Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New America and the Fast East, Vol. 2 During that period, we have changed from one of the weakest to the most powerful nation on the globe. Fifty years ago, the monarchs who governed what were then the leading nations of the earth established diplomatic relations with scarcely a thought of the young republic on the western shore of the Atlantic. N ow, the powerful nations of the world seek our friendship, and none venture any important diplomacy without first learning whether it will be acceptable to this great republic. Download or read book New America Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by William Hepworth Dixon and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New America, Vol. 1 of 2 Some studies of past times, which have long occupied my pen, led me last summer to the James River and to Plymouth Rock. I went out in search of an old world, and found a new one. East, west, north, and south, I met with new ideas, new purposes, new methods; in short, with a New America. The men who planted these Free States - doing the noblest work that England has achieved in history - were spurred into their course by two great passions; a large love of Liberty; a deep sense of Religion; and, in our Great Plantation, liberty and religion exercise a power over the forms of social and domestic life unknown at home. In the heart of solid societies and conservative churches, we find the most singular doctrines, the most audacious experiments; and it is only after seeing what kind of forces are at work within them, that we can adequately admire the strength of these societies and churches. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Homes of the New World, Vol. 2 of 2: Impressions of America While the savage nations were carrying on cruel wars one with another, and converting all the paths through the forest of the West into paths of death, the Bishop of Quebec, Francis de Laval, was animated by the desire of conveying the doctrines of peace to the shores of the Great River. He desired to go himself; but the lot fell on Rene Mesnard. Every personal consideration seemed to retain him at Quebec, but powerful instincts urged him to risk his life in the enterprise. He was already old when he entered on the path still red with the blood of his prede cessors. In three or four months, wrote he to a friend, on his journey, and you may add my name to those of the dead. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Homes of the New World, Vol. 1 of 2: Impressions of America The only excuse for troubling thee with so long a correspondence is, that if it had not been published in this manner, it would not have been published at all. And my excuse for publishing it at all is, that, for many reasons, I would not abstain from doing so. In placing these letters in thy hand, dear reader, I should wish that thy mind might be favorably disposed toward them, or, at least, might not be in opposition to the spirit in which these letters were first written. They need it more than any thing which I have yet written, because, I can not conceal it from myself, they suffer from - egotism - the offense of all autobiography. This, while it may not offend the sympathetic feelings of a brother or sister, may easily offend the stranger who does not partake in them. Much, therefore, in the letters which referred to myself, and which was personally agreeable to me, has been omitted in their transcription for the press, but not all, otherwise the ingenuous character of the letters must have been sacrificed, together with the peculiar coloring of my life and its circumstances in America. Much remains of that which individually pleased or annoyed me - perhaps more than should have remained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New America Impressions sometimes equal facts and figures as evidence. Now and again they are even more im portant. New feelings have been sweeping America in the past two years, and they are feelings which must leave their effect on people all over the world for a long time to come. No one can doubt that one way or another they will be of towering importance to Britain and the British people. As an English man resident in America during this period I have touched various sides of life and have formed feel ings about the American people in what is probably an historic phase of their development as a nation. The sketches that follow will reveal to Americans the angle of an ordinary Englishman, and to my own people will give perhaps a measure of information.
