Book The National Aerospace Plane NASP

Download or read book The National Aerospace Plane NASP written by B. W. Augenstein and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Aerospace Plane (NASP) program plans were to develop an experimental aircraft, the X-30, to explore the entire hypersonic velocity flight range. The program's objectives included support of future national security, civil applications, and a reduction in the costs of space launch. This Executive Summary provides an independent assessment of the NASP program. The report discusses a number of features that should be included in demonstration programs with the goal of proving that relevant technologies are sufficiently mature to support the development of vehicles capable of hypersonic missions over a range of flight goals, including, but not restricted to, the special X-30 case as originally proposed (single stage to orbit, very major reliance on multicycle air heating engines.) This Executive Summary includes a review of the early NASP program, from which the authors draw several conclusions concerning NASP, then presents a comparative assessment of NASP's role in the military, and a discussion of missions. This is followed by discussion of critical considerations in technology, prudent risk management, cost estimates, and programmatic issues.

Book National Aerospace Plane Program

Download or read book National Aerospace Plane Program written by Scott Pace and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper outlines key issues raised by the National AeroSpace Plane Program (NASP) and suggests policy options to be examined further. The need for routine space access and U.S. aeronautical leadership makes NASP a national priority. The costs and uncertainties of NASP, however, necessitate reducing its risks. The author raises the following points: (1) the rate of technical progress, cost projections, and potential applications of NASP technology are uncertain; (2) NASP development costs and possible increases may force tradeoffs with other research and development in subsonic aircraft and launch vehicle technology; and (3) the 1988-1989 fiscal year budget will require decisions on major funding increases for flying "technology demonstrators." The author suggests some policy options to be examined: (1) maintain NASP research efforts, but deemphasize operational applications; (2) hedge NASP research by expanding efforts in other space and aeronautical transport programs; and (3) increase National Aeronautics and Space Administration responsibility for NASP work and ease classification restrictions."--Rand abstracts.

Book Future Spacecraft Propulsion Systems and Integration

Download or read book Future Spacecraft Propulsion Systems and Integration written by Paul A. Czysz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The updated and expanded third edition of this book focuses on the multi-disciplinary coupling between flight-vehicle hardware alternatives and enabling propulsion systems. It discusses how to match near-term and far-term aerospace vehicles to missions and provides a comprehensive overview of the subject, directly contributing to the next-generation space infrastructure, from space tourism to space exploration. This holistic treatment defines a mission portfolio addressing near-term to long-term space transportation needs covering sub-orbital, orbital and escape flight profiles. In this context, a vehicle configuration classification is introduced covering alternatives starting from the dawn of space access. A best-practice parametric sizing approach is introduced to correctly design the flight vehicle for the mission. This technique balances required mission with the available vehicle solution space and is an essential capability sought after by technology forecasters and strategic planners alike.

Book The Highways of Air and Outer Space Over Asia

Download or read book The Highways of Air and Outer Space Over Asia written by Chia-Jui Cheng and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineties will be a turning point for international air transport and for space activities. Trends in civil aviation and outer space policies show the need to join forces to promote common interests, leading to the strengthening of the 'region' as a basis of co-operation. As international air transport benefits from progressive liberalization at the same time ever greater regional co-operation between governments as well as between airlines is emerging. The European Communities offer a most interesting example of both trends, provoking similar initiatives in other areas of the world, among them East Asia. With respect to commercial space activities, more especially those in the field of space transportation, a similar need for regional and even world-wide co-operation is arising. In order to contribute to the promotion of a balanced regional approach in both civil aviation and outer space activities, the Graduate Institute of European Studies at Tamkang University and the International Institute of Air and Space Law at Leiden University organized a major international conference, entitled The Highways of Air and Outer Space Over Asia, in May 1991. The present work is the result of that conference. It is a collection of articles by the most qualified academics and practitioners from Asia, North America and Europe, covering topical subjects in the field of international civil aviation and outer space activities such as regulatory reform, aviation safety and security, liability in international air transport, the future Euro-Asian aviation relationship, the commercialization of outer space and cooperation between Europe and Asia with respect to outer space activities with special emphasis on the relationships between Asia on the one hand and Europe and the United States on the other.
