Book The Nettleham Gentlemen s Club

Download or read book The Nettleham Gentlemen s Club written by Charles William Johns and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to The Nettleham Gentlemen’s Club, a collection of the bizarre, the inane, and the borderline bonkers. We meet Humpty Dumpty’s fat egg brother, Victor Drake, who inhales gin rickeys and cocktail sausages with the voracity of a starving vacuum cleaner. There’s Clarence Constable, a gentleman with a pathological inability to negotiate a cheese counter, and Charles Bumbridge, an individual with a finely tuned dislike of eggs and who cannot properly deliver his own favourite joke. They are joined by Henry Calming, a dedicated late evening walker (precisely at 10:00 p.m.) who sits by the window, sips his drink, and plays cards. There are nine in all—a collection of odd and idiosyncratic individuals who belong to a club to which, perhaps, no one else wishes to be admitted. Is there some overarching theme to their saga? Perhaps the docile joys of old age and a sagacious acceptance of death/the afterlife? Regardless, it never hurts to read a superbly crafted and odd story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from a wide range of local sources, Sir Francis describes Lincoln as it underwent major change: with the advent of the railways, this ancient cathedral city, hitherto predominantly a market centre, became an industrial city. Sir Francis discusses all aspects of life in the Victorian city, political and municipal reform, the continuing influence of the gentry, the growth of non-confomity and the recovery of Anglicanism, the awakening of the cathedral to new life, and population growth with its attendant social problems - housing, public health and education. Throughout, the author's personal knowledge of the city enables him to give the feel of the period in a fascinating and vivid way. This volume will be of great interest to specialists in nineteenth-century history, and, like the others in the series, to local historians and people who care for the city.

Book Football Family Gender and Identity

Download or read book Football Family Gender and Identity written by Hanya Pielichaty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-12 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a cross-disciplinary examination of the lived experiences of girls and women football players using theoretical insights from sports studies, psychology, sociology and gender studies. It examines the concept of ‘the football self’ – your own, personal football identity that encapsulates the importance of football to our everyday lives – and what that can tell us about the complex relationships between sport, family, gender and identity. The book draws on in-depth ethnographic research involving players and family members, and offers important new insights into the everyday experiences of those girls and women who play. It breaks new ground in focusing on the significant relationships between player and family with a particular focus on parenting through football. The book brings to the fore key debates around gender identity, barriers to participation, cultural gaps and discrimination. The author also brings a personal perspective to bear, drawing on experience gained over 20 years as a player, adding an extra critical layer to her important empirical research. This is essential reading for all researchers and students with an interest in football, sport studies or issues around gender, inclusion or the family in sport, and fascinating reading for anybody generally curious about football.
