Book excerpt: Episodic retrieval is the process of bringing information about a past experience from memory into conscious awareness. Variation in the retrieval process, in regard to content and quality of the information retrieved, is believed to rely on the reactivation of neural patterns of activity elicited during the original experience -- a process called neural reinstatement. Research in support of this idea has relied on participant reports of retrieval quality, but not content, to assess variation in retrieval. Without measuring the content of retrieval, it is unclear whether reinstatement underlies retrieval per se, or merely the evaluation of retrieval quality. The current study addressed this issue by examining the relationship between the magnitude of neural reinstatement during retrieval, and a direct behavioral measure of both retrieval content and quality. Participants viewed a series of words in the context of three encoding tasks, and then completed a memory test on a series of words in which they first identified the encoding task completed for a given word, and next rated their confidence in that decision. Pattern classification analyses were performed on fMRI data acquired during encoding and retrieval phases to index reinstatement, and reinstatement effects were examined according to the behavioral and neural correlates of source confidence. The findings support a relationship between reinstatement and variation in the content and quality of retrieval, and also suggest a role for regions such as left posterior parietal cortex in monitoring reinstated activity to guide decisions about retrieval quality.

Book excerpt: A veridical memory for an episodic event contains multiple pieces of information, which include associations between different items in the environment, temporal information about when different items were experienced, and contextual information such as where the items were experienced. In a series of three experiments presented in this thesis, the subsequent memory procedure was used to investigate the neural correlates of successfully encoding these various types of episodic memory associations. The overarching aim of these studies was to identify neural correlates that indexed encoding operations that led to later successful memory for item-item, item-context, and temporal order information. Although each type of memory association had been investigated on its own in previous studies, the three experiments in this dissertation were the first to investigate the neural correlates of encoding item-item and item-context/temporal order associations within a common study episode. The first two experiments employed fMRI techniques to directly contrast the encoding of item-item and temporal order/item-context associations, respectively. The third experiment employed EEG/ERP techniques to directly contrast the encoding of item-item and item-context associations. Collectively, the findings across the three experiments further our understanding of the neural correlates underlying the memory encoding of different aspects of an experience.

Book excerpt: Judgments of Learning (JOLs) are judgments of the likelihood of remembering recently studied material on a future test. Although JOLs have been extensively studied, particularly due to their important applications in education, relatively little is known about the cognitive and neural processes supporting JOLs and how these processes relate to actual memory processing. Direct access theories describe JOLs as outputs following direct readings of memory traces and hence predict that JOLs cannot be distinguished from objective memory encoding operations. Inferential theories, by contrast, claim JOLs are products of the evaluation of a number of cues, perceived by learners to carry predictive value. This alternative account argues that JOLs are made on the basis of multiple underlying processes, which do not necessarily overlap with memory encoding. In this thesis, the neural and cognitive bases of JOLs were examined in a series of four ERP experiments. Across experiments the study phase ERP data showed that JOLs produce neural activity that is partly overlapping with, but also partly distinct from, the activity that predicts successful memory encoding. Furthermore, the neural correlates of successful memory encoding appear sensitive to the requirements to make a JOL, emphasising the close interaction between subjective and objective measures of memory encoding. Finally, the neural correlates of both JOLs and successful memory encoding were found to vary depending on the nature of the stimulus materials, suggesting that both phenomena are supported by multiple cognitive and neural systems. Although the primary focus was on the study phase ERP data, the thesis also contains two additional chapters reporting the ERP data acquired during the test phases of three of the original experiments. These data, which examined the relative engagements of retrieval processes for low and high JOL items, suggest that encoding processes specifically resulting in later recollection (as opposed to familiarity) form one reliable basis for making JOLs. Overall, the evidence collected in this series of ERP experiments suggests that JOLs are not pure products of objective memory processes, as suggested by direct access theories, but are supported by neural systems that are at least partly distinct from those supporting successful memory encoding. These observations are compatible with inferential theories claiming that JOLs are supported by multiple processes that can be differentially engaged across stimulus contents.

In articulating such a description of the fundamental nature of declarative representation and of the mnemonic capabilities to which it gives rise, the authors' theory constitutes a major extension and elaboration of the earlier procedural-declarative account of memory.Support for this view is taken from a variety of experimental studies of amnesia in humans, nonhuman primates, and rodents. Additional support is drawn from observations concerning the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of the hippocampal system. The data taken from divergent literatures are shown to converge on the central theme of hippocampal involvement in declarative memory across species and across behavioral paradigms.
