Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Necessity of Preserving the Memorials of the Past and of Transmitting to Posterity a Just and Impartial History of North Carolina: An Address Delivered Before the Alumni Association of the University of North Carolina, June 4, 1890, in Memorial Hall at Chapel Hill Remarkable as emanating from such a source; surprising in its exhibition of unfairness, I would not say ignorance, on the subject he was treating. Listen, friends and fellow citizens! In 1755 the Assembly of North Carolina passed an act appropriating 6,000, equal to $150,000 in the money of to-day, for the endowment of a public school for the Province, and resolved "that under a sense of the many advantages that will arise to the Province from giving our youth a liberal education, whether considered in a moral, religious or political light, a public school or seminary of learning be erected and properly endowed, and for effecting the same the sum of 6,000 already appropriated for that purpose be properly applied." But earlier than this. In his will, dated July 5, 1754, Col. James Innes, of the Cape Fear, and at the time Commander-in-chief of the expedition to the Ohio against the "French and their Indians," gave his plantation, Point Pleasant, a considerable personal estate, his library and 100 sterling "for the use of a free school for the benefit of the youth of North Carolina." This bequest, says Col. Saunders, was the first private bequest of the kind in the history of the State. But more remarkable still was the action of the Halifax Congress of November, 1776. This Congress adopted a Constitution and Bill of Rights for the people of North Carolina. It came together on the eve of a great civil war to deliberate upon the most solemn, delicate and difficult of all human undertakings. The time of its meeting was memorable. Rejoicings for the victory of Moore's Creek were still filling the air; the skirmishings at Lexington and Concord and the battle of Bunker's Hill had taken place the April and June of the previous year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Delivered Before the Historical Society of the University of North Carolina, June 6, 1855 Nearly two centuries have elapsed since the mighty spirit of Oliver Cromwell went forth to its last account, to receive its reward according to the deeds done in the body; and yet mankind are almost as far as ever from being agreed as to the true character of that extraordinary person, and as to the nature and value of the influence he exerted on the destinies of our race. Yet, certainly, the events of his life were neither obscure nor ambiguous. His deeds were not done in a corner, but in the face of alarmed and admiring Europe. His speeches were uttered to listening senates, and at the head of armies. His letters have been preserved among the most important state papers of great kingdoms. Yet, with all this glare of light falling upon him, his moral and intellectual proportions seem still vague and indeterminate. By some persons he is regarded not only as a hero of the noblest type, but the purest of patriots, and scarcely less than the most devout of saints. By others, again, he is considered as a coarse, vulgar upstart - possessed, indeed, of uncommon abilities, but who owed his guilty elevation rather to the favor of circumstances, and a remarkable and detestable combination of low cunning with unscrupulous violence, than to any marked superiority in courage or intellect over his contemporaries. The last view has been, until of late, the most generally received. It was the misfortune of Cromwell to belong to a party which must be, on the whole, pronounced illiterate, although John Milton was a member of it. It was his fault or his misfortune that he was at the same time disliked by the Republicans and abhorred by the Royalists; that by the former he was regarded as the supplanter of the liberties of his country - by the latter, as scarcely anything else than an incarnate fiend. Book excerpt: This is a historical document written by the Manumission Society of North Carolina in the early 19th century. The document argues for the abolition of slavery and offers a perspective on the antebellum South and its attitudes towards race. The text is an important artifact of American history, both for its advocacy of abolitionism and its depiction of the social and political climate of the time.
