Download or read book The Newer Spiritualism Classic Reprint written by Frank Podmore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Newer Spiritualism In this, his posthumous work, Myers does not indeed disdain whatever support may be derived from the trance utterances and the physical phenomena. But in both directions the evidence has been SO multi plied since his death that it will be necessary to devote the bulk of this book to its discussion. Myers' peculiar contribution to the subject may be considered more brie y, not, indeed, as being less important, but because the nine years which have elapsed have brought nothing to strengthen his position. Brie y, Myers essayed to lift the whole problem of man's immortality to a higher level, and propounded an argument of far wider scope, whose cogency we are hardly yet in a position accurately to estimate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritualism: A Popular History From 1847 Books about Spiritualism have been so numerous of late that the reader with little leisure probably finds it more difficult than ever to form an opinion. The only new work that can be of real use is a short and clear historical sketch of the entire movement. Those who make history, the living actors, rarely see its significance. The events of to-day take on swollen and gigantic forms, while the events of yesterday and the day before shrink into almost indistinguishable shapes on the dim horizon. It spoils one's perspective and sense of values. It obscures the real meaning of things. Life is a river rather than a procession. To understand it you must ascend the upper reaches, trace its tributaries, and glance at the hills and dales which directed the waters into the river-bed. Most useful of all would it be to rise high above the earth and survey the entire course, from the hill-sides on which the first showers fall to the point where the waters merge into the sea. Rumours Of the trance utterances of A. J. Davis and of Cahagnet's somnambules had, however, reached this country, and at least one English somnambule, Emma, the subject of Dr. Haddock, had seen visions of a future life and of spiritual things not unlike those recorded of Adele Maginot.2 Neither Haddock himself, nor Gregory, who discusses the visions and compares them with those recorded by Cahagnet,3 is prepared to accept the clairvoyant utterances as authentic revelations; but neither, on the other hand, is willing to dismiss them as unquestionably subjective. That Haddock's own mind was not made up on the subject he frankly confesses; and the mere fact that he thinks it worth while to devote several pages of his book to the account of these ecstatic visions clearly indicates that he set some value on such records. But, at any rate, if some of the English Mesmerists in the early fifties held it an Open question whether such clairvoyant utterances had any reference to objective realities, there was as yet no school or sect, as in America and Germany, to adopt without hesitation the spiritualistic interpretation of these and kindred phenomena. It was not, indeed, until 1853 that the new doctrine Obtained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse Delivered Before the Willimantic Spiritualist Society, at Willimantic, Conn., On Sunday, March 21, 1886 To the Christian investigator it comes with a peculiar claim to respect. The culture of the world is very much running to materialism - to the old Sadduceeism which said there is 'no spirit; and Spiritualism comes in to antagonize this deadliest foe to Christianity. Many is the man who has been converted to a belief in immortality by it; many a man has been brought by it within the Christian fold. Lord Brougham said: Even in the most cloudless skies of skepticism I see a rain-cloud, if it be no bigger than a man's hand. It is modern Spiritualism. Joseph Cook said, in one of his public lectures, that he was not sure but Christianity, in its struggle with prevailing unbelief, would have to appeal to it for help. Then again, the Bible is full of Spiritualism. The argument against Spiritualism is an argument against the Bible. Thus a leading scientist, in writing against Spiritualism, declares that there never has been, in all time, a manifestation that has appeared to come from the spiritual world that could not be explained upon natural princi ples. To his clear mind there was no use in denying a part unless the whole was denied. Then again, we are told in the New Testament that there will be a great spiritual outpouring and experience - in other words, great spiritual phenomena in the last days. I refer to all these considerations in support of my statement that this subject has a special claim on the Christian investigator. Download or read book The Way to Godhood written by Reuben Swinburne Clymer and published by . This book was released on 2019-04-04 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The desire for death is an unnatural desire. It causes man to become wholly negative. This negative state, like the opium-habit, leads him to think that he has no desires, when, in fact, this very delusion leads to many desires, which are, nevertheless, perversions of natural, normal desires. Living under a false belief, a false conception of life and human destiny, and viewing things in the wrong light, regarding that which is natural to man as something to be avoided, the negative, hopeless man soon comes to see the abnormal and the perverse as something desirable. And, under the pessimistic eye of a nature perverted by negative doctrines, virtue becomes a thing to be shunned, and perversity becomes desirable.""When man seeks knowledge, first of all, when he makes use of his knowledge for good, when he seeks to learn his weaknesses in order to replace them with strength, when he seeks to find the cause of his servitude in order to remove it--then will he free himself and become master instead of slave, a man instead of a weakling; and, gradually, he will become one with God rather than one with negativeness and destructiveness and perversity of nature.""He who has conserved his strength, who has not al-followed false ideas to turn his natural desires into unnatural channels, who holds to a philosophy or a religion that is strong, virile, and full of love, but, withal, full of power and a sense of right--he is the man that is well-nigh invincible. Just as it is with the individual, so is it with the nation.""A system of natural living, three-fold in its application, including mind, body, and soul, will make of man a true Man, will give him the strength and the power and the goodness that enable him to resist all undesirable forces, be what they may, which would bind him to serfdom and cause him to do what he does not want to do or which would take from him something be truly loves."--------Reuben Swinburne Clymer (November 25, 1878 - June 3, 1966) was an American occultist and modern Rosicrucian responsible for either reviving or creating the FRC (Fraternitas Rosae Crucis), perhaps the oldest continuing Rosicrucian organization in the Americas. He practiced alternative medicine, and wrote and published works on it as well as (his version of) the teachings of Paschal Beverly Randolph (1825-1875), sex magic, vegetarianism, religion, alchemy, and Spiritualism. This led to a number of conflicts with Harvey Spencer Lewis (1883-1939) and the AMORC (Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis), FUDOSI, Aleister Crowley, and even the American Medical Association.

Book The Fellowship of the Spirit Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fellowship of the Spirit Classic Reprint written by Charles an Anderson Scott and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fellowship of the Spirit Religion is any and all reaction of the spirit of man to the approach of God. What gives the New Testament its unique place in the history of religion is that it records the most universal approach which God has made to man, and also the beginning of the human reaction to that approach alike in thought and in conduct. It records the latter also from several different angles. And the concurrence of these two forms of response is of the highest importance. For it is evidence of the arrival of power. And the character and direction of the power attest its origin as of God. The name given to that power in the New Testament is the Spirit of God. Its character and direction are ascertainable because it is also the Spirit of Christ, and Him we know as the Jesus of the Gospels. The characteristic feature of the Church of the New Testament is that it is the Church of the Spirit. The Spirit is at once its creative, and its normative force. As experienced by those who felt it, the coming of the Spirit may be described as an overwhelming sense of sonship, and an overwhelming sense of brotherhood. The evidence of the New Testament provides material for the study of these two factors of the religious consciousness. And it accredits their reality by the testimony it contains to corresponding standards of ethical achievement. Book What Is This Spiritualism

Download or read book What Is This Spiritualism written by Horace Leaf and published by Dickens Press. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...
