Book Association and Auditory Cortices

Download or read book Association and Auditory Cortices written by Alan Peters and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with some of the association areas of the cerebral cortex and with the auditory cortex. In the first chapter, by Deepak Pandya and Edward Yeterian, the general architectural features and connections of cortical associ ation areas are considered; as these authors point out, in primates the association areas take up a considerable portion of the total cortical surface. Indeed, it is the development of the association areas that accounts for the greatest differ ences between the brains of primate and non primate species, and these areas have long been viewed as crucial in the formation of higher cognitive and be havioral functions. In the following chapter, Irving Diamond, David Fitzpatrick, and James Sprague consider the question of whether the functions of the as sociation areas depend on projections from the sensory areas of the cortex. They use the visual cortex to examine this question and show that there is a great deal of difference between species in the amount of dependence, the differences being paralleled by variations in the manner in which the geniculate and pulvinar nuclei of the thalamus project to the striate and extra striate cortical areas. One of the more interesting and perhaps least understood of the association areas is the cingulate cortex, discussed by Brent Vogt. Cingulate cortex has been linked with emotion and with affective responses to pain, and in his chapter Vogt gives an account of its cytoarchitecture, connections, and functions.

Book The eye and brain in macaque and man Linear areal and volumetric dimensions With added miscellaneous data on eye and brain in macaque and man and added dimensional data on eye and brain in non primates

Download or read book The eye and brain in macaque and man Linear areal and volumetric dimensions With added miscellaneous data on eye and brain in macaque and man and added dimensional data on eye and brain in non primates written by ERIK C CORTHOUT and published by ACCO. This book was released on 2014-04-07 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book determines representative values for dimensional parameters of the eye and brain in extant Homo (modern man) and Macaca (Macaca fascicularis, Macaca mulatta and Macaca nemestrina). Indeed, published values in the scientific literature for the dimensions of each of these organs in each of these species differ greatly between studies: mean values published for a single parameter in a single species can differ by a factor of 1.25 for linear dimensions, a factor of 3 for areal dimensions and a factor of 1.5 for volumetric dimensions! This book provides 3 progressive sets of information. First, Elementary Tables provide raw databases: lists of published values. Second, text in Chapters and Addenda provide new insights: critical analysis of these published values and subsequent synthesis of representative values. Third, Chapter Summary Tables and Book Summary Tables provide distilled databases: lists of these representative values. This book is an unprecedented reference work, both because of the large number of published values in its raw databases and because of the well-founded size of the representative values in its distilled databases. This book is a comparative, comprehensive and critical review of published data: comparative as it reviews data for man and macaques; comprehensive as it reviews data in a record number; critical as it reviews data with analysis and synthesis. Anyone can easily consult the 7 Chapter Summary Tables or the 3 Book Summary Tables for concise lists of representative values. Those who require more elaborate information can also consult the 100 pages of Elementary Tables or read the 200 pages of text in Chapters and Addenda. “This remarkable book reports the results of an exhaustive, meticulous and exceedingly thorough review of the complete published literature on the dimensions of eye and brain in three species of macaque monkey and man. Why would anyone be interested in this? The measurements of linear, areal and volumetric dimensions of eye and brain constitute necessary building blocks to derive profound implications for information processing, which is of great interest to a wide variety of scientists. It might appear unbelievable for someone who does not belong to these fields of research, but the reported values differ greatly between studies - sometimes up to a factor 3. This book reports the important values in succinct tables but also provides a critical analysis and synthesis of the literature, which is a substantial contribution to (neuro)anatomy and (neuro)histology in its own right. Sure to stand the test of time, it will be on the shelves of a great many neuroscientists for years to come, and many serious scientists from other disciplines will consult its content when it turns out to be the cornerstone of truly innovative and groundbreaking new theoretical claims on how the brain works. Watch out for more to come by the same author!“ Prof. dr. Johan Wagemans, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, KU Leuven, Belgium “This impressive piece of work provides a very detailed and comprehensive review of various anatomical measures of the eye and the brain of humans and macaque monkeys. It lists what is known about the physical dimensions of eye and brain and - more so - shows how much we still need to learn about these important organs.” Prof. dr. Rufin Vogels, Department of Neurosciences, KU Leuven, Belgium

Book Distribution and Phenotype of Proliferating Cells in the Forebrain of Adult Macaque Monkeys after Transient Global Cerebral Ischemia

Download or read book Distribution and Phenotype of Proliferating Cells in the Forebrain of Adult Macaque Monkeys after Transient Global Cerebral Ischemia written by A.B. Tonchev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-09-02 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors' results show that ischemia differentially activates endogenous neural precursors residing in diverse locations of the adult primate central nervous system. A limited endogenous potential for postischemic neuronal repair exists in neocortex and striatum, but not in the hippocampus proper of the adult macaque monkey brain. The presence of putative parenchymal progenitors and of sustained progenitors in germinative centers opens novel possibilities for precursor cell recruitment.

Book The Prefrontal Cortex Its Structure Function and Pathology

Download or read book The Prefrontal Cortex Its Structure Function and Pathology written by J.P.C. de Bruin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1991-03-05 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to a resurgence of interest and a recent proliferation of research techniques, much new and illuminating data has emerged during the last decade relating to the prefrontal cortex, particularly in primates and rodents. In view of this progress, the 16th International Summer School of Brain Research was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands from 28 August to 1 September 1989, devoted to the topic of `The Prefrontal Cortex: Its Structure, Function and Pathology'.The edited proceedings, embodied in this 85th volume of `Progress in Brain Research', fall into three sections - the first of which, following two introductory chapters, discusses the present knowledge of the organization of prefrontal cortical systems. In the second section, developmental and plasticity aspects in rodent and human cortex are considered, whilst the third section deals extensively with the functional aspects characteristic for the prefrontal cortex in primates, rats and rabbits. The last section reviews several topics on dysfunction of prefrontal cortex in rat and man, including a historical review on psychosurgery.

Download or read book Brain and Human Behavior written by Alexander G. Karczmar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on the Symposium on "The Brain and Human Behavior," held in October of 1969 as a part of the centennial observance of the Loyola Uni versity of Chicago. As President of the University, I was pleased to offer the University's support for the organization of this Symposium and to participate in some of its sessions. The volume which I now have the pleasure to introduce employs the materials of the Symposium as a framework. Its chapters constitute updated and greatly expanded versions of the original presentations, edited and organized so as to constitute an integrated picture of Neurosciences and their epistemological aspects. It seems appropriate for me to describe at this time certain features of this Jesuit University and of its Centennial which are particularly pertinent in the context of the present volume. Loyola University of Chicago opened its classes on September 5, 1870 with a faculty of 4 and a student body of 37. Today, Loyola University is the largest in dependent University in Illinois and the largest institution of higher learning under Catholic sponsorship in the United States of America. The University comprises twelve schools and colleges, a faculty of more than 1,600 and a student body of 16,545. As an institution of learning, this University is dedicated to knowledge; but perhaps more particularly than others, it is dedicated to the integration of truth and the knowledge of man as such.

Book Epilepsy and the Corpus Callosum

Download or read book Epilepsy and the Corpus Callosum written by Alexander G. Reeves and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: InJuly 1982 the first Dartmouth workshop on the corpus callosum took place. A nucleus of basic and clinical scientists was convened to give progress reports of their work on the corpus callosum. This text was subsequently compiled by the various participants from these reports modified by a stimulating cross fertilization of ideas and subsequent studies. Four and one-half decades have intervened since Van Wagenen first sectioned the corpus callosum for epilepsy (Van Wagenen and Herren, 1940) and Erickson (1940) demonstrated that the corpus callosum is the major route for generalization of experimentally induced focal cortical epilepsy. During the succeeding 45 years a handful of clinicians has pursued these leads to confirm the therapeutic value of callosotomy for some types of medically intractable generalized epilepsy. Parallel experimental studies with a number of epilepsy models have indicated that the corpus callosum is indeed the major route for seizure generalization, that the brainstem is a secondary and more resistant pathway for seizure generalization, and that most if not all epileptic seizures originate from the cerbral cortex. The unexpected clinical finding that even partial (focal) seizure incidence is modified by callosotomy now has been demonstrated in the laboratory. The various contributors to the clinical and experimental epilepsy sections of this volume have been seminal in these elucidations, as will be evident from their chapters. The section on the development, anatomy, and physiology of the corpus callosum demonstrates that these basic areas of study have not been neglected.
