Download or read book Overcoming Niagara written by Janet Dorothy Larkin and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Overcoming Niagara Janet Dorothy Larkin analyzes the canal age from the perspective of the Niagara–Great Lakes borderland between 1792 and 1837. She shows what drove the transportation revolution, not the conventional story of westward expansion and the international/metropolitan rivalry between Great Britain and the United States, but a dynamic connection, cooperation, and healthy competition in a transnational-borderland region. Larkin focuses on North America's three most vital waterways—the Erie, Oswego, and Welland Canals. Canadian and American transportation leaders and promoters mutually sought to overcome the natural and artificial barriers presented by Niagara Falls by building an integrated, interconnected canal system, thus strengthening the borderland economy and propelling westward expansion, market development, and the Niagara tourist industry. On the heels of the Erie Canal's bicentennial in 2017, Overcoming Niagara explores the transnational nature of the canal age within the Niagara–Great Lakes borderland, and its impact on the commercial and cultural landscape of this porous region.
Download or read book Exploring Travel and Tourism written by Jennifer Erica Sweda and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring Travel and Tourism: Essays on Journeys and Destinations offers a broad treatment of topics in global travel/tourism studies through articles first presented at Travel and Tourism panels at Mid-Atlantic Popular/American Culture Association conferences between 2007 and 2010. Through archival research, close readings and case studies, the authors assembled here examine the significance of travel and the tourist experience over the last two hundred years, from Borneo to Cuba to Niagara Falls, and places in between. The contributions seek to unpack the meanings of nationality, postcolonialism, place, gender, class and the Self/Other dyad as they bump up against the framework of travel studies. Taken together, the articles speak to central issues in current scholarly debates about travel, tourism and culture from various historical, geographical and disciplinary perspectives. The contributions are grouped thematically into three sections. Part I, “The Personal Travel Narrative: Constructing the Self Through Encounters with the Other,” offers close readings of travelogues, both published and unpublished. Part II, “Constructing a National Identity Through Tourism,” details the ways that nations and states market themselves to tourists. Part III, “The Meaning of Journey; The Meaning of Destination,” investigates places, both real and created, and the ways people travel to get to them.

Download or read book Within the Landscape written by Phillip Earenfight and published by Trout Gallery of Dickinson College. This book was released on 2005 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteenth century, American artists, writers, and philosophers collaborated in the formation of a culture devoted to the country's natural splendors and the meanings these might harbor for its citizens. Arguably, the earliest and most influential of such pictorial and literary mergings took place in the Hudson River School, the subject of the essays gathered in this volume from the Trout Gallery of Dickinson College. The artists and writers discussed in this anthology range from Thomas Cole, the founder of the Hudson River School, to Stanford Gifford and Washington Irving. After an introduction to American landscape, the essays treat notions of divine presence in nature, the spread of imagery through prints, and the transformation of the Catskills into "a resort and a refuge." Offering innovative scholarship in accessible language, Within the Landscape lends itself to use as a textbook in courses on nineteenth-century American art and culture.
