Book The Oxford Handbook of Sacramental Theology

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Sacramental Theology written by Hans Boersma and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a multi-faceted introduction to sacramental theology, the purposes of this Handbook are threefold: historical, ecumenical, and missional. The forty-four chapters are organized into the following parts five parts: Sacramental Roots in Scripture, Patristic Sacramental Theology, Medieval Sacramental Theology, From the Reformation through Today, and Philosophical and Theological Issues in Sacramental Doctrine. Contributors to this Handbook explain the diverse ways that believers have construed the sacraments, both in inspired Scripture and in the history of the Church's practice. In Scripture and the early Church, Orthodox, Protestants, and Catholics all find evidence that the first Christian communities celebrated and taught about the sacraments in a manner that Orthodox, Protestants, and Catholics today affirm as the foundation of their own faith and practice. Thus, for those who want to understand what has been taught about the sacraments in Scripture and across the generations by the major thinkers of the various Christian traditions, this Handbook provides an introduction. As the divisions in Christian sacramental understanding and practice are certainly evident in this Handbook, it is not thereby without ecumenical and missional value. This book evidences that the story of the Christian sacraments is, despite divisions in interpretation and practice, one of tremendous hope.

Book Did the Saviour See the Father

Download or read book Did the Saviour See the Father written by Simon Francis Gaine and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Jesus enjoy the beatific vision of God on earth that Christians hope to enjoy only in heaven? This important question is related to a whole series of questions about Jesus, his knowledge and self-consciousness. Did he know he was God's Son? What did he know of his saving mission? These issues are linked to a fundamental question: Is the Saviour we need one who is altogether like us or one who is in some ways unlike us? This book argues that God gave us a Saviour with beatific knowledge, and who in this respect is very unlike us indeed. The answer commonly given by Catholic theologians to this question underwent a dramatic shift in the middle of the 20th century. Previously there had been a general unanimity based on the teaching of Thomas Aquinas that the answer was 'Yes': the earthly Christ did indeed possess heavenly knowledge. The theological situation was then radically altered to one where the answer 'No' became predominant. Theologians preferred to treat Christ's knowledge in terms of self-consciousness, ordinary human knowing, faith, prophecy and mysticism, not the beatific vision. This book addresses the reasons why theologians abandoned Aquinas's thesis, arguing it has been too easily dismissed. Considering the evidence of Scripture and Tradition, and then moving from Christ's extraordinary knowledge through his ordinary knowledge, to his will, emotions and bodily life, the book sketches an outline of the extraordinary Saviour God has in fact given us and who is indeed the Saviour humanity truly needs.

Book The Mystical Meaning of the Ceremonies of the Mass

Download or read book The Mystical Meaning of the Ceremonies of the Mass written by Jean-Jacques Olier and published by Angelico Press. This book was released on 2024-09-18 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Olier's The Mystical Meaning of the Ceremonies of the Mass, first published in 1657, and presented here with an Introduction by Abbé Claude Barthe, is an outstanding example of the application-to the liturgy and its actions-of the search for a deeper meaning that has also been so influential throughout the history of contemplative Christianity in the resonant, anagogical reading of the Bible. Olier shows us that there is nothing in the traditional Catholic Mass that lacks its own progressively deeper levels of meaning, and that for this reason cannot inspire in us new spiritual insights: new "visions of heaven." Olier writes as eloquently as he spoke; the flow of his eloquence carries us with him as he brings to light many a sparkling gem lying too long concealed in the spiritual treasure-trove of the Mass. To follow him in his inspired excavations is an unforgettable spiritual adventure of discovery.

Book The Sacramental Vision of Edward Bouverie Pusey

Download or read book The Sacramental Vision of Edward Bouverie Pusey written by Tobias A. Karlowicz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a decisive challenge to the older reception of Pusey as a paragon of backwards scholarship, Tobias A. Karlowicz argues that Pusey is properly understood as a penetrating and original theologian whose work anticipated contemporary conversations about the nature of theology, and a pivotal figure in the history of Anglican theology. Karlowicz locates the heart of Pusey's project in a theological perception which looks through the physicality and concreteness of language, to discern Christ at the centre of both Scripture and the physical creation. This 'sacramental vision,' which grew from Pusey's critique of Christianity's decay and his formative engagement with patristic hermeneutics and ontology, forms his teaching on the sacraments as vehicles for a Christian life of eucharistic self-oblation in union with Christ, and demonstrates the relevance of his thought to contemporary theology.

  • Pages : 408 pages

Download or read book Vested Angels written by Maurice Basil McNamee and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mc Namee's detailed and well illustrated new study is about eucharistic symbolism in Early Netherlandish painting. It focuses on the pervading presence of the vested angel in this school of painting and its eucharistic significance. These angels, dressed in every possible variation of the vestements of the subministers of the traditional Solemn High Mass, are represented as serving the Christ in each episode of His life. The history of the vested angel is traced through numerous paintings representing scenes from the life of Christ' from the Annunciation through the Last Judgement. The theological basis of this study is offered in a discussion of Maurice de la Taille's Mysterium Fidei, a theory of Mass that best parallels the concept of Eucharistic symbolism in Early Netherlandish painting. Colour illustrations and over a hundred photographs of the original paintings help the reader to follow this fascinating analysis.
