Book The New Organon Novum Organum Hardcover

Download or read book The New Organon Novum Organum Hardcover written by Francis Bacon and published by . This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Organon (in Latin, Novum Organum) is a historic work by Francis Bacon which lays out the system of logic which became known as the Baconian Method. Originally penned in Latin, this text discusses the various methods of reasoning one may use to come to a sound conclusion. The philosophical debate on the nature of inductive and reductive thinking has seen scholars deem The New Organon to be one of the first writings to signify the Enlightenment period of human development. It would also prove notable for its questioning of antiquity: until this time, Greek thought on logic had gone largely unchallenged. Perhaps most significantly of all is this work's impact upon the eventual formulation of the scientific method. Although strictly a text of philosophy, it was the intellectual rigors described by Bacon that were to become a forebear to the intensive development of the sciences in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the New Organon appeared in 1620, part of a six-part programme of scientific inquiry entitled 'The Great Renewal of Learning', Francis Bacon was at the high point of his political career, and his ambitious work was groundbreaking in its attempt to give formal philosophical shape to a new and rapidly emerging experimentally-based science. Bacon combines theoretical scientific epistemology with examples from applied science, examining phenomena as various as magnetism, gravity, and the ebb and flow of the tides, and anticipating later experimental work by Robert Boyle and others. His work challenges the entire edifice of the philosophy and learning of his time, and has left its mark on all subsequent philosophical discussions of scientific method. This volume presents a new translation of the text into modern English by Michael Silverthorne, and an introduction by Lisa Jardine that sets the work in the context of Bacon's scientific and philosophical activities.

The "Novum Organum," full original title "Novum Organum Scientiarum" or 'new instrument of science', is a Bacon's landmark work scientific method. First published in 1620, the title is a reference to Aristotle's work "Organon," which was his treatise on logic and syllogism. Bacon outlines a new system of logic he believes to be superior to the old ways of syllogism. This is now known as the Baconian method. For Bacon, finding the essence of a thing was a simple process of reduction, and the use of inductive reasoning. In finding the cause of a 'phenomenal nature' such as heat, one must list all of the situations where heat is found. Then another list should be drawn up, listing situations that are similar to those of the first list except for the lack of heat. A third table lists situations where heat can vary. The 'form nature', or cause, of heat must be that which is common to all instances in the first table, is lacking from all instances of the second table and varies by degree in instances of the third table. Bacon's work was instrumental in the historical development of the scientific method. Includes Bacon's Essay on "Great Instauration," and "Preparative Toward a Material and Experimental History."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an exploration of the theoretical, conceptual and methodological foundations of human-centred design. Specifically, it critically examines the notion of 'practice' and argues for an understanding of the concept which emanates from engagement with design problems rather than simply from social scientific theory. The contributors to the book in their various ways all subscribe to a systematic account of how practice- oriented studies can inform design. Using the perspective of 'grounded design', it pursues a long term view of the design process, arguing for user engagement from the very earliest stages of design policy, including methods for understanding user practices to inform initial design policies up to and including processes of appropriation as technologies are embedded in contexts of use. Grounded design is a perspective which also deals with the vexed problem of appropriate generalization in design studies and the kinds of cross-comparison that can usefully be done. The book contains a number of case studies which exemplify these themes, some of which are rooted in the use of technology in organizational contexts, others of which deal with design in contexts such as care of the elderly, firefighting and multicultural education.

Book Shylock and the Jewish Question

Download or read book Shylock and the Jewish Question written by Martin D. Yaffe and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Yaffe provides a wide-ranging and probing reflection on the portrayal of Jews and Judaism in early modern thought. His innovative approach to the problem of Shakespeare's treatment of Shylock can stand for the originality of his book as a whole... Yaffe's interpretations are likely to prove controversial, but they are always thought-provoking." -- Virginia Quarterly Review Much attention has been paid to the place of Shylock in the history of anti-Semitism. Most scholars have agreed with Harold Bloom that Shakespeare's famous villain is drawn with a "murderous anti-Semitism" and that Shakespeare uncritically mirrors the rife anti-Semitism of his times. While others see only gross caricature in The Merchant of Venice, however, Martin Yaffe finds a subtle analysis of the Jew's place in a largely Christian society. In Shylock and the Jewish Question, Yaffe challenges the widespread assumption that Shakespeare is, in the final analysis, unfriendly to Jews. He finds that Shakespeare's consideration of Judaism in The Merchant of Venice provides an important contrast to Marlowe's virulent The Jew of Malta. In many ways, he argues, Shakespeare's play is even more accepting than Francis Bacon's notably inclusive New Atlantis or the Jewish philosopher Benedict Spinoza's argument for tolerance in the Theologico-Political Treatise. "Although Yaffe focuses on the Jewish question, his study is a lead-in to a study of the rise of liberal democracy, the development of religious toleration, the relation of church and state, and the inter-relation between politics, economics and religion -- all of these being vital in history's evolution towards modernity." -- Serge Liberman, Australian JewishNews "In a critique that promises to refuel scholarly controversy over the portrait of Shylock... Yaffe's retro-prospective approach to its political philosophy suggests interesting possibilities for contrasting popular anti-Semitic culture and the more tolerant, enlightened statesmanship of the seventeenth-century." -- Frances Barasch, Shakespeare Bulletin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard rules of probability can be interpreted as uniquely valid principles in logic. In this book, E. T. Jaynes dispels the imaginary distinction between 'probability theory' and 'statistical inference', leaving a logical unity and simplicity, which provides greater technical power and flexibility in applications. This book goes beyond the conventional mathematics of probability theory, viewing the subject in a wider context. New results are discussed, along with applications of probability theory to a wide variety of problems in physics, mathematics, economics, chemistry and biology. It contains many exercises and problems, and is suitable for use as a textbook on graduate level courses involving data analysis. The material is aimed at readers who are already familiar with applied mathematics at an advanced undergraduate level or higher. The book will be of interest to scientists working in any area where inference from incomplete information is necessary.

Book Tertium Organum

Download or read book Tertium Organum written by P. D. Ouspensky and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Moscow in 1878, Pyotr Demianovich Ouspenskii was a precocious scholar who rejected the chance of academic advancement to travel and write. Ouspensky drew a distinction between commonplace knowledge and what he termed 'important knowledge' the acquisition of which he considered the chief aim of life. Driven by this desire he read avidly, and traveled widely throughout Asia and the Middle East. Ouspensky's own attempts to reach higher states of consciousness convinced him that a third instrument of thought was necessary to liberate humanity from the classical and positivistic modes of thinking that dominated western society (the 'Organon' of Aristotle and the 'Novum Organum' of Bacon). First published in 1922, 'Tertium Organum' ranges brilliantly over a wide swathe of subjects, from Western science through sacred art and symbology to the mysticism of both East and West. Widely regarded as a masterpiece, the work proved an immediate bestseller and established Ouspensky as a major contributor to Twentieth century thought. A fascinating and important book for all those interested in this life's 'important knowledge'.
