Book excerpt: The riveting story of the fight for same-sex marriage in the United States--the most important civil rights breakthrough of the new millennium. On June 26, 2015, the United States Supreme Court ruled that state bans on gay marriage were unconstitutional, making same-sex unions legal throughout the United States. But the road to victory was much longer than many know. In this seminal work, Sasha Issenberg takes us back to Hawaii in the 1990s, when that state's supreme court first started grappling with the issue, and traces the fight for marriage equality from the enactment of the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 to the Goodridge decision that made Massachusetts the first state to legalize same-sex marriage, and finally to the seminal Supreme Court decisions of Windsor and Obergefell. This meticulously reported work sheds new light on every aspect of this fraught history and brings to life the perspectives of those who fought courageously for the right to marry as well as those who fervently believed that same-sex marriage would destroy the nation. It is sure to become the definitive book on one of the most important civil rights fights of our time.

Book Rules of Engagement

Download or read book Rules of Engagement written by Lis Harris and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-07-03 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative book, the acclaimed author of Holy Days, Lis Harris, offers a fascinating look at the institution of marriage: how it is changing, what it may yet become. Rules of Engagement follows the trials and triumphs of four very real couples: upper-class Sarah and Eaton, whose 1950s marriage has been transformed in the wake of feminism; working-class Mike and Claire, who have struggled through multiple separations and reconciliations in their common-law marriage; middle-class African-Americans Carlita and Samuel, striving to succeed with their two young children in an often hostile world; and middle-aged Neal and Vera, idealists whose relationship has survived an experiment with "open marriage." From these four couples, Harris draws invaluable lessons about relationships in general and about the unique nature of American marriage, an institution that continues to thrive in an ever-changing world because of our willingness to experiment with and reinvent it.

Book The New Matrimonial Legislation

Download or read book The New Matrimonial Legislation written by Charles Cronin and published by . This book was released on 2013-05-26 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On the 20th of May, 1905, the Sacred Congregation of the Council met to consider the petitions which the Cardinal Archbisop of Paris and the Cardinal Bishop of Breslau had made to the Holy See to relax in some measure the stringency of the law relating to domicile and quasi-domicile as far as these affect the validity of the Sacrament of Matrimony. Some remissions had already been granted, but they were only local privileges, which were granted on account of special local circumstances, and which therefore could not be claimed beyond the places for which the concessions had been made. Thus the Archbishop of Paris had in 1898 (9th of November) obtained the privilege that the fact of residence for six months in a parish of the city of Paris, was sufficient for the acquisition of a quasi-domicile enabling a person to marry validly in that parish, and that there was no necessity to enquire into the intention of residing there for the greater part of a year." begins the history behind this decree.Catholic Marriage Law has varied over the centuries. A large step forward was made, when the Council of Trent published Tametsi. However, this only applied in those places where it was legally published. Thus the Church had two marriage laws in operation, depending on the domicile of the parties involved. The Vatican Council of 1869-1870 desired a codification of Canon Law, which was completed under Pope Benedict XV in 1917. Part of this led to a unification and clarification of Catholic Church Law on Matrimony, which is set out in this important landmark decree.Anyone wishing to understanding Catholic marriage law must study this decree as well as the subsequent caons of the Code of Canon Law, which evolved from it.
