If so, and we are to proceed according. To former customs, it certainly appears necessary that examinations of the dead should be made with great de liberation and accuracy. And nothing can be more conducive to this end, than that two or more professional men should be associated together. They will assist each other not merely mechanically, but by suggesting various points of in quiry. While he, who is most skilled in anatomy, is pursuing his dissection, the other may note the appearances as they successively present themselves - and the same course may be adopted while performing chemical experiments. The ad vantage will thus be attained, of having a complete account prepared at the moment of observation, which may be after wards reviewed both in coming to a decision on the case and in giving evidence before a jury. We all recognise the utility of discussion, in enabling us to weigh the merits of condict ing arguments, and the application of this may prevent many regrets, as well as prepare the mind for any difficulties that may be suggested. It should be recollected, that the opinion of a medical man before a coroner's jury, may consign an in dividual to a prison for months, and heap on him the imputa tion of the most horrid crimes. The first notice of the use of this salt for mercurial salivation appeared from this eminent physician in the Bulletin (16 T7zérap., for March, 1855. There appears to be no claim made by any one to the trial of this remedy for the purpose under consideration, prior to this date. Dr. Hutchinson remarks: to those who have confidence in the powers of the chlorate against other toms of stomatitis, the employment of it against that caused by mercury is but a very natural step, and there is nothing surprising in the circumstance that it should have sug gested itself to several independent observers about the same time. This appears to have been the case with the European observers, by none of whom was it noticed until three years atter I had commenced its use in practice. The difference in time is so great that it is but justice to mvself to claim priority in the discovery. During the three years previous to the time when this remedy was first tried by M. Herpin, I had used it so tiequently that it had ceased to he a novelty. 80 great became my confidence in it. During that period that the liberal use oi mercury, so frequently necessary in that country, was disarmed ot its most objectionable teature by the facility with which its unpleasant tendency to produce ptyalism could be arrested. English surgeons were here permitted, until lately, to engage private rooms for the purpose of lecturing on anatomy to students of their own na tion, and to superintend their labours in the dissecting room. From the protection and facilities which have thus been afforded to the study of ana tomy at Paris, it has become the resort of the medical students of all nations; the practice of exhumation is wholly unknown, and the feelings of the people appear not to be violated.
