Book Defense Acquisition Fleet Ballistic Missile Program Offers Lessons for Successful Programs

Download or read book Defense Acquisition Fleet Ballistic Missile Program Offers Lessons for Successful Programs written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fleet Ballistic Missile system is the U.S. sea-based deterrent against the Soviet nuclear threat. Nuclear-powered submarines carrying nuclear- tipped Polaris A-1 ballistic missiles began operational patrols in 1960. In March 1990, fourth-generation submarines began operation with sixth-generation Trident II (D-5) missiles. The Navy's Fleet Ballistic Missile program is one of the few major weapon system acquisitions that, over the years, has consistently met or bettered its cost, schedule, and performance goals. GAO was asked to determine (1) what features have contributed to the Fleet Ballistic Missile program's success and (2) whether those features were present in other selected defense acquisition programs. GAO also determined to what extent the six features identified by the Packard Commission as typical of successful commercial programs could be found in the selected defense acquisition programs.

Download or read book From Polaris to Trident written by Graham Spinardi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-01-06 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a complete history of the US Fleet Ballistic Missile programme from its inception in the 1950s and the development of Polaris to the deployment of Trident II in 1990. Writing in an accessible yet scholarly manner, Graham Spinardi bases his historical documentation of FBM development on interviews with many of the key participants. His study confronts a central issue: is technology simply a tool used to achieve the goals of society, or is it an autonomous force in shaping that society? FBM accuracy evolved from the city-busting retaliatory capability of Polaris to the silo-busting 'first strike' potential of Trident. Is this a case of technology 'driving' the arms race, or simply the intended product of political decisions? The book provides a comprehensive survey of the literature looking at the role of technology in the arms race, and seeks to explain technological development using a 'sociology of technology' approach.
