Against all this we have next to nothing to set except the smart little action in the Heligoland Bight, which was forthwith heralded as a glorious victory. Of course we have captured many helpless German merchantmen, and seized some undefended or weakly defended German colonies, but there is nothing very glorious about that. Altogether, it is a sorry tale of inaction, disappointment, and frequent reverse.' To all these crabbed and cross-grained critics I would reply, 0 yo of little faith, how little you know of the things which belong to your peace! You betray an equal ignorance of naval history and of the nature of naval warfare. Do you think that a fleet, however powerful and confident, can engage the enemy if he will not give it the opportunity? Do you think that any nation can ever go to war without suffering occa sioual disappointments and partial reverses Do you not know that in the Great Revolutionary War, which began in 1793, it was more than a year before the first fleet action was fought by Lord Howe on the glorious first of June 1794 Do you forget that throughout that war, both before Trafalgar and after, British merchant-vessels were captured by the French in hundreds every year, scores of them being snapped up even in the Channel day by day, to the very end of the war? Do you not know that the Seven Years' War, the most successful that England ever fought, began with the loss of Minorca and the trial and death of Byng? The Navy has done nothing, forsooth Why, it has done everything, literally everything; for without it nothing could have been done that has been done) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naval History of the Civil War Since that era the Navy of the United States has been making history for the country on a scale almost bewildering, and could the Old pioneer captains of 1812 have been permitted to look on from their present abode (wherever that may be), we doubt not but that they would have been astonished at the large fleets we were putting afloat with such wonderful rapidity; and they would also have acknowledged that their descend ants had nobly borne themselves in the war for the salvation of this Union, which was as dear to our forefathers as it is to us at the present time. Book The Crisis of the Naval War Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Crisis of the Naval War Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crisis of the Naval War Owing to the peculiar nature and demands of naval warfare, but few dispatches, corresponding to those describing the work and achievements of our great armies, were issued during the progress of the war. In a former volume I attempted to supply this defect in the historical records, which will be available for future generations, so far as the Grand Fleet was concerned, during my period as its Commander-in-Chief. The present volume, which was commenced and nearly completed in 1918, was to have been published at the same time. My departure on a Naval mission early in 1919 prevented me, however, from putting the finishing touches to the manuscript until my return this spring. I hesitated as to the publication of this portion of what is in effect one complete narrative, but eventually decided not to depart from my original purpose. There is some reason to believe that the account of the work of the Grand Fleet gave the nation a fuller conception of the services which the officers and men of that force rendered in circumstances which were necessarily not easily appreciated by landsmen. Download or read book The Navy in the War of the American Revolution Classic Reprint written by James Augustin Greer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy in the War of the American Revolution As soon as the War of the Revolution was fairly entered upon, the subject of a navy engaged the attention of public men, and this was very natural, as the majority of the colonists were descendants of those who owed allegiance to the Mis tress oi the Seas. In October, I776, the Americans (i here use for the first time this distinctive title), had thirteen vessels in course of construction, and ten comparatively large, with several smaller ones in actual service. Early in 1781 all of these, having done more or less good service, had been removed from the list by various causes, mostly disasters. About this time Congress ordered to be built three 74's, five frigates and two smaller vessels. I can find no record of the larger vessels referred to, excepting the America, seventy four guns, a new ship, which was presented to Louis XVI of France in 1782. Private armed vessels, mostly small ones, were fitted out by the Colonies and accomplished, for the opportunities ai forded, effective service. Download or read book A History of the United States Navy Classic Reprint written by John R. Spears and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States Navy IN preparing this volume the writer has been animated by a desire to tell, in one convenient volume, that might be sold at a moderate price, the whole story of our navy - to describe all the important naval battles, and to show how the nation has been affected at certain times by the work of its naval ships, and at other times by the want of such a force. All battles that have had any influence upon the wars in which the nation has been engaged, or upon the evolution of ships of war, or upon the character of our naval men, or of the nation, have been deemed important herein. Any con sideration of the facts shows that our sailors were animated, in most of their battles, by the knowledge that they were fighting for the very life of the nation, and it is therefore not too much to say that a description of such a fight must be a hero story, however told. Frankly, it was in the be lief that every history of our navy claims attention first of all as a hero story that this one was written. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy in the War of 1739-48, Vol. 1 The war which lasted from 1739 to 1748 marks a definite phase in English naval history. The seventeenth century, which in an historical sense may be said to have lasted until the peace of Utrecht, had been a period in which the sea had played a supremely important part. It had been a century in which colonial expansion had held the foremost place in the external policy of England. As the sixteenth century had witnessed the discoveries of the Portuguese and Spaniards, and the acquisition by those powers of vast dominions and trading interests oversea, so the following hundred years had seen Holland, England and France stretching out their arms both in the East and in the West. England had become a truly maritime power on a new scale. She had taken her place as a factor to be reckoned with in the Mediterranean, as a colonial power in the West Indies and America and as a trading power in the Far East, where the first year of the century was marked by the establishment of the East India Company. The eighteenth cen tury inherited the effects of this development, which shewed themselves in a struggle, lasting through a series of wars, to decide whether France or the United Kingdom should finally become the great colonial power. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Navy's Part in the Great War The growth of our Navy to more than half a million Officers and men, manning two thousand vessels, has been almost phenomenal; but no less so than the spirit and efficiency these men have displayed, their courage and enterprise in facing every danger and performing every duty imposed upon them. There has been no more striking instance of sea power than in this war, in which the Allies held control of the seas and, in spite of ruthless submarine warfare and the activity of raiders, at last compelled the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet. It is gratifying that our own Navy had a part in accomplishing this resuAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Navy and the Nation War Time Addresses Classic Reprint written by Josephus Daniels and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy and the Nation War-Time Addresses "Full speed ahead!" has been the signal of the Navy from the moment we entered the war. When the call came, it was ready. The plans had all been prepared in advance, and it required only an order to mobilize the Fleet. Far from breaking down under the war strain, the departmental machinery actually speeded up. No change whatever was required in the organization, which easily expanded to meet the immensely increased demands. From admirals to seamen, from Bureau chiefs to clerks, the entire establishment worked together with the spirit of the corps. This "spirit of the Navy" is a very real thing, as all who are brought in contact with the Service know. Everybody "gets into the game" with a dash and eagerness that are infectious, and new elements are quickly assimilated. The apparent ease with which the vast expansion of the Navy was accomplished has caused many to lose sight of the tremendousness of the task and its difficulty.
