Book Representing Renaissance Art C 1500 C 1600

Download or read book Representing Renaissance Art C 1500 C 1600 written by Catherine King and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing Renaissance Art, c.1500-c.1600 is a study of change and continuity in the iconographics of art and the visual representation of artists during the 16th century, especially in Italy and the Netherlands. This book considers the maintenance of well-established traditions for the visual representation of artists and also examines the new iconographics that emerged in the 16th century. By highlighting art and architecture which artists designed for their personal use--including the decoration of their houses--this study provides insight into the tastes and ways of looking special to artists. By examining the visual evidence we see the opinions both of artists who expressed their views in literary texts, and additionally those of artists who did not publish their ideas in written form.

An emphasis on works by later sixteenth- and seventeenth-century artists is balanced by a selection of German drawings from the fifteenth and earlier sixteenth century, of which some of the most exceptional ones--including works by Albrecht Deurer--entered the Museum with The Robert Lehman Collection in 1975."--Publisher's website.

Book Old Age in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance

Download or read book Old Age in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance written by Albrecht Classen and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-02-14 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After an extensive introduction that takes stock of the relevant research literature on Old Age in the Middle Ages and the early modern age, the contributors discuss the phenomenon of old age in many different fields of late antique, medieval, and early modern literature, history, and art history. Both Beowulf and the Hildebrandslied, both Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival and Titurel, both the figure of Merlin and the trans-European tradition of Perceval/Peredur/Parzival, then the figure of the vetula in a variety of medieval French, English, and Spanish texts, and of the Old Man in The Stricker's Daniel, both the treatment of old age in Langland's Piers the Plowman and in Jean Gerson's sermons are dealt with. Other aspects involve late-antique epistolary literature, early modern French farce in light of Disability Studies, the social role of old, impotent men in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Netherlandish paintings, and the scientific discourse of old age and health since the 1500s. The discourse of Old Age proves to have been of central importance throughout the ages, so the critical examination of the issues involved sheds intriguing light on the cultural history from late antiquity to the seventeenth century.

Book Venice Durer and the Oriental Mode

Download or read book Venice Durer and the Oriental Mode written by Julian Raby and published by Philip Wilson Publishers. This book was released on 1982 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to clarify Venetian Quattrocento Orientalism, which affected Durer and thus Northern Europe, and to define the sources and practitioners of its Oriental motifs. At the end of the fifteenth century a large number of paintings were produced in Venice that depict exotic animals and figures set against the backdrop of Oriental architecture. It was Europe's earliest attempt to portray Muslims in a Muslim habitat, but it was more than a vague and ill-informed evocation of the East. Realistic in many of their details, these Orientalist pictures reflect the Serenissima's political and mercantile links with the fifteenth century Islamic Empires of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Book Mapping Spaces

Download or read book Mapping Spaces written by Ulrike Gehring and published by Hirmer Verlag GmbH. This book was released on 2014 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ZKM throws new light on 17th century landscape painting. Comparable to modern satellite surveying (GPS), true to scale landscape representation is also indebted to the interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge: the alliance of geodesists, mathematicians, instrument makers and painters. Artists had designed modern surveying systems long before new media drew on images from outer space. The exhibition "Mapping Spaces" examines, for the first time ever on this scale, the influence of early modern guide books in geography, the science of surveying and the construction of fortification on Dutch painting around 1650. The prelude to the project, developed at the University of Trier, is Pieter Snayers' large-format depiction of historical battle scenes, in which maps and landscape paintings are projected over one another so as to document the most recent developments in modern engineering, ballistics and the fortification construction. Over 220 exhibits, among them paintings, surveying instruments, graphics devices, books, maps and globes drawn from the most important collections of works, such as from the Prado (Madrid), the Louvre (Paris), the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam) or the Kunsthistorischen Museum (Vienna) testify to these new theses in pictorial science. The new mapping of an early modern area of knowledge is accompanied by contemporary works of art that thematize the influence of technological developments on our present-day perception of space.--Museum website.
