The main motives behind this was Communal harmony, Stand against untouchability, Prohibition, Khadi and Gramodyog (Village Industries), Village Cleanliness drives, Nai Talim, Adult Education, Inclusion of Womenfolk into the mainstream, Health & hygiene, Development of vernacular language, Stress on National language, Stress on Economic Equality, Political awakening of the peasants, Establishment of ideal labour unions, Service to the lepers, Service to Adivasis, Prohibition of toddy, Ban on illicit liquor and etc. Modern archtitutere of odisha played an important under the leadership Gandhiji. It was primarily organized around the promotion of Khadi spinning and village industries, national education and Hindu-Muslim unity, struggle against untouchability and social uplift of the Harijans and boycott of foreign cloth and liquor. Above all, it meant going to villages and identifying with villagers. Constructive work was symplized by hundreds of ashrams which came up all over the country, almost entirely in the villages and in which social and political workers got practical training in production of Khadi and yarn and in work among lower castes and tribal people.

It may be debated, however, whether the Gurus' disciples are generally aware of how the Panthic message has been transmitted and perceived over the centuries in this part of the country. Their comparative lack of enthusiasm man be partly due to the bulky nature of these sources as well as the difficulty of having them together in a public library or any single private collection. These materials are in regional languages and carry a distinct local flavour, differing significantly from those of the manjha-malwa-doaba watershed. They suggest not only the spirit of plurality in Indian cultural traditions, but also Sikhism's intimate link with it. Their identification and appreciation is likely to enrich our understanding of Sikhism in the wider context of the Indian unity and diversity. The present study seeks to deal with some of these interesting issues recorded in three eastern Indian languages, namely, Assamese, Bengali and Oriya published over a century between the First Sikh War (1845) and the Partition of India (1947). In the process it outlines the history of the Sikhs and reveals how the message of Sikhism has been perceived in the context of different local issues by numerous eastern Indian authors.

Borders have not disappeared – not even in a unified and predominantly peaceful Europe – but rather they have changed, become more varied and, in a certain sense, mobile, taking on an important role in the everyday lives of more people than ever before. Furthermore, it is now widely accepted that borders do not just hinder communication and the formation of relationships, but also channel and prefigure them in a positive way. Presenting a number of studies of everyday life in European borderlands, this book addresses the multifarious and complex ways in which borders function as both barriers and bridges. Focusing on ‘established’ Western European borderlands – with the exception of three contrasting cases – the book attempts a turn from conflict to harmony in the study of borderlands and thus examines the more mundane manifestations of border life and the complex, often unconscious motives of everyday cross-border practices. The collection of chapters demonstrates that even in the case of ‘open’ political borders, the border remains an enduring factor that is not adequately described as either a problematic barrier or a desirable bridge. The studies look at bordering processes, not only approaching them from different disciplinary angles – sociology, anthropology, geography, history, political science and literary studies – but also choosing different scales and making comparisons that range from different borders of one country to the reactions and attitudes of different individuals in a single borderland village.
