional creative principles embedded in the Nigerian culture, and recombining them with modern techniques to create intercultural music. Phillips understood the problem of ethnic conflict in Nigeria; therefore, in some of his songs he calls for unity, peace, love, and national cohesion. Phillips's compositions certainly fall within the category of intercultural musicology. His compositions represent the first attempts by native Nigerian composers in the experimental synthesis of diverse musical idioms in creating a truly hybrid composition. Indeed, credit is given to Phillips's pioneer research on the word-music relationship, the utilization of indigenous pitch collections, as found in the traditional music, contrapuntal devices in choral music, indigenous polyphonic techniques, and text setting; all documented in his well-written book, Yoruba Music: Fusion of Speech and Music a monumental gem and theory of Nigerian music.

Book Nigeria s Christian Revolution

Download or read book Nigeria s Christian Revolution written by Richard Burgess and published by OCMS. This book was released on 2008 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria has become the arena of one of the most remarkable religious movements of recent times, reflecting the shift in the global center of Christianity from the North to the South. This book tells the story of one sector of this movement from its root in the Nigerian civil war to the turn of the new millenium. It describes a revival that occurred among the Igbo people of Eastern Nigeria and the new Pentecostal churches it generated and documents the changes that have occurred as the movement has responded to global flows and local demands. As such, it explores the nature of revivalist and Pentecostal experience but does so against the backdrop of local socio-political and economic developments, such as decolonization and civil war, as well broader processes, such as modernization and globalization.

Book Pathfinders for Christianity in Northern Nigeria 1862 1940

Download or read book Pathfinders for Christianity in Northern Nigeria 1862 1940 written by Emmanuel A. S. Egbunu and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-01-14 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rivers Niger and Benue come together at the heart of Nigeria on a map. Besides being a confluence of two great rivers, it also became the location of landmarks in Nigeria’s history, notably the amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates. As it was also a confluence of various cultural clusters, the Niger-Benue confluence communities went through three phases of Western encounters: commercial, missionary, and colonial. These have combined to shape the sociopolitical profile of northern Nigeria in various ways. In particular, it is the cradle of Christianity in northern Nigeria. Yet social historians have often assessed all three foreign influences indiscriminately and overlooked the unique and fundamental impact of the missionary encounter in providing the treasured values that midwifed social stability in such a pluralistic and sometimes volatile environment. This study undertakes a separation of the strands and sheds light on the laudable initiatives and legacies of the missionaries to ensure more clear-minded interpretations.

Book excerpt: Messenger is a study of the life, ministry, and theology of Sydney Granville Elton, a man who believed he had an apostolic message for the church in Nigeria and who stopped at nothing to deliver it. It will inspire you to find your place in prophetic destiny and fulfil it. Elton played the most significant role in shaping Pentecostalism in Nigeria during its first half-century. His impact on the movement was nothing short of revolutionary and his story is crucial to rediscovering the essence that created one of the most vibrant Pentecostal movements in the world. Messenger explores the beginnings of Pentecostalism in Nigeria, bringing alive the stories of its major characters, the passion that catapulted the outpouring into a national phenomenon, and the first major crisis that marked the turning point in its early history. Elton's pivotal role from these early days, and in virtually every significant initiative crucial to its development for fifty years is told in riveting detail. At no other time-when the foundations of Pentecostal Christianity in Nigeria are being vigorously shaken, and when both the church and the nation are in desperate need of a new breed of visionary and courageous leadership-does Elton's bold prophetic vision hold greater significance to our collective spiritual experience. Messenger will impart to you a fresh vision of God's purpose and stir you to be a part of it.
