Book excerpt: There have been many books written about the Vietnam War and many were put on the big screen. Many of these films were very inaccurate about the story they told and people were left with untruths about the men and women who were over there in the thick of things. Many thought us as being mentally disturbed, not able to cope with reality, psychotic killers and baby killers. Many of the books written depicted too much gore and bloodshed and all the craziness that comes with it. I also was spit upon and called names by our own people when I returned home. I wanted to write a book about my tour in Vietnam with the Marines but I wanted to do this from the eyes of a medical person who was there strictly to save lives and patch up the wounded. The Vietnam War was a very controversial war that caused this country major turmoil in all of its cities. My book doesn't answer any one question but what it does do is give the public an eye view of what the military man and woman saw when they were there in a combat situation. The amount of emotional and physical stress that the jungles of Nam felt like, was like nothing any of us had ever been through before. No war tested the inner strength and physical endurance as the Vietnam War. War is a terrible thing, something that is not totally understood. Why do we do things that are a little out of the norm? What makes a person become so distraught that they turn to atrocity and lacking of any remorse? I hope you see and feel the horrors of war in this book. I especially hope you see the Vietnam vet in a different light.

Unfortunately, even in the best of causes there are those who misuse those who serve Without Question to further their own gain. This is a tale of men who believe in their service and serve with noble honor.

After attempts at exploring the Mekong River, the French turned their sights to the Red River. Only after Jean Dupuis successfully linked Hanoi with Yunnan was Admiral Dupre able to begin the conquest of Tonking. This volume begins where Chapuis's History of Vietnam left off, completing the colonial history of Vietnam. The decline of French authority in Indochina began with Japanese demands and subsequent occupation during World War II. The 9 March 1945 Japanese coup would mark the beginning of the end of French supremacy; however, French authorities would return with troops to confront the Vietnamese demands for unity and independence after Japan's defeat. Although an agreement between Sainteny and Ho Chi Minh would allow the French army to land in North Vietnam, the creation of the southern Republic of Cochin-China would be a move that ran counter to Vietnamese nationalist sentiment. Nine years later, the French found themselves ousted from their former colony.

Fresh from sock hops and college freshman mixers, young men found themselves in a fight for their lives, from the Delta to the DMZ, on animal trails, numbered hills and in remote jungle outposts. Teenagers witnessed the unspeakable carnage of war while trying to understand the collision of emotions and insult to the senses that is combat. Thousands died there and many thousands more were wounded and maimed. So the hell of combat was replaced by the painful recovery in a military hospital. For me and thousands of others it was Great Lakes Naval Hospital at Great Lakes, Illinois. For Self and Country follows my many months of recovery along with the stories of the brave young men who surrounded me and sustained me with friendship, uncommon humor, and courage. This is a story of family, young love, and the magnificent care administered by the Navy doctors, nurses and revered Corpsmen. Great Lakes was a place of great pain but also recovery, not just from the physical damage we sustained but also the unseen emotional injuries everyone endured but rarely talked about. We helped each other in our recovery by talking to each other about our wartime experiences and how we would need to cope outside the insulated and protected hospital. Most of us had no expectation of surviving Vietnam; now that we had we were unsure what place we would have in civilian life.
