Book Army Daze

Download or read book Army Daze written by Ron Green, Sr. and published by Gold Leaf Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Army Daze is an entertaining collection of one zany soldier's atypical experiences during his two years as a draftee in the US Army. Stationed in Germany from 1957-1959, author Ron Green wrote this book "to get even with the army ... for giving me two of the best years of my life." But it wasn't luck or charm or timing that inspired Green's lifelong allegiance to the American flag and all it represents; it was the US Army and Green's refreshing perspective on his experiences as a soldier. In effect, Green has done more for positively affecting American's attitude toward the army, the draft and the military overall than any government issued literature ever could.

Book excerpt: "From Boys to Men is the first-ever collection of literary writing about the Singaporean experience of National Service (NS). In a way unique from other aspects of life, NS has spawned a discernible body of work by Singapore's writers. This book collects more than 50 of the best examples of published and new works on this subject by 30 writers, connecting past, present and future ideas and feelings about serving the nation. The works here reveal deeper layers of texture to Singaporean life and how NS strikes a deep chord in national culture. And if it is true that some of the most honest facts are to be found only in fiction, then this collection is all the more important for anyone who wants to understand Singapore." --cover page [4].

Book Military Comedy Films

Download or read book Military Comedy Films written by Hal Erickson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with Charlie Chaplin's Shoulder Arms, released in America near the end of World War I, the military comedy film has been one of Hollywood's most durable genres. This generously illustrated history examines over 225 Army, Navy and Marine-related comedies produced between 1918 and 2009, including the abundance of laughspinners released during World War II in the wake of Abbott and Costello's phenomenally successful Buck Privates (1941), and the many lighthearted service films of the immediate postwar era, among them Mister Roberts (1955) and No Time for Sergeants (1958). Also included are discussions of such subgenres as silent films (The General), military-academy farces (Brother Rat), women in uniform (Private Benjamin), misfits making good (Stripes), anti-war comedies (MASH), and fact-based films (The Men Who Stare at Goats). A closing filmography is included in this richly detailed volume.

Book excerpt: 'My Army Daze by Andrew Wishart', chronicles the impressions of an eighteen year old teenager. He is suddenly propelled from civilian life into the puzzling discipline of a Scottish Infantry Regiment where he serves his compulsory National Service and experiences an abrupt transfer from former Boy Scout to Infantry Soldier during the fading days of the British Empire during the 1950's. I will spare you from my babbling. Here is a recent review. Funny and Serious 6 Feb 2013By John HandlingFormat:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified PurchaseI don't normally read personal accounts but this appealed to me as it was written by an ordinary soldier called up to do his national service as opposed to a self certified all action hero. Andrew has told the story very well. I was both fascinated and in awe of the things he and his comrades had to endure and was really pleased that there was no glorification or embellishment with unrealistic action scenes like most books of this nature. I read it with a smile on my face as he turned it into light-hearted banter even in difficult circumstances. A truly down to earth, realistic account told as it was. Well done Andrew.

In addition it also analyzes the experiences of modernization in such cities, but also in terms of the strategies of containment, refurbishment, and loss which this has occasioned.
