Book excerpt: Orr Loveless is exactly where he knows he belongs, rescuing and training mules. Despite their reputation, which he feels is undeserved, he knows they are smart, sure footed, and great mounts for trail riding and outdoor adventures. The only thing he lacks is a human partner to share the work and the fun, but he knows his lifestyle is not likely to attract one. Jase Keller has returned to New Mexico, where his forgotten roots remain. With his high finance job destroying him, he desperately needs a big change for this vacation. Only Orr Loveless doesn’t seem to want to take him on a wilderness trip. When they go, it’s the opposite of the farm boy seeing the city for the first time. Jase discovers another life and it’s the one he wants to live ... with Orr by his side. Can Jase persuade a stubborn mule man like Orr that he doesn’t need to be “loveless” any longer?

Book excerpt: Jacky is a translator. He’s a bit of an eccentric. And he can’t quite understand why the alluring and beautiful girl at the bar wants to talk to him. Even more perplexing is the tattered book she carries with her but won’t let him touch. Written in an indecipherable language—even for him—it contains, quite impossibly, what appear to be photographs of her own murder. When she disappears hours later and the book comes into his possession, suspicion falls on him. Pursued by the police and armed with nothing but the book she has left behind, an unwavering determination, and the assistance of the world’s most annoying man, Jacky must race through Paris to solve the mystery and find the missing girl. A wholly original, comical tale of intrigue, betrayal and romance, this is the curious story of the world’s most enigmatic book.

Book excerpt: For us Cypriots poetry means the creation of anything, in this case structurally using words with specific meaning. The composition of poetry is, therefore, an art where words construct sentences, verses using metaphors and symbols, which in turn are based on imagination... A poem does not have to rhyme and yet it can be a stanza, a canto to a loved one, an ode to a hero, a sarcastic remark to emphasise the importance of a point made, an elegy composed to explain feelings arranged as a work of art. What prose can explain in three hundred pages, a poem (as a masterpiece) can express in one single page; with more meaning, using larger-than-life pictures describing timeless classic scenes, memorable events and bringing immortality to life itself. The poems included in this collection have endured time and kept the promise of including all that is described above. The subjects chosen, show such versatility that the reader will require time to read the elevated expression of thoughts and feelings.

Book Everything Is Cinema

Download or read book Everything Is Cinema written by Richard Brody and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2008-05-13 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From New Yorker film critic Richard Brody, Everything Is Cinema: The Working Life of Jean-Luc Godard presents a "serious-minded and meticulously detailed . . . account of the lifelong artistic journey" of one of the most influential filmmakers of our age (The New York Times). When Jean-Luc Godard wed the ideals of filmmaking to the realities of autobiography and current events, he changed the nature of cinema. Unlike any earlier films, Godard's work shifts fluidly from fiction to documentary, from criticism to art. The man himself also projects shifting images—cultural hero, fierce loner, shrewd businessman. Hailed by filmmakers as a—if not the—key influence on cinema, Godard has entered the modern canon, a figure as mysterious as he is indispensable. In Everything Is Cinema, critic Richard Brody has amassed hundreds of interviews to demystify the elusive director and his work. Paying as much attention to Godard's technical inventions as to the political forces of the postwar world, Brody traces an arc from the director's early critical writing, through his popular success with Breathless, to the grand vision of his later years. He vividly depicts Godard's wealthy conservative family, his fluid politics, and his tumultuous dealings with women and fellow New Wave filmmakers. Everything Is Cinema confirms Godard's greatness and shows decisively that his films have left their mark on screens everywhere.

Book excerpt: Critically acclaimed throughout Spain, and now available for the first time in English, this tender, satirical novel vividly captures the intrinsic absurdity of war--and the joys of true friendship in a place where it is difficult to distinguish man from beast. Juan Castro Prez is a simple muleteer caught in the brutal Spanish Civil War. Never far from his closest companion--a stray mule named Valentina whom he is determined to keep for himself after the war--Juan engages in the low-brow drinking escapades, long shots at love, and an otherwise droning existence shared by his compatriots. As he lies, cheats, and steals to protect Valentina during his improbable odyssey home, Juan unwittingly "fights" for both sides--and becomes a reluctant and unlikely hero of the people, exploited by opportunistic journalists desperately trying to convince the Spanish public that the war is under control, when it is anything but....

Book Marks Martin and the Mule Train

Download or read book Marks Martin and the Mule Train written by Hilliard Lawrence Lackey and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marks, Martin and the Mule Train is a third person chronicle of Marks, Mississippi as the origin of the Mule Train component of the 1968 Poor People's Campaign. The book begins with the backdrop of living conditions in Marks, a small town in the Mississippi Delta, mired in abject poverty during the transition period when farm implements displaced field hands. More than half of area residents had left the cotton fields to work in factories up north. But those that stayed home were devoid of jobs and many were hungry. It was this pervasive sense of hopelessness and widespread hunger that struck Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during his two visits to Marks in 1966. His first visit was made to preach the funeral of a marcher who had suffered a heart attack while engaged in the James Meredith March Against Fear from Memphis, TN to Jackson, MS. Allegedly, Dr. King asked some black junior youth what they were going to be when they grew up. Their responses drew tears from the Civil Rights leader when summarily they acknowledged no future because of their skin color. The second visit also aroused tears empathy when Dr. King and Dr. Ralph David Abernathy watched a teacher feed her students four apples and a box of crackers for lunch. Southern public schools declined to accept federal aid for free and reduced meals to sidestep integration. These observations in Marks convinced Dr. King to follow the suggestion of Marian Wright Edelman to lead a Poor Peoples Campaign for jobs and justice. Dr. Abernathy writes in his book And the Walls Came Tumbling Down, that Dr. King wanted the Poor Peoples Campaign to begin at the end of the world, in Marks, Mississippi. And so it did. Even though Dr. King was assassinated on April 14, 1968, his inspired Mule Train left Marks on May 14, 1968. The 1, 000 mile journey took a month to complete but 28 wagons pulled by 56 mules paraded down Pennsylvania Avenue on Juneteenth (June 19)1968 as the centerpiece of the Poor Peoples Campaign. The Mule Train fulfilled one of Dr. Kings dreams.
