Book excerpt: This text provides a framework for understanding higher education in the US and other western countries since the 1970s whereby the logic of the market place has increasingly come to dominate all arenas and, in context, the education system. The author calls this process "commodification" and he describes the transformation of universities in the US and elsewhere as they attempt to accomodate the enforced changes on their academic lives and those of their students.; The book chronicles changes with the increasing focus on career and the movement towards the instrumental functions of education; the financial crisis and the development of a more corporate approach to education; of consumption that produce universities heavy with expensive, well-equipped and powerful administrations and decreasing numbers of ever more disenfranchised faculty.

Book Shared Visions of Public Higher Education Governance

Download or read book Shared Visions of Public Higher Education Governance written by Edgar B. Schick and published by American Association of State Colleges & Universities Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies factors, structures, and procedures contributing to effective statewide coordination and governance of public colleges and universities. The heart of the book consists of descriptions of representative structures in 4 states, where interviews were conducted with 114 individuals--legislators, gubernatorial staff, system heads, coordinating board chief executives and senior staff members, governing board and coordinating board members, public college and university presidents, faculty members, news media representatives and business executives. Part I of the book offers an overview of statewide governance issues including how coordination and governance differ, a summary of the rationales offered for the trend toward centralization, a discussion of the two major types of systems, an investigation of the issues of institutional autonomy, and a report on the college and university presidency in the various structures under review. Part II offers descriptions of representative structures, in the four states visited, namely Ohio, Tennessee, Maine, and Pennsylvania, with analysis of what makes them effective in the eyes of their numerous constituents. Part III examines state perspectives on public higher education coordinating and governance structures, especially issues of quality and accountability. Part IV concludes with observations and recommendations. Appendixes contain information in 50 state structures, a list of those interviewed for the study, and 39 references. (JB)

Book The Control of the Campus

Download or read book The Control of the Campus written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governance in U.S. higher education is discussed, based on a 1982 survey of decision making in higher education with attention to its roots, the effects of current conditions on decision-making arrangements, and a possible governance framework for the future. While both private and public education are considered, the public sector is emphasized. Governance is defined as both formal decision arrangements and informal procedures by which standards are maintained. Information was obtained from a survey of decision-making in state higher education agencies, flagship universities, four-year colleges, and two-year colleges. After discussing the mission of universities, the tradition of self-regulation in American higher education is examined, including the governing board and voluntary accreditation. Also covered are outside governance connections (the state, the federal government, and the courts) that have significantly altered the mission and governance of higher education. It is concluded that, on balance, higher education's partnership with governments on both state and national levels has generated far more benefits than it has administrative burdens. However, because external influences on academic governance should not be allowed to overwhelm internal governance structures, colleges are urged to strengthen self-regulation capacity, to take leadership roles, and to revitalize their historic governance tradition. The survey questionnaire is included, together with a list of participating institutions and agencies. (SW) reprinted from ERIC.
