Book excerpt: THE NEW MANDALA, Eastern Wisdom for Western Living, written in collaboration with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, is a journey toward spiritual awakening and rediscovery. On one level it is an engaging and entertaining journal of a Christian clergyman's quest for enlightenment. On another level it is a road map for the reader's own spiritual journey. It is an invitation to the readers to explore the wisdom and practice of Buddhism, while at the same time illuminating and reclaiming the inherited faith of their formation. Rev. John Lundin, a Protestant minister, enters into the world of Tibetan Buddhism in search of a new spirituality. The quest takes him - and the reader - on a journey to Dharamsala in north India, the home of His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet. In private dialogues with His Holiness, the author discovers the empowering affinity between Buddhism and Christianity, and weaves the personal experiences of his own pilgrimage with the wisdom and teaching of the Dalai Lama.

Book Buddhist Fury

  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

  • ISBN : 019933966X

Download or read book Buddhist Fury written by Michael K. Jerryson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddhist violence is not a well-known concept. In fact, it is generally considered an oxymoron. An image of a Buddhist monk holding a handgun or the idea of a militarized Buddhist monastery tends to stretch the imagination; yet these sights exist throughout southern Thailand. Michael Jerryson offers an extensive examination of one of the least known but longest-running conflicts of Southeast Asia. Part of this conflict, based primarily in Thailand's southernmost provinces, is fueled by religious divisions. Thailand's total population is over 92 percent Buddhist, but over 85 percent of the people in the southernmost provinces are Muslim. Since 2004, the Thai government has imposed martial law over the territory and combatted a grass-roots militant Malay Muslim insurgency. Buddhist Fury reveals the Buddhist parameters of the conflict within a global context. Through fieldwork in the conflict area, Jerryson chronicles the habits of Buddhist monks in the militarized zone. Many Buddhist practices remain unchanged. Buddhist monks continue to chant, counsel the laity, and accrue merit. Yet at the same time, monks zealously advocate Buddhist nationalism, act as covert military officers, and equip themselves with guns. Buddhist Fury displays the methods by which religion alters the nature of the conflict and shows the dangers of this transformation.

Download or read book Journey to the Heart of the World written by John Lundin and published by Humanitas Media Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synopsis: A parable-like work of fiction reminiscent of the work of Paulo Coelho, Journey to the Heart of the World was written while the author, John Lundin, was living among and learning from the indigenous tribes of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in northern Colombia. Its message, both humanitarian and environmental, asks us to take heed of the messages of Nature and to care for the Earth and Her people, while also finding our own true place in the world as individual human beings. Praise for Journey to the Heart of the World: John Lundin has written a book, Journey to the Heart of the World, that carries ancient wisdom, wrapped in a vision quest, inside an adventure story. -- Michael Brune, Executive Director, Sierra Club The world is so weary and filled with fear; our souls are longing now for enchantment and hope. John Lundin has traveled to the heart of things, emerging with the light that guides our fearful hearts back home. -- Marianne Williamson, #1 New York Times best-selling author of A Return to Love Every voice that comes out of Colombia's Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a vision of hope. John Lundin writes from the heart, and the heart that he invokes is the very heart of the world, the mountains of the Elder Brothers, the homeland of the Kogi, Arhuacos and Wiwa. His book, like their message, is a road map to a new dream of the Earth. -- Wade Davis, National Geographic Explorer of the Millennium, best-selling author of The Serpent and the Rainbow and The Wayfinders: Why Ancient Wisdom Matters in the Modern World One can only admire John Lundin's commitment to seeking personal enlightenment by integrating his search for spiritual meaning, his love and concern for the natural world and the expression of these passions in an artistic statement. This novel is the story of a personal journey seeking universal truths that only the natural world can offer. It's a tale for both young and old to learn and be inspired by. -- Ed Kashi, Photojournalist, filmmaker, storyteller, member of VII Photo, NatGeo contributor, founder of Talking Eyes Media

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Struggling with depression, anxiety, illness, an eating disorder, a difficult relationship, fear, self-hatred, addiction or anger? Renowned Buddhist leader Tsultrim Allione explains that the harder we fight our demons, the stronger they become. Offering Eastern answers to Western needs, Tsultrim seamlessly weaves traditions from Tibet and the Western world to offer a new and unique answer to the problems that plague us: that rather than attempt to purge them, we need to reverse our approach and nurture our demons. This powerful five-step practice forms a strategy for transforming negative emotions, relationships, fears, illness and self-defeating patterns. This will help you cope with the inner enemies that undermine our best intentions.
