Book The New Household Discoveries

Download or read book The New Household Discoveries written by Sidney Morse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 862 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Household Discoveries: An Encyclopedia of Recipes and Processes First Aid to the Injured and to sundry other authorities too numer ous to mention. Already upward of a million copies of household discoveries have been distributed, and there is abundant evidence that the American people regard the millions of dollars paid for them not as an expense, but as an investment. For the keynote of the letters of endorsement received by the publishers is economy. Multitudes have said that by the use of a single recipe they have saved as much or more than the cost to them of the entire volume. Indeed, it would be difficult to over-es timate the possibilities of saving in time, in money, and in human suf feting that would result if every family in the land should observe the teachings on Diet, on Laundering and Dry-cleaning, on the Care of In fauts, and on the Prevention of Communicable Disease, approved by the leading authorities and set forth in these pages. It is believed that no volume before the American people is better calculated to enable its owners to effect needful economies, and that no service could be more patriotic than to promote to the utmost possible extent its distribution and use. Download or read book A New Human written by Mike Morwood and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-03-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 2004, a team of Australian and Indonesian anthropologists led by Mike Morwood and Raden Pandji Soejono stunned the world with their announcement of the discovery of the first example of a new species of human, Homo floresiensis, which they nicknamed the "Hobbit." This was no creation of Tolkien's fantasy, however, but a tool-using, fire-making, cooperatively hunting person. The more Morwood and his colleagues revealed about the find, the more astonishing it became: standing only three feet tall with brains a little larger than a can of cola, the Hobbits forced anthropologists and everyone to reconsider what it means to be human. Morwood's work was no ordinary academic exercise. Along the way he had to tread warily through the cultural landscape of Indonesia—he has an embarrassing mishap with some hard-to-chew pork—and he demonstrated that sometimes the life of a real archaeologist can be a bit like Indiana Jones's when he risked his neck in an ocean-going raft to experience how ancient Indonesians might have navigated the archipelago. Even more, Morwood had to navigate the rock shoals of an archaeological bureaucracy that could be obtuse and even spiteful, and when the Hobbits became embroiled in scientific controversy—as no find of such magnitude could avoid—it proved easy for Morwood to get nearly swamped with trouble. Finds were stolen and damaged, and the backbiting was fierce. But the light of science, once brightened, is difficult to dim, and the story of the indefatigable Morwood's fight to defend his find discovery is an inspiration.

Book The Discovery of the Asylum

Download or read book The Discovery of the Asylum written by David J. Rothman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a masterful effort to recognize and place the prison and asylums in their social contexts. Rothman shows that the complexity of their history can be unraveled and usefully interpreted. By identifying the salient influences that converged in the tumultuous 1820s and 1830s that led to a particular ideology in the development of prisons and asylums, Rothman provides a compelling argument that is historically informed and socially instructive. He weaves a comprehensive story that sets forth and portrays a series of interrelated events, influences, and circumstances that are shown to be connected to the development of prisons and asylums. Rothman demonstrates that meaningful historical interpretation must be based upon not one but a series of historical events and circumstances, their connections and ultimate consequences. Thus, the history of prisons and asylums in the youthful United States is revealed to be complex but not so complex that it cannot be disentangled, described, understood, and applied. This reissue of a classic study addresses a core concern of social historians and criminal justice professionals: Why in the early nineteenth century did a single generation of Americans resort for the first time to institutional care for its convicts, mentally ill, juvenile delinquents, orphans, and adult poor? Rothman's compelling analysis links this phenomenon to a desperate effort by democratic society to instill a new social order as it perceived the loosening of family, church, and community bonds. As debate persists on the wisdom and effectiveness of these inherited solutions, The Discovery of the Asylum offers a fascinating reflection on our past as well as a source of inspiration for a new century of students and professionals in criminal justice, corrections, social history, and law enforcement.
