Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marc Blitzstein was one of the 20th century's most important American composers, lyricists, and critics, often credited with having virtually invented opera in the American vernacular. Called the father of American opera in the vernacular by luminaries Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein, Blitzstein was a masterful pianist, coach, and accompanist, though, ironically, he made more money on the lyrics to one song—Mack the Knife—than on everything else he ever did. Blitzstein's brilliant career was cut short in 1964 when he died at the age of 58. This book catalogs Blitzstein's own writings and writings about him, followed by detailed listings (chronological, alphabetical, and genre), analysis, a comprehensive performance history, and summaries of all known critiques of his 128 original musical works and 18 texts set to the music of others. Shown in detail are the ways in which Blitzstein took music from his earlier works and developed it in later works, a process that Lehrman utilized in completing (with Bernstein's and the Estate's approval) 20 Blitzstein works for performance, including The Cradle Will Rock, I've Got the Tune, No for an Answer, Idiots First, and Sacco and Vanzetti, which Blitzstein believed would be his magnum opus. The book provides a unique and full perspective on the works of one of America's greatest composers—one who deserves to be better known.

Book British Rock Modernism 1967 1977

Download or read book British Rock Modernism 1967 1977 written by Barry J. Faulk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Rock Modernism, 1967-1977 explains how the definitive British rock performers of this epoch aimed, not at the youthful rebellion for which they are legendary, but at a highly self-conscious project of commenting on the business in which they were engaged. They did so by ironically appropriating the traditional forms of Victorian music hall. Faulk focuses on the mid to late 1960s, when British rock bands who had already achieved commercial prominence began to aspire to aesthetic distinction. The book discusses recordings such as the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour album, the Kinks' The Village Green Preservation Society, and the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, and television films such as the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour and the Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus that defined rock's early high art moment. Faulk argues that these 'texts' disclose the primary strategies by which British rock groups, mostly comprised of young working and lower middle-class men, made their bid for aesthetic merit by sampling music hall sounds. The result was a symbolically charged form whose main purpose was to unsettle the hierarchy that set traditional popular culture above the new medium. Rock groups engaged with the music of the past in order both to demonstrate the comparative vitality of the new form and signify rock's new art status, compared to earlier British pop music. The book historicizes punk rock as a later development of earlier British rock, rather than a rupture. Unlike earlier groups, the Sex Pistols did not appropriate music hall form in an ironic way, but the band and their manager Malcolm McLaren were obsessed with the meaning of the past for the present in a distinctly modernist fashion.

Book Style and Performance for Bowed String Instruments in French Baroque Music

Download or read book Style and Performance for Bowed String Instruments in French Baroque Music written by Mary Cyr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Cyr addresses the needs of researchers, performers, and informed listeners who wish to apply knowledge about historically informed performance to specific pieces. Special emphasis is placed upon the period 1680 to 1760, when the viol, violin, and violoncello grew to prominence as solo instruments in France. Part I deals with the historical background to the debate between the French and Italian styles and the features that defined French style. Part II summarizes the present state of research on bowed string instruments (violin, viola, cello, contrebasse, pardessus de viole, and viol) in France, including such topics as the size and distribution of parts in ensembles and the role of the contrebasse. Part III addresses issues and conventions of interpretation such as articulation, tempo and character, inequality, ornamentation, the basse continue, pitch, temperament, and "special effects" such as tremolo and harmonics. Part IV introduces four composer profiles that examine performance issues in the music of Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, Marin Marais, Jean-Baptiste Barrière, and the Forquerays (father and son). The diversity of compositional styles among this group of composers, and the virtuosity they incorporated in their music, generate a broad field for discussing issues of performance practice and offer opportunities to explore controversial themes within the context of specific pieces.

Book Music Gender and Sexuality Studies

Download or read book Music Gender and Sexuality Studies written by Jacqueline Warwick and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music, Gender, and Sexuality Studies: A Teacher’s Guide serves as a guide to the professor tasked with teaching music to undergraduates, with a focus on gender. Although the notion of feminist approaches in musicology was once greeted with scorn, the last 40 years have seen a seismic shift across music studies, to the point that classes on women and music are now commonplace in most undergraduate music program. The goal of this book is to give the instructor some tools and strategies that will build confidence in approaching music as it relates to gender and sexuality, and to offer some advice on how to make the class rewarding for all. The book is organized into four broad sections, plus an introduction outlining how to use the book and how the teaching of music, gender, and sexuality can be rewarding. Each section – Composition, Support, Performance, and Audience – includes possible themes for study and examples of music that can illuminate those themes, allowing the instructor to shape the course according to their own preference for classical, jazz, or popular styles. The author offers a practical guide to building syllabi that can fit the instructor’s interests and the priorities of the institution, crafting assignments that will engage and inspire students, choosing repertoire from a range of styles and genres, and maintaining a focus on how music shapes gender, and how gender shapes music.
