Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Dental Journal, Vol. 5: March, 1862 A physician would not care to be treated with essays upon the dry rot; neither would the scientific subscriber to a mineralogical journal desire information upon the subject of Polypi of the Larynx; yet we have seen in some of the dental journals, articles, scissored from other periodicals, as little connected with the science of dentistry as an article upon squaring the circle would be with the profession of a horse jockey. It has been, and will be, the design of the new york dental journal, to publish nothing in its pages that shall appear in other journals - except as copied - and excepting also, reports of meet ings, which are, of course, Open to all. If we scissor, we shall try and scissor matters having some connection with the science we are seeking to advance, and the profession we are trying to elevate. Its attachment was partly from the middle turbinated bone and partly from the pharynx at the base of the skull It was so extremely vascular - bleeding freely on the slightest touch - that another Burgeon who was asked to operate on it declined to do so because he thought the patient might die under the operation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the New York Institute of Stomatology for 1904: Reprinted From the International Dental Journal Dr. Kimball called attention to the hickory sticks for holding the gum back in cervical operations. He had mentioned this method two years previously. Since that time he had been using another device of the same nature. Instead of the hickory he used a piece of thin steel cut and shaped to fit the individual case and then soldered with soft solder to a broken instrument. This could be cut carefully to fit the curve of the tooth and the gum, holding back the gum with the least possible pain. Brockway Sr. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Lecture Delivered Before the Third District Dental Association of the State of New York at Their First Meeting After Organization, January 12, 1869 I will mention two, out of several, methods of inserting pivot teeth, which should never have gone into disuse. First, the old style of pivot teeth, as made by myself, half silex, with a deeply threaded screw pivot hole, into which was screwed a strong straight-grained hickory pivot, with a gold wire passed through its centre. The hole in the roots being drilled, all its length of a size, was then enlarged at the upper end by means of a Spring-reamer. The drill and the pivot should be passed through the same hole in a wire plate; one end screwed into the crown, the other pressed into the root. To part them is impossible, without drilling. The other method, I would name, is this. Use the plate tooth, made of the old strong material, with two good pins, solder on a strong gold pivot, drill the root tapering, fill it with red cedar, pierce the centre, and drive the tooth home. In either of these ways skillfully done, the tooth will last on an average fifteen years, and give more satisfaction than any plate tooth ever can. For teeth inserted in this style we used to get five dollars each, and they were worth it. This practice has been superseded, it may be, for the profit of the dentist; but not for the people. Book The Archives of Dentistry 1886 Vol 3

Download or read book The Archives of Dentistry 1886 Vol 3 written by John G. Harper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Archives of Dentistry, A Monthly Record of Dental Science and Art is a surprisingly entertaining compendium of dentistry around the United States. The compilation is the successor to the Missouri Dental Journal and a consolidation of the New England Journal of Dentistry. The three publications combined forces to provide a comprehensive look at the practice of dentistry in the 19th Century. The first thing you learn reading The Archives of Dentistry, A Monthly Record of Dental Science and Art is that the practice of dentistry in the 19th Century is more advanced than one would have assumed. There are research papers on everything from the science of tooth decay, to the types of cement, to proper hygiene practices for patients. Case studies are presented throughout. Some cases seem roughly equivalent to how dental problems would be handled today, but in other instances the advice reads like horror or science fiction. For example, the professionals debate about whether teeth could be transplanted from one person to another. There is also a description of the uses of cocaine as anesthetic for operations, with the conclusion that it makes surgery completely painless. Minutes from local meetings of dental societies are also presented. For example, at the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Connecticut Valley Dental Society, the dentists share lectures on crown and bridgework before engaging in a round-table about specific case studies. These are great learning opportunities for readers, regardless of whether they are dental practitioners. Cultural stereotypes of the time surface, such as when a dentist says that when fillings were performed on the canine teeth of "the negro," the teeth were guaranteed to fail within three years. Strange ideas are presented, like the alleged relationship between abscessed teeth and the condition of the bowels. There are advertisements for things like tin foil, tooth powder, and Listerine sprinkled throughout the Archive. These observations, case studies and advertisements alone compel me to recommend The Archives of Dentistry, A Monthly Record of Dental Science and Art for a general audience, not just those interested in the dental profession. Book The Archives of Dentistry Vol 7

Download or read book The Archives of Dentistry Vol 7 written by W. H. Eames and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archives of Dentistry is an assortment of articles on dentistry from the turn of the nineteenth century. This publication is successor to the Missouri Dental Journal and represents a consolidation with that publication and the New England Journal of Dentistry. This edition has four illustrious editors: Dr. W. H. Eames, Dr. C. S. Stockton, Dr. John G. Harper, and Dr. William Conrad, and fifty individual contributors, each presenting a unique point of view on a different topic in the field of dentistry. Archives of Dentistry boasts that "No article will be published in this department that has been read before any society or has appeared in any publication" as an attempt to establish legitimacy as a leading source of information for anyone interested in the field. This volume consists of a well-spring of information for both dentists and dentistry enthusiasts. Topics covered include fillings, enamel, hygiene, dental legislation, ethics in dentistry, notable figures in dentistry, historic practices of dentistry, and new research and treatment. The book even includes some submissions on topics that are not directly related to dentistry, but often impact dentists in a tangential sense, namely hypnotism as a means of reducing anxiety and the inconvenience of mustaches! Archives of Dentistry is an interesting text full of articles on dental practice, history, and issues impacting dentists at the turn of the nineteenth century. This book is one of a series of books on dentistry and promises a wealth of topics to explore. An interesting read for those intrigued by dentistry and dental issues. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dominion Dental Journal, 1911, Vol. 23: Official Organ of the Canadian Dental Association It' is quite evident, according to researches made through the history of ages, that it has always been considered of more or less importance that the teeth, as well as other parts of the body, should be cleansed, in order that the individual might enjoy good health and the esteem of his fellows. The earliest Chinese works on medicine show that eighteen hundred years before Christ some attention was given to the care of the teeth. Download or read book The New York Dental Recorder Vol 2 written by C. C. Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Dental Recorder, Vol. 2: Devoted to the Theory and Practice of Surgical, Medical, and Mechanical Dentistry Dear Sir, - Allow me, through the medium of the Dental Recorder, to call the attention of parents, physicians, and Dentists to an opera tion upon children's teeth, which, so far as I am informed, has hereto fore received but little attention. I allude to the plugging or filling of deciduous teeth whenever they begin to decay. As these teeth are merely temporary, are destined soon to fall out, and their places to be supplied by a new and permanent set, they are generally regarded as of but little consequence, the decay is allowed to progress until the nerve is exposed, and the little patient becomes the Victim of excruciating pain, and is often obliged to submit to the operation of having them removed. When the operation of extrac tion is not resorted to, the consequences are often none the less sel vere. Generally, the decay continues, the nerves die, and the roots soon lose their vitality, and are not absorbed, as the roots of healthy teeth are, to make room for the new ones which are growing beneath them. These dead roots remaining in the jaw, frequently cause se vere and painful gum-boils, which often disturb the health of the whole system.
