Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Musical World, Vol. 36: January 2, 1858 We can no longer write like Bach and Handel we cannot do so, from deficiency on the one hand, and superfluity on the other. We are wanting in the creative wer to inspire, as they did, purely intellectual forms; an perhaps, too, in that trusting belief in the spirit which actuated these heroes when engaged in the task of creation. On the other hand, Haydn, osart, and, above all, Beethoven, have 0 ned for us the romantic domain of music in a manner of w ich the old authors had no notion, and the direction thus given to music has, in its turn, produced an abundance of musical means to which we are now so accustomed, that not to employ such a mine of wealth has become a perfect impossibility. Book The Musical World of Marie Antoinette

Download or read book The Musical World of Marie Antoinette written by Barrington James and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, eighteenth-century Paris had been declining into a baroque backwater. Spectacles at the opera, once considered fit for a king, had become "hell for the ears," wrote playwright Carlos Goldoni. Then, in 1774, with the crowning of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, Paris became one of the world's most vibrant musical centers. Austrian composer Christophe-Willibald Gluck, protege of the queen, introduced a new kind of tragic opera--dramatic, human and closer to nature. The expressive pantomime known as ballet d'action, forerunner of the modern ballet, replaced stately court dancing. Along the boulevards, people whistled lighter tunes from the Italian opera, where the queen's favorite composer, Andre Modeste Gretry, ruled supreme. This book recounts Gluck's remaking of the grand operatic tragedy--long symbolic of absolute monarchy--and the vehement quarrels between those who embraced reform and those who preferred familiar baroque tunes or the sweeter melodies of Italy. The turmoil was an important element in the ferment that led to the French Revolution and the beheading of the queen.

Book Research and Reform

Download or read book Research and Reform written by Richard A. Rempel and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first biologist to establish the study of genetics in a Canadian university, W.P. Thompson was a passionate advocate of science education whose impact extended far beyond his home province of Saskatchewan. In Research and Reform, Richard Rempel brings to light the life, times, and legacy of a brilliant and influential geneticist. Born and raised in rural Ontario, Thompson's thirst for knowledge took him from a largely self-educated youth to undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Toronto and Harvard, respectively, culminating in a successful career in the field of cytogenetics. The discoveries Thompson made working with wheat chromosomes spread across the country and brought him considerable renown within the scientific community. Research and Reform documents Thompson's revolutionary attempts to create a wheat hybrid resistant to fungal leaf rust - efforts supported by the Winnipeg Rust Laboratory, the National Research Council, and the Federal Department of Agriculture. Rempel also documents the sweeping curriculum reforms Thompson introduced to the University of Saskatchewan, first as dean of arts and sciences and later as president. Thompson's presidency demonstrated for the first time the depth of the constructive and cordial relationship that existed between Tommy Douglas's Cooperative Commonwealth Federation government and the university. Shedding light on Thompson's later years, Rempel describes how he became a key figure in the planning and establishment of Saskatchewan's 1962 Medicare legislation. An invaluable addition to the history of science and medicine in Canada, Research and Reform restores a Canadian scientist and educator to his rightful place in history.

Book The International Relations of Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book The International Relations of Sub Saharan Africa written by Ian Taylor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title examines Sub-Saharan Africa's relations with states such as the US, India, China, the EU, and Britain as well as with non-state actors. "The International Relations of Sub-Saharan Africa" is an in-depth examination Africa's place in global politics. The book provides a comprehensive and critical appraisal of the ways in which peace, prosperity, and democracy are being advanced (or restricted) by the activities of the great powers in Africa, including non-state actors, as well as who benefits from these policies and who does not. The book is a needed comparative study of the role of great powers and 'new' actors such as China and India in Africa within the wider context of neo-liberal hegemony. It fills a gap in the literature and will be of interest to any student of the continent. Its focus on external actors contributes to providing a fuller picture of Africa's place in the global political economy and how the continent interacts with the rest of the world. This is an essential work for anyone researching issues in international relations, comparative foreign policies, and African politics.
