Book The Mystery Animals of the British Isles

Download or read book The Mystery Animals of the British Isles written by Glen Vaudrey and published by Cfz. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mystery animals? Great Britain? Surely not. These are not phrases which would normally be thought of in the same sentance. But it is true. The zoogeorgraphy of the British Isles is not as hard and fast as one would have imagined; there are mystery big cats, sea monsters, strangely coloured variants of well known species, animals only known from a handful of specimens or even less, and a body of evidence to suggest that entire new species await discovery. The Fortean zoology of these islands is even more impressive, with dragons, monsters, ghostly animals and weird animal folklore. For the first time, all these subjects are being gathered together under one, somewhat eccentric, roof. The Mystery Animals of the British Isles is a major new series from CFZ Press, the publishing arm of the world's largest mystery animals research organisation. It will cover Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland, on a county by county basis, describing the mystery animals of the entire island group.

Book Beasts of Britain

Download or read book Beasts of Britain written by Andy McGrath and published by Hangar 1 Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beasts Of Britain is a book by Andy McGrath, a Cryptozoology 'enthusiast' who has spent over 25 years of researching and obsessing about the unknown creatures living right under our noses here on this tiny island in the North Atlantic. From a wildlife point of view, the accepted fauna of The British Isles were discovered and catalogued in their finite and immovable state in the 19th century. Nothing has really been added to this list or considered worthy since and the continual reports of Water Monsters, Bigfoot, Mystery Big Cats and U.F.C's (Unidentified Flying Cryptids) are largely ignored or used as newspaper fillers to entertain us. Andy's focus is on current research and sightings, pictures, videos and eyewitness accounts of the many cryptids of the British Isles. Although vast advancements in science and technology have brought great discoveries in other lesser known parts of the world, our island lies largely underexplored and overlooked. At night, outside of the busy cities and next to the unlit lakes and lonely mountains it is an island in darkness, where nobody ventures into the woods anymore and the pervading paradigm scare all but the most foolhardy scientists away from any serious investigation of the many yet to be discovered - Beasts Of Britain.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1921 edition. Excerpt: ...development in certain local races has enabled recent systematists to make five species out of this one. It has large and prominent dark eyes--for it is chiefly of nocturnal habits--and its long oval ears have the inner margin turned inwards at the base. The tail is dark brown above, and whitish below. It is the commonest of the British mammals in country places, but less frequent in Ireland. It is common in Europe as far north as Sweden and Norway. As a rule it constructs its burrows underground or under the roots of trees, and here it stores up great quantities of nuts, haws, grain, and smaller seeds for use in winter, when it becomes inactive, though it does not really hibernate. But if there is a house handy to which it can gain entrance in late autumn, it prefers to become the guest of those whose garden has been a boon to it through the spring and summer. We have had them spend the winter cosily in our rolled-up tennis nets, stowed away in a shed to keep them dry in the off-season; and as potatoes were stored in the same place they consumed a number of these. On several other occasions Wood Mice were detected attempting impudently to enter the dwelling house by the back-door. Once an entire family--mater, pater, and five active youngsters--succeeded in this enterprise; but they left incriminating evidence of their presence, though they were suspected of being ordinary House Mice. Accordingly a break-back trap, baited with cheese, was set one evening, and within half an hour its loud clap proclaimed its effectiveness. This trap appeared to show that the Wood Mouse is a simpleminded, unsuspecting creature, for it was reset with the same uneaten bit of cheese-rind for bait again and again, and no sooner was the trapper's back turned...
