Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature and Purpose of a Christian Society Probably most prefaces are postscripts, and I may say at once that this one is no exception. Some who have seen this lecture in proof have suggested the question, Why should a Lecture given to the Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends lean in this direction? It is all an appeal to the practice of the historic Church, writes one such reader, whereas the Quaker differentia is, for the most part, an appeal against the historic Church, 'the apostasy, ' in fact, to quote George Fox. I pass by the second clause here, and I admit the first, with a qualification; I appeal to the experience of the historic Church, and, if future readers of this lecture wish to know why, I will tell them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Society The church was not sent to be an institu tional dominion, but a sacrificial and redemp tive life in the world. Yet the church is not engaged in sacrifice and redemption, so much as in artificial organization; not engaged in discerning and teaching right from wrong, so much as in definition of doctrines. The anal ogy between Protestant Christendom in rela tion to its mission of social redemption, and the relation of the Jewish church to the first appearance of the Son of God, is true. I am haunted continually with the vision of the liv ing Jesus weeping over our majestic temples of worship, our halls of theology, our conven tions of religion, as though he were again in the sacred sorrow of that weeping over Jerusa lem, his heart again broken because' only the remnant may receive the mission which the institution rejects.but, whatever be the form in which they are destined to be shaped, the work which the Christian societies, as socie ties, have to do, in the days that are to come, is not inferior to any work which has lain before them at any epoch of their history. For the air is charged with thunder, and the times that are coming may be times of storm. There are phe nomena beneath the surface of society of which it would be hardly possible to overrate the significance. There is a widen ing separation of class from class: there is a growing social strain: there is a disturbance of the political equilibrium there is the rise of an educated proletariat. To the problems which these phenomena suggest Christianity has the key. Its unaccomplished mission is to reconstruct society on the basis of brotherhood. To you and me and men like ourselves is committed, in these anxious days, that which is at once an awful responsibility and a splendid destiny - to transform this modern world into a Christian society, to change the socialism which is based on the assumption of clashing interests into the socialism which is based on the sense of spiritual union, and to gather together the scattered forces of a divided Christendom into a confederation in which organization will be of less account than fellowship with one Spirit and faith in one Lord - into a communion wide as human life and deep as human need - into a Church which shall outshine even the golden glory of its dawn by the splendor of its eternal noon. Book Towards a Christian Sociology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Towards a Christian Sociology Classic Reprint written by Arthur Joseph Penty and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Towards a Christian Sociology IF the position be granted that is assumed by nearly all reformers, that the salvation of society involves among other things its reorganisation on some corporate or co-operative basis, there are two ways in which the problem of reconstruction may be approached. The first of these is the Christian one which, taking its stand on the permanent needs of human nature, assumes the existence of a type of society which may be designated as the normal, because it most perfectly satisfies human needs, and therefore directs its policy towards the recovery and strengthening of everything in life and society that is to be regarded as normal. The other, which is the Socialist one, is altogether destitute of any conception of normality, since, apart from the elementary needs of food, Clothing, and shelter, it treats other human needs as non-essentials, subject to Change and flux. It takes its stand on the supposed truth of a theory of social evolution according to which all social phenomena are to be regarded as relative, and human. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethical Christianity: A Series of Sermons Christianity aims at producing a particular kind of life upon earth, and it declares the only way in which that particular kind of life can be realized. What that kind of life is I have tried to explain in this volume. I do not believe that there is any honest agnostic or unbeliever in the world who would object to the sort of conduct which is exemplified and advocated in these sermons. All the noblest unbelievers have now accepted the ethical teaching of Christ as the highest and best. We are agreed with respect to the practical result at which we ought to aim. Now, can that practical result be achieved on a large scale in any way except in the Christian way? We appeal to the tribunal of history and declare that Christ like men and women can be produced only by Christ and He Himself can produce them only by entering into living union with such men and women as are willing to receive the Christ-like life from Him. Therefore we Christians all agree with Bishop Lightfoot in the strong statement that the core of the Gospel does not lie in the moral teaching and the moral example of our Lord. Its distinctive character is, that in revealing a Person it reveals also a principle of life - the union with God in Christ, apprehended by faith in the present and assured to us hereafter by the Resurrection. Nevertheless, it is of great importance that all men should clearly understand what is the nature Of that Ethical Christianity which is the direct and inevitable fruit of vital union with Jesus Christ. What that Ethical Christianity is, this volume tries to explain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. To often we sing and pray for such a life without being willing to undergo the necessary life changes and adjustments to get there. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. George Fox was one Of this description: and being early in life awakened to see the sinful state Of the world, had many serious considerations excited in his mind; these he cherished, and was gradually bi'ought to un derstand the nature and design Of the Gospel dispensation. Download or read book A Defence of the Christian Doctrines of the Society of Friends written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Defence of the Christian Doctrines of the Society of Friends: Being a Reply to the Charge of Denying the Three That Bear Record in Heaven It is certainly not consistent with fair dealing, to pass over the many plain and clear declarations of faith, which the Society of Friends have at different times published, with the false assertion that they rejected all creeds and confessions of faith; and to cull from their controversial writings, mutilated sentences, and publish them as exhibiting the true doctrines of the society. Controversial writings are more generally written to refute and expose the errors of an opponent, than fully to set forth the belief of the writer. There are some observations in a reply to the Snake in the Grass, which are so peculiarly applicable to the compilers of the pamphlet, that we shall quote them. They are inserted in Gough's History.
