Have you ever used morphia locally, and with what results? A. I have used morphia locally in my earlier practice until I found that its effect was too slight to recommend its further use. If you give morphia internally to that class of patients who need it most, you will find that it renders them so sick and produces such general unpleasant symptoms that it seems hardly advisable to use it. If I now would use it at all, I would use it in combination with aconite, locally. Q. Have you enclosed solid morphia in a cavity, and with what effect? Book The Archives of Dentistry 1886 Vol 3

Download or read book The Archives of Dentistry 1886 Vol 3 written by John G. Harper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Archives of Dentistry, A Monthly Record of Dental Science and Art is a surprisingly entertaining compendium of dentistry around the United States. The compilation is the successor to the Missouri Dental Journal and a consolidation of the New England Journal of Dentistry. The three publications combined forces to provide a comprehensive look at the practice of dentistry in the 19th Century. The first thing you learn reading The Archives of Dentistry, A Monthly Record of Dental Science and Art is that the practice of dentistry in the 19th Century is more advanced than one would have assumed. There are research papers on everything from the science of tooth decay, to the types of cement, to proper hygiene practices for patients. Case studies are presented throughout. Some cases seem roughly equivalent to how dental problems would be handled today, but in other instances the advice reads like horror or science fiction. For example, the professionals debate about whether teeth could be transplanted from one person to another. There is also a description of the uses of cocaine as anesthetic for operations, with the conclusion that it makes surgery completely painless. Minutes from local meetings of dental societies are also presented. For example, at the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Connecticut Valley Dental Society, the dentists share lectures on crown and bridgework before engaging in a round-table about specific case studies. These are great learning opportunities for readers, regardless of whether they are dental practitioners. Cultural stereotypes of the time surface, such as when a dentist says that when fillings were performed on the canine teeth of "the negro," the teeth were guaranteed to fail within three years. Strange ideas are presented, like the alleged relationship between abscessed teeth and the condition of the bowels. There are advertisements for things like tin foil, tooth powder, and Listerine sprinkled throughout the Archive. These observations, case studies and advertisements alone compel me to recommend The Archives of Dentistry, A Monthly Record of Dental Science and Art for a general audience, not just those interested in the dental profession. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Dental Journal, Vol. 5: March, 1862 A physician would not care to be treated with essays upon the dry rot; neither would the scientific subscriber to a mineralogical journal desire information upon the subject of Polypi of the Larynx; yet we have seen in some of the dental journals, articles, scissored from other periodicals, as little connected with the science of dentistry as an article upon squaring the circle would be with the profession of a horse jockey. It has been, and will be, the design of the new york dental journal, to publish nothing in its pages that shall appear in other journals - except as copied - and excepting also, reports of meet ings, which are, of course, Open to all. If we scissor, we shall try and scissor matters having some connection with the science we are seeking to advance, and the profession we are trying to elevate. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ohio State Journal of Dental Science, 1884, Vol. 4 By way of a more comprehensive introductory to the new method, their indulgence is asked for a few retrospective remarks in reference to the 0e Method, and the present status Of the ques tion Cohesive versus Noncohesive Gold. Without doubt, the introduction of cohesive gold and the mallet opened an extended field Of usefulness to the dental opera tor. Thousands Of teeth which, previous to this period could not possibly have been filled and saved with gold, could now not only be filled, but the original shape of the tooth could also be com pletely restored; indeed, whole crowns were Often built up by means Of cohesive gold. And as a natural consequence, within one decade after its introduction the Operative branch of dentistry underwent a complete change. The Old method Of filling teeth with noncohesive gold was gradually laid aside, and every opera tor who desired to keep pace with the times, turned his attention to the acquirement of that peculiar manipulative ability requisite in the use of cohesive gold. Book Ohio State Journal of Dental Science 1882 Vol 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ohio State Journal of Dental Science, 1882, Vol. 2 Thirty years ago, metal plates were used exclusively, and today they are the only suitable material, in all respects, for artificial dentures. Thirty years ago, gum sections were carved for each case, and mounted on gold plates, and were used very extensively throughout the Eastern States. But today the moulded sections have taken their place, and the result is a stereotyped, stiff and unnatural looking system of artificial teeth. Thirty years ago, Dr. John Allen brought to the notice of the profession his Continuous Gum Work, and it remains to-day unchallenged as the only perfect method of constructing artificial dentures, and I must confess I see little room for improvement. Thirty years ago, it required at least a fair degree of mechan ical skill to make and insert a set of artificial teeth. Today the merest tyro can buy a set of gum sections, a piece of rubber, take an impression, and make a so-called set of teeth. But it is sickening to witness the result, as one moves along the street enters the public assembly, or the social circle. Artificial teeth written everywhere. This is the Present. What is to be the Future? It is to be just what an enlight ened, progressive profession shall choose to make it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Times, 1866, Vol. 3: A Quarterly Journal of Dental Science In making a model plate of this substance, the prepared gutta percha may be softened by dry heat, or preferable in water at a temperature above 150° F. The model should be saturated with cold Water, this pre vents the gutta percha from adhering and injuring the face of the model; the softened gutta percha is then pressed down firmly with the fingers, wet with cold water. In arranging blocks or gum teeth, the approximal faces should be fitted accurately, and, when practicable, with a very thin wheel, cut grooves in the base and approximal faces; the rubber flowing into these grooves materially assists the pins in retaining the teeth in their position, and in many cases I rely as much upon the grooves as upon the pins. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The British Journal of Dental Science, 1884, Vol. 27 The extreme importance of the question how crowded dentures should be treated has given rise to much discussion upon the subject, and has occasioned great diversity in the methods adopted in the treatment of these cases. It would be beyond the scope of this paper to enter into the consideration of these methods, so that it must suffice to say that most practical men, While differing materially in their after treatment, yet agree that the extraction of one or more teeth is in most cases obligatory, unless expansion of the arch by mechanical means would suffice without removal of any. Some dentists remove one of the bicuspids in preference to the first molar, and it is in this paper my object to show that the rule is based upon wrong or imperfect data, as I trust the sequel will prove. Crowded dentures are commoner now-a days than was the case formerly, and by removal of one of the bicuspids the irregularity may be rectified by mechanical means for a time, until the eruption of the third molars, when the teeth resume more or less their old position, and so cause a secondary deformity, and it is with a View to avoid the oc currence of these lamentable cases that I have endeavoured to ascertain Whether any initial choice of teeth to be extracted may not achieve the object in view. It may be indicated that the table appended is compiled wholly and solely from cases of persons from hospitals, dispensaries, &c this being impor tant since it is among this class that but few teeth are removed to correct deformities, the patients, as a rule, valuing their teeth more than their appearance. Hence I may say that nearly all these teeth were removed for actual disease. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Independent Practitioner, 1884, Vol. 5: A Monthly Journal Devoted to Dental and Oral Science On examining the mouths Of a class Of children recently admitted to the institution, the teeth present no peculiarities worthy of special notice, except in most cases a lack of cleanliness, and an average amount of caries, not greater than we would expect to find in the mouths of the same number of children where no previous dental care had been given, and where brush and powder were unknown; the tooth structure-is Often quite soft and the decay is largely of the white variety, such as occurs in teeth deficient in min eral constituents. They come to the Institution from the lower walks of life as a rule, their parents in many cases being poor and unable to provide them with proper food and care as a natural result there are many whose dentures are riddled with caries. Pulps exposed, and the teeth 0 apparently melting away. In those whose deafness is acquired through disease, viz.: scarlatina, measles, cerebro-spinal meningitis, the teeth frequently bear evidences of the high febrile conditions through which the patient has passed, by pits in the enamel, crimped edges, defective form, imperfect developement or soft structure. The majority of the pupils are between the age of ten and twelve years. After a years residence in the Institution, during which they are given excellent care in all that relates to their physical welfare, a marked improvement will be observed in the character of their teeth; they will be found exceedingly hard and dense, making the wear and tear on cutting instruments very great. Excavators and chisels have to be tempered to the point of brittleness to be effective in preparing cavities; otherwise they will not cut the extremely hard structure. They are firmly set in their sockets, making them unusually difficult to extract. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
