Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Philosophy, Vol. 1 IN these times, when knowledge of all sorts is making such general progress, and science continually open ing further discoveries in nature, and also the means of practically applying them, it doubly imports that the moral progress - the progress of the mind - sh ould be equally attended to. I say, doubly; for first, the mind, as mind, is of most consequence, and that that therefore should be set in a state to take right views and form just conclusions, is the primary concern; for did not the mind first conceive, no action at all would follow, and where it conceives erroneously, ill effects result: secondly, therefore, when knowledge begins to enlighten mankind, and science, as now, to put power into their hands, by enabling them to lay hold, as it were, on the elements, -to use, and in some de gree, command them, - it is of vital importance that the directing mind should be enlarged with that increase of power. It would be dreadful, indeed, if the power were increased, but the mind not at the B. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Philosophy, Vol. 2 I shall now proceed to offer my system - the founda tion from which I take my views, and on which my theories will be built, and which I have a hope will be found to be based on truth. It is in the strict sense of the word Philosophy that my book presumes to assume that name; for philosopher means only a lover of truth. It was, indeed, to find the truth that first put me on examination, and seeking one, another and another opened to my thought. I quickly framed out of them a system; to draw my inferences I used only reason, and applying them to Nature they seemed to agree with her. This looked like evi dence. I had not sought my views by science, but after having found, I endeavoured as much as I could to bring science to try them, and again it appeared to me that in every instance in which science was made their test, it also became their proof, often even to demonstration. Download or read book University of California Publications in Philosophy Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by University Of California and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of California Publications in Philosophy, Vol. 1 The second meaning of 'good' is 'desired.' Whatever we wish for, is in so far good' in this signification of the term, which is likewise very common and should no more be criticised than the actually current signification of any other term in gen eral use. It may also be pointed out that it is quite possible to reconcile the definition of 'good' as 'pleasant' and that of 'good' as desired, ' by referring to the psychological fact that What is pleasant is generally also desired. Now Whether we say that a thing is good just because it is pleasant, or whether we say that the pleasant thing is good' because as pleasant it is desired, is, as we have already indicated, to be decided only by an arbitrary choice in favor of one or other of the two possible definitions. Personally I must confess that I prefer to merge the first meaning of 'good' as 'pleasant' into the second meaning of it as 'desired, ' for the reason that the second can easily be made to include the first by reference to the psychological fact just stated. Thus our list of the various meanings of the term is shortened, and we get a more comprehensive conception, including both the 'pleasant, ' because what is pleasant is desired, and also things not pleasant which may likewise be desired. Download or read book A History of Modern Philosophy Vol 1 written by Harald Hoffding and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Modern Philosophy, Vol. 1: A Sketch of the History of Philosophy From the Close of the Renaissance to Our Own Day The appearance of a new representation of an important period in the History of Philosophy will naturally give rise to the ques tion as to what view of philosophy is regarded by the author as fundamental, and what is the significance, and what the value which he ascribes to its history. To which I answer that the whole aim of the studies of which the publication of this book denotes the provisional conclusion has been to shed light on the question as to what philosophy really is. As we learn to know a man from his biography, so also we must be able to learn to know a science from its history. And it is the more natural that we should adopt this path, since experience is continually showing us that, within the sphere of philosophy, contending views are advanced, each one of which claims to be valid, so that there is. No one exposition of philosophy to which we can point as developing an exhaustive conception of it. It is natural, therefore, that we should here, as within the sphere of religion, employ the comparative method. The history of philosophy treats of the attempts which have been made by individual thinkers to discuss the ultimate problems of know ledge and of life. It will be a result of no small importance, therefore, if we can show clearly what are the problems with which philosophy deals, how these problems have presented themselves at different times, and what, in each case, were the conditions which determined the different statements of the problems, and the attempts at their solution. If such a result can be approximately attained, the study of the history of philosophy will be of no small importance for the future development of philosophy itself. Book Christian Philosophy Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christian Philosophy Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Ephraim Langdon Frothingham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Philosophy, Vol. 1 Christian philosophy is necessarily founded upon conceptions of the nature of God, of the origin and nature of the universe, and of the relation of God to the universe and to man. In our time, the greatest con fusion exists, even within the precincts of the Christian chui ch, with regard to these fundamental ideas and conceptions which contradict each other are recognized, either from an external eclecticism, or from an internal inversion by the Destructive Reason with the view to confound opposite ideas in the interest of a nihilistic or of a pantheistic philosophy. This perversion and inver Sion of Christian thought are produced by transcendental philosophy (german in origin) and by evolutionary sci ence (english in origin), which work together to establish in the Church an Antichristian, materialistic, and panthe istic philosophy. There is, in our century, and extending to all departments of intelligence, a renaissance of Pagan thought quite analogous to that effected in the fifteenth century and onward, and our period, equally with that, calls for a new birth or regeneration of Christian thought from a more universal insight into the fundamental ideas of Christianity. From 'the very need of it, therefore, we may look for a new dogmatic form of Christian theology that shall iflcorporate the fundamental and primitive ideas of Christianity, as an historical institution, in forms of imaginative thought which Shall correspond to that more internal condition of the Reason and of the Re. Download or read book A New Philosophy of History written by Frank Ankersmit and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1995-10-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is history? From Thucydides to Toynbee historians and nonhistorians alike have wondered how to answer this question. A New Philosophy of History reflects on developments over the last two decades in historical writing, not least the renewed interest in the status of narrative itself and the presence of the authorial "voice." Subjects include the problems of Grand Narrative, multiple voices and the personal presence of the historian in his text, the ambitions of the French Annales school and the so-called "Grand Chronicler," and the relevance of non-literary models—museum presentations and picturings—regarding historical discourse. The range of approaches found in A New Philosophy of History ensures that this book will establish itself as required reading not only for historians, but for everyone interested in literary theory, philosophy, or cultural studies. This volume presents essays by Hans Kellner, Nancy F. Partner, Richard T. Vann, Arthur C. Danto, Linda Orr, Philippe Carrard, Ann Rigney, Allan Megill, Robert Berkhofer, Stephen Bann, and Frank Ankersmit.
