Download or read book The Mystery of Life Classic Reprint written by John Ruskin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystery of Life Titian, we may see the colours of things with deeper truth than in the most dazzling sunshine. And because these truths about the works of men, which I want to bring to-day before you, are most of them sad ones, though at the same time helpful and because also I believe that your kind Irish hearts will answer more gladly to the truthful ex pression of a personal feeling, than to the exposition of an abstract principle, I will permit myself so much unreserved speaking of my own causes of regret, as may enable you to make just allowance for what, according to your sym pathies, you will call either the bitterness, or the insight, of a mind which has surrendered its best hopes, and been foiled in its favourite aims. Book The Great Mystery of Life Beyond Death Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Great Mystery of Life Beyond Death Classic Reprint written by Arthur Conan Doyle and published by . This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Mystery of Life Beyond DeathBut this, as Sir Arthur explains, is not in any way strange. He was not writing, but orally dictating without being able to look over the sentences so dictated; sometimes he did ask me to read out what 1 had written to enable him to pick up the lost thread. The dictation was besides by the conveyance of impressions of thoughts in Words to the two young men, being thus restricted by the capacities of Sir Arthur to convey and of Ashok and Subodh to receive the correct impressions and spell them out on the Board. In this process of filtering through the minds of the two instru ments, Sir Arthur holds and rightly too, the style gets naturally altered completely. The logic, systematic presentation, analytical ability and experienced exposition, however, clearly reveal a master-writer and trained author, for evidently the two young gentle men could not possibly, at their age and stage of education, be regarded as capable of producing, in this mysterious joint fashion, a book like this on a subject, on which their minds were a perfect blank. Besides, their obvious reluctance to carry on the work till completion clearly indicates that the thoughts, ideas and explanations emanated from an outside intelligence, we three having nothing to do with these.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystery of Life: A Study of Revelation in the Light of Science What is life? Or rather how does it manifest itself? For it is much to be feared that life will never be satisfactorily defined. Indeed this may be said about all the forces of the uni verse. What they are will doubtless always remain among the inscrutable things Of the infinite unknown. Man knows that light casts shadows, enables the eye to perceive Objects, develops the green in plants, produces vigor in animals, affects the photographic plate, and travels through space; it takes no philosopher to say whether it is light or dark, but not even the greatest philoso'pher is able to say with certainty what light is. And so with heat, electricity and other forces of nature. Something is known Of their effects, but little of them. They are all like the wind, of which we hear the sound, but whence it cometh or whither it goeth we know not. We know what forces do, but not what they are. With whisper weak and faint it came to me, Like feeble glimmer of the struggling moon To wildered mariner on midnight sea With whisper weak at first, but strengthening soon, Like the moon's beam when filmy clouds disperse, And through my scattered doubts, with quiet tune, Uttering in clear, apocalyptic verse, Truth, which for comfort and monition sent, E'en as the Voice revealed, do I rehearse. Book Hey Rub a Dub Dub

Download or read book Hey Rub a Dub Dub written by Theodore Dreiser and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hey Rub-a-Dub-Dub: A Book of the Mystery and Wonder and Terror of Life I Have lived now to my fortieth year, and have seen a good deal of life. Just now, because of a stretch of poverty, I am living across the river from New York, in New Jersey, in sight of a splendid tower, the Woolworth Building on the lower end of Manhattan, which lifts its defiant spear of clay into the very maw of heaven. And although I am by no means as far from it as is Fifth Avenue, still I am a dweller in one of the shabbiest, most forlorn neighborhoods which the great metropolis affords. About me dwell principally Poles and Hungarians, who palaver in a lingo of which I know nothing and who live as I would despise to live, poor as I am. For, after all, in my hall-bedroom, which commands the river over the lumberyard, there is some attempt at intellectual adornment, whereas outside and around me there is little more than dull and to a certain extent aggrieved drudgery. Not so very far from me is a church, a great yellow structure which lifts its walls out of a ruck of cheap frame houses, and those muddy, unpaved streets which are the pride of Jersey City and Hoboken. Here, if I will, I can hear splendid masses intoned, see bright altars and stained glass windows and people going to confession and burning votive candles before images. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystery of Being, Vol. 1: Reflection and Mystery It might be said in the first place that a road implies space; and that the notion of space is something from which a meta physical investigation, as such, must abstract. One must make thesimple answer that if my metaphor must be rejected on this count, so must every kind of discursive thinking; for it is all too evident that the notion of discursiveness implies, and rests on, a simple physical image like that of walking along a road. Moreover, we shall later on have occasion to recognize the existence and philosophical rights of a sort of spatiality which might be called the spatiality of inner experience; and it may be that this spatiality of inner experience is coextensive with the whole spiritual life. But the objection may be put in another way, which has a dangerous look of being much more genuinely awkward. To lay down a road in a place where at first there were only tracks, is that not equivalent to fixing in advance a certain destination at which one intends to arrive, and must not that destination, itself, be very exactly located? The underlying image would be that of a grotto, a mine, or a sanctuary whose whereabouts one knew in advance. It would be a matter of showing the way there to those who for one reason or another wanted to have a look at the place, no doubt in order to profit from its riches. But does not this presuppose that the result we are working for has already been achieved, even before we start working for it: does it not pre suppose a preliminary or original discovery of the grotto or the sanctuary? Well, looking at the matter in my own way, I must ask whether, in the realm of philosophy, we can really talk about results? Is not all such talk based on a misunderstanding of the specific character of a philosophical investigation, as such? The question raised here at least obliges us to come to much closer grips with the very notion of a result. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystery of Metropolisville A novel should be the truest of books. It partakes in a certain sense of the nature of both history and art. It needs to be true to human nature in its permanent and essential qualities, and it should truthfully represent some specific and temporary manifestation of human nature: that is, some form of society. It has been objected that I have Oopied life too closely, but it seems to me that the work to be done just now, is to represent the forms and spirit of our own life, and thus free ourselves from habitual imitation of that Which is foreign. I have Wished to make my stories of value as a con tribution to the history Of civilization in America. If it be urged that this is not the highest function, I reply that it is just now the most necessary function of this kind of literature. Of the value of these stories as works of art, others must judge; but I shall have the satisfaction of knowing that I have at least rendered one substantial though humble service to our literature, if I have portrayed correctly certain forms of.
