Download or read book Conservatism among the Iroquois at the Six Nations Reserve written by Annemarie Anrod Shimony and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1994-07-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annemarie Anrod Shimony's classic work clearly shows the contemporary cultural and religious crises that face the Longhouse Iroquois at the Six Nations Reserve, Ontario. Shimony presents a lucid and eloquent account of the survival of the Native American tradition, which is struggling to maintain political and cultural autonomy in an ever-changing modern world. Based on original field work dating from 1953 to 1961, and supplemented by new material describing changes during the last thirty years, Shimony's work is once again the most comprehensive ethnography of the largest extant traditional Iroquoian community. Some of the material discussed includes the social organization, the system of hereditary chiefs, the beliefs and practices of the Longhouse religion, the events of the Iroquoian life cycle, and the extensive medicinal and witchcraft aspects of the culture. Additional areas of focus include the rituals of the agricultural calendar and Iroquois conceptions of death and burial rituals. As Elizabeth Tooker wrote in Indians of the Northeast, Shimony's monograph is, "next to Morgan's League, the most important general description of the Iroquois." With its new material added, Conservatism among the Iroquois is once again required reading for anyone interested in Native American culture.

Download or read book Honor the Earth written by Phil Bellfy and published by Ziibi Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes Basin is under severe ecological threat from fracking, bursting pipelines, sulfide mining, abandonment of government environmental regulation, invasive species, warming and lowering of the lakes, etc. This book presents essays on Traditional Knowledge, Indigenous Responsibility, and how Indigenous people, governments, and NGOs are responding to the environmental degradation which threatens the Great Lakes. This volume grew out of a conference that was held on the campus of Michigan State University on Earth Day, 2007. All of the essays have been updated and revised for this book. Among the presenters were Ward Churchill (author and activist), Joyce Tekahnawiiaks King (Director, Akwesasne Justice Department), Frank Ettawageshik, (Executive Director of the United Tribes of Michigan), Aaron Payment (Chair of the Sault Sainte Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians), and Dean Sayers (Chief of the Batchewana First Nation). Winona LaDuke (author, activist, twice Green Party VP candidate) also contributed to this volume. Adapted from the Introduction by Dr. Phil Bellfy: "The elements of the relationship that the Great Lakes' ancient peoples had with their environment, developed over the millennia, was based on respect for the natural landscape, pure and simple. The "original people" of this area not only maintained their lives, they thrived within the natural boundaries established by their relationship with the natural world. In today's vocabulary, it may be something as simple as an understanding that if human beings take care of the environment, the environment will take care of them. The entire relationship can be summarized as "harmony and balance, based on respect."

Download or read book Tuscarora written by Anthony F. C. Wallace and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tuscarora is the comprehensive history of the small Iroquois Indian reservation community just north of Niagara Falls in western New York. The Tuscaroras consider themselves to be a sovereign nation, independent of the United States and the State of New York. They have preserved a system of social organization and ideal public values, along with the Tonawanda Seneca and the Onondagas that retains matrilineal clans, and a Council of Chiefs nominated by the clan matrons. Over the course of their existence, however, the Tuscarora have faced many struggles. Stemming from over sixty years of research, Anthony F. C. Wallace follows their story of overcoming war and loss of population, migration from North Carolina in the 1700s, the emotional trauma and social disorders resulting from discrimination and abusive conditions in residential boarding schools, and successful adaption to urban industrial society. Wallace weaves together historical detail, ethnography, and his own personal reflections to offer a unique and sweeping look at this fascinating group of people.
Download or read book Selahattin lk men the Turkish Righteous among the Nations written by Yücel Güçlü and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-04-08 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Holocaust is far from complete. Even with more than seven decades of Holocaust research and writing behind us, there are many specialist topics within Holocaust historiography that have not been dealt with in detail, including the role of Turkey. This has caused the researchers of the Holocaust in other countries to often include limited, outdated, and sometimes incorrect data about Turkey in their studies. Within the flood of publications on Holocaust history that has been rising since the 1990s, and which has maintained its momentum ever since, studies on the role of Turkey remain comparatively underexplored. Selahattin Ülkümen, a Turk, is the only Muslim diplomat who thus far has been designated as “Righteous among the Nations” by the Yad Vashem (the Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Authority) in Jerusalem for saving, at his own risk, the lives of 42 Jews in Rhodes from the Nazis in 1944. Thus momentarily thrust into prominence, he excites a certain curiosity. However, current scholarship has failed to reveal a single monograph or even an article in periodical literature on him. Neither Turk nor Westerner has devoted more than a few pages to his exploits. References to him in other sources are slight and fall short of explaining a satisfactory explanation of his deeds. The remarkable story of Ülkümen is an important but little-known aspect of Turkish history in the Second World War period. He is an individual who has not received the attention he deserves. This book serves to fill this historiographical void. It draws on the previously unused files of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Yad Vashem Archives, and available primary and secondary sources in Turkish, English, and French.
