Book The Muleskinner and the Stars

Download or read book The Muleskinner and the Stars written by Ronald L. Voller and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-28 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the astronomer Milton La Salle Humason, whose career was integral to developing our understanding of stellar and universal evolution and who helped to build the analytical basis for the work of such notable astronomers and astrophysicists as Paul Merrill, Walter Adams, Alfred Joy, Frederick Seares, Fritz Zwicky, Walter Baade and Edwin Hubble. Humason’s unlikely story began on the shores of the Mississippi River in Winona, Minnesota, in 1891 and led to the foot of Mount Wilson outside Los Angeles, California, twelve years later. It is there where he first attended summer camp in 1903 and was captivated by its surroundings. The mountain would become the backdrop for his life and career over the next six decades as he helped first build George Ellery Hale’s observatory on the summit and then rose to become one of that institution’s leading figures through the first half of the twentieth century. The story chronicles Humason’s life on Mount Wilson, from his first trip to the mountain to his days as a muleskinner, leading teams of mules hauling supplies to the summit during the construction of the observatory, and follows him through his extraordinary career in spectroscopy, working beside Edwin Hubble as the two helped to reconstruct our concept of the universe. A patient, knowledgeable and persistent observer, Humason was later awarded an honorary doctorate for his work, despite having no formal education beyond the eighth grade. His skill at the telescope is legendary. During his career he photographed the spectra of stars, galaxies and other objects many thousands of times fainter than can be seen with the naked eye and pushed the boundary of the known universe deeper into space than any before him. His work, which included assisting in the formulation of Hubble’s Law of redshifts, helped to set the field of cosmology solidly on its foundation. Milton Humason was one of the most charismatic characters in science during the first half of the 20th century. Uneducated, streetwise, moonshining, roguish, humble and thoroughly down to earth, he rose by sheer chance, innate ability and incredible will to become the leading deep space observer of his day. “The Renaissance man of Mount Wilson,” as Harlow Shapley once referred to him, Humason’s extraordinary life reminds us that passion and purpose may find us at any moment.

Book excerpt: This book is the first thorough and overdue biography of one of the giants of science in the twentieth century, Jan Hendrik Oort. His fundamental contributions had a lasting effect on the development of our insight and a profound influence on the international organization and cooperation in his area of science and on the efforts and contribution of his native country. This book aims at describing Oort's life and works in the context of the development of his branch of science and as a tribute to a great scientist in a broader sense. The astronomer Jan Hendrik Oort from the Netherlands was founder of studies of the structure and dynamics of the Milky Way Galaxy, initiator of radioastronomy and the European Southern Observatory, and an important contributor to many areas of astronomy, from the study of comets to the universe on the largest scales.

Book Hubble Humason and the Big Bang

Download or read book Hubble Humason and the Big Bang written by Ron Voller and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-28 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Hubble and Humason is one for the ages—and in particular, the Cosmic Age. In this compelling book, science writer Ron Voller digs deep into how and why the two scientists continued to investigate their theory of universal expansion in the face of persistent doubt, contrary theories, and calamitous world events. The evolution of this dynamic duo’s tenuous friendship and professional partnership is in many ways as intriguing as their groundbreaking work on the evolution of the universe. The book therefore traces their lives from their childhoods into their burgeoning careers, revealing how a World War and their own personal differences stood in the way of initial cooperation. It then shows how despite all this, the two opposites eventually came together in the pursuit of something far greater than themselves. This grand story is inextricably interwoven with that of Albert Einstein, Willem de Sitter, and other great physicists of the era, all of whom took part in the staggering quest to make sense of the Big Bang and what followed. “Edwin Hubble has often been considered as an island of sorts—a lone wolf of astronomy. But Voller’s book shows otherwise, as he examines Milt Humason’s essential contributions to our understanding of the expanding universe.” - Daniel Lewis, Dibner Senior Curator, History of Science & Technology, The Huntington Library

In 35 stories she takes us to the winter ceremonies of New Mexico. We watch with her the ancient Zuni rite of the Shalako gods; we are lit by the glow of farolitos on adobe roofs and feel the crunch of clean snow in the mountain lanes. Best of all, we are taken through adobe doorways into the homes of friends and neighbors, like those of Tenorio Flat, where the welcome is warm and the way of life gentler perhaps than it is today. More than a Christmas book, this is a shining string of tales for all seasons.

Book excerpt: The year is 1916. The enemy, Pancho Villa, is elusive. Terrain is unforgiving. Through the mountains and across the long dry stretches of Mexico, Napoleon Childs, an aging cavalryman, leads an expedition of inexperienced horse soldiers on seemingly fruitless searches. Though he is seasoned at such missions, things go terribly wrong, and his patrol is suddenly at the mercy of an enemy intent on their destruction. After witnessing the demise of his troops, Napoleon is left by his captors to die in the desert. Through him we enter the conflicted mind of a warrior as he tries to survive against all odds, as he seeks to make sense of a lifetime of senseless wars and to reckon with the reasons a man would choose a life on the battlefield. Olmstead, an award-winning writer, has created a tightly wound novel that is as moving as it is terrifying.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have completed this manuscript Just Remember This, or as American Pop Singers 1900-1950+, about music before the 1950s in America. It perhaps offers knowledge and insights not previously found in other musical reference books. I have moreover been working on this book very meticulously over the past twelve-plus years. It started as a bit of fun and gradually became serious as I began to listen along with the vocalists of popular music, of the era before 1950, essentially just before the dawn of rock and roll. If you can call it that! Indeed genre and labeling of American music started here, and then from everywhere. While the old adage of always starting from somewhere could be noted in every century, the 1900s had produced the technology. Understanding the necessity, more so, finds a curiosity on the part of a general public hungry for entertainment, despite 6 day work weeks, World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II.

Book excerpt: This twisting tale, the sequel to the author’s “Ring Around the Sun,” takes Coot Boldt and Narlow Montgomery back to their childhood in the wilds of the Tularosa Basin of southern New Mexico Territory and west Texas. The story tracks their days tending Papa’s goats, and Narlow’s war with his copper-lined, half-Pale Eye-half-Comanche mama. The boys lived with the Apaches for two years where Narlow studied the mysteries of the medicineman. As young men, they enjoyed successes in ranching and land sales in El Paso, a dusty adobe village known for whiskey, shot-dead men on its streets, soiled doves, and rigged roulette wheels. Both their marriages went sour, and though Coot went on, Narlow was stuck with a wife who never allowed the consummation of their vows. All those months Narlow brushed off Coot’s advice to take up with a widow-lady, but during a trip to San Francisco, he fell into the clutches of a wealthy actress who demanded that he return home and divorce his wife. He refused, though he did return to El Paso and become the town drunk. Finally, he was convinced by his father and Coot to seek the solitude of a cave where, as a child, he had played with his father, a man who made sawhorses with straw-stuffed sock heads, eyes drawn with charcoal, and read the great books to his son. Narlow won his battle over the bottle. Includes Readers Guide.

Book Barryisms

Download or read book Barryisms written by Barry McAlister and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a ways I could see a huge boat mostly buried in the sand, while examining the boat it seemed to have been a cabin cruiser about 65 feet long. Then walking about 100 feet south of the boat I was stunned to find a human body, not something you see every day. The person was mostly a skeleton although hair was evident on his head; jeans and shirt were tattered and the skull looking toward the sky where I could see some primitive dental work. After a couple more frightening traverses, while hanging in space, I thought we had passed the most difficult situations, wrong again! We came to a place where youre climbing along the cliff face with no more than 4 inches of rock on which to place your feet. That accelerated my heartbeat a tad! While hiking on a narrow dike I came face to face with a Bison almost blocking my passage. As I walked past he charged me. I yelled Stop That! and he stopped about 2 feet away. Few people have a desire or capability to experience the edge. For most of my life I professed, To experience life as close to the edge as possible to death, as this is the only way to live a life to its fullest. Being up here, among 12,000 foot peaks, in the enchanting time before sunrise, will always remain as a consummate memory in my mind. I was filled with a delightful wonderment. Then there came the serene Alpine Glow as the sun embraced the mountain peaks. As John Muir would say, A noble experience. The sun would occasionally pop out, followed by dark clouds and usually hail or sleet. I didnt care; I was wet; in a numbing trance and reduced to taking baby steps forward-one step at a time. Around 6 pm I reached the road, which was back down at 10,000 feet. I had only traveled 8 miles, but on the most difficult trek of my life. We had chased the Gator near shore; I jumped from the boat in knee deep mud; struggling through the mud I grabbed the Gator with my left hand and immediately he came around and imbedded his teeth in my right arm. Just as quickly he let go and I loaded him into the boat. Mostly I was concerned with infection, but a little Rum in the holes took care of that.

Book 20 Mule Team Days in Death Valley

Download or read book 20 Mule Team Days in Death Valley written by Harold O. Weight and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The saga of the great mule teams and giant wagons that are today’s romantic symbol of Death Valley began long before the first muleskinner piloted his lumbering borax freighters out of the Big Sink. Its roots were in that night when Aaron and Rosie Winters crouched in their darkened camp at Furnace Creek and read their future in the green-flickering flame of burning borax. But its seed went farther back.” First published in 1955, this is a wonderful book on the mule team days in California’s Death Valley during the 19th century. It contains observations on the natural history of mules and muleskinners, and the mining of desert borax. There is also a reprint of Henry G. Hanks’ Report on Death Valley from 1883.
