This book was released on 1979 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the REAPS Technical Symposium. Paper No. 16: AUTOKON-76/79-An Affordable Implementation on Prime Minicomputers. The version that is about to be implemented on the PRIME mini computer is basically AUTOKON-79 which may be defined as AUTOKON-79 with some improvements as well as several major new features. The very rapid development of the computer industry with steadily falling prices have changed the outlook with respect to computers and their uses. It is presently feasible to use inhouse computers even for very small operations to run the entire AUTOKON system with its present capabilities as well as the developments that are about to be implemented. The traditional way of processing in a batch made with a waiting time for turnaround have given way to an interactive mode of processing where results come much sooner. Gone are also keypunching, job submission, etc. No longer is it necessary to have large number of pages printed out. Output can be examined by means of an editor, i.e. a system program enabling the user to go through print files as well as other files.

This book was released on 1976 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid 1960's the Computer Aided Ship Design and Construction project office, located in the Naval Ship Engineering Center, was chartered to apply computer aiding techniques to all phases of the naval shipbuilding process. After the aerospace industry's success in developing a productive wiring data system and an in-depth NAVSEC sponsored study at three designated naval shipyards of the cabling/wiring flow process during installation design, it was determined that a similar system should be developed for naval ship design and production. Because there are significant differences between wiring an aircraft and wiring a ship, a direct conversion from one application to the other was ruled out. In 1965 the Westinghouse Electric Corporation was selected to develop a system of computer programs for processing the flow of electrical and electronic cabling/wiring information used in ship construction. This system was to address the entire process of installation design of equipment on board any Navy ship. This included, such functions as cable routing, hanger selection, penetration design, planning and estimating supporting documents and the equivalent of all the necessary wiring plans. The C/W System is now being implemented at Norfolk and Long Beach and is scheduled for implementation in the other naval shipyards. This system is the first of what the author hopes will be a large number of computer aided ship design and construction programs to be developed and implemented by the Naval Sea Systems Command. It is expected that by applying these systems deliberately and diligently in an integrated shipyard modernization program, the total benefits of electronic data processing can be obtained, thus producing a better ship faster and at a lower cost.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The planning environment in American shipyards has undergone a change[of technique and attitude with the upswing in use of computers. Traditional planning mechanisms have given way to PERT networks and sophisticated data collection and reporting computer systems. This transition has not been as successful as was intended as evidenced by the planning and scheduling problems faced by many of these computerized yards. Data processing was moved from the basic accounting arena into operations research and massive production-oriented systems which has diluted the planning effort. This is caused by planners which have not evolved from production, a planning attitude that the computer can solve all problems. and management's inability to recognize the shortcomings of computer software. Technology is available to assist the shipyard with total planning and complete ship's plans and schedules. However planning. in itself, must be adapted to use this computer technology and not be driven by it.

Book The National Shipbuilding Research Program Proceedings of the REAPS Technical Symposium Paper No 15 Present and Future AUTOKON

Download or read book The National Shipbuilding Research Program Proceedings of the REAPS Technical Symposium Paper No 15 Present and Future AUTOKON written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total design and production of a new product is particularly a problem for large projects, for example special purpose ships and offshore structures, where a close co-operation and control is demanded by owners, classification societies and officials in general. In today's situation, lacking as it is in new orders, the builder is often forced by the terms of the contract to spend only a very short period of time on design activities. Shortening the leadtime for design and work preparation is as very important for the ability of a company to compete. Preferably this shortening of lead- time must not induce extra costs or be at the expense of product quality. Based on our experiences in the use of EDP as well as our plans for further development, we will focus on what has been done and what may still be done to strengthen our competitiveness in this area.

Download or read book The National Shipbuilding Research Program Proceedings of the REAPS Technical Symposium Paper No 2 The New REAPS Program for U S Shipbuilders written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this discussion is to introduce a new version of the REAPS Program. In 1971 a Maritime Administration (MarAd) Advisory Group recognized a void in the area of computer aided shipbuilding. In response, MarAd acquired rights to the AUTOKON-71 system, the most widely used system in Europe. MarAd and the participating shipyards recognized the need to provide maintenance and support for the AUTOKON system. That effort was sponsored and paid for jointly by the industrial users and the government. It soon became apparent to all concerned that there was much more to be gained from computer applications in the shipyard than just running the AUTOKON system. A total shipyard program for computer automation beyond AUTOKON was needed. It was this decision that gave birth to the Research and Engineering for Automation and Productivity in Shipbuilding (REAPS) program; a joint participation program involving five shipyards, MarAd, and IITRI. Its purpose was to identify and address common problems in ship construction. The advantages were obvious. Participants could pool both the technological know how in identifying and solving problems and their resources to solve a common problem only once not repetitively at every shipyard. The REAPS program, a new concept in cooperative developments among several shipyards, was working. One thing began to change--the objectives of our development projects. Originally, they were oriented to a specific computer system, AUTOKON; now they were becoming non-system oriented, standalone modules with no relationship to a specific computer system or software package. A new concept was needed. The "new" REAPS program as it has evolved to date is a non-systems oriented program with the separation of all AUTOKON related activities. The overall concept of the new REAPS Program consists of five basic elements: Advance Planning, Technology Assessment, Development Program, Technology Information Services and Discretionary Development.

Download or read book The National Shipbuilding Research Program Proceedings of the REAPS Technical Symposium Paper No 26 Computer Assisted Process Planning A First Step Toward Integration written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer assisted process planning can be a first step toward the integrated use of computers in the design and manufacturing process to improve productivity in batch manufacturing. The key to the process of integration is a part feature recognition method to analyze and retrieve manufacturing processes and arrive at least-cost designs consistently linked to "best" manufacturing processes. Major problems are incompatible computers, software; and people.

Book The National Shipbuilding Research Program Proceedings of the REAPS Technical Symposium Paper No 23 A Practical Approach to Using Standard Software Packages in Small Shipyards

Download or read book The National Shipbuilding Research Program Proceedings of the REAPS Technical Symposium Paper No 23 A Practical Approach to Using Standard Software Packages in Small Shipyards written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the growth of a shipbuilding concern, a time arrives when manual efforts to control cost and report status become undesirable. However, when an attempt is made to apply readily available software, many obstacles are presented. One approach to avoid many of these obstacles is addressed. By describing vessel construction through a network of dated work orders, and the treating of this network as a structured bill of material, standard software packages can be used to manipulate the data necessary to provide material requirements planning and job cost accounting. Critical issues impacting the selection and successful implementation of computerized systems are also discussed.
