Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No general history of southern farming since the end of slavery has been published until now. For the first time, Gilbert C. Fite has drawn together the many threads that make up commercial agricultural development in the eleven states of the old Confederacy, to explain why agricultural change was so slow in the South, and then to show how the agents of change worked after 1933 to destroy the old and produce a new agriculture. Fite traces the decline and departure of King Cotton as the hard taskmaster of the region, and the replacement of cotton by a somewhat more democratically rewarding group of farm products: poultry, cattle, swine; soybeans; citrus and other fruits; vegetables; rice; dairy products; and forest products. He shows how such crop changes were related to other developments, such as the rise of a capital base in the South, mainly after World War II; technological innovation in farming equipment; and urbanization and regional population shifts. Based largely upon primary sources, Cotton Fields No More will become the standard work on post-Civil War agriculture in the South. It will be welcomed by students of the American South and of United States agriculture, economic, and social history.

Book Beyond Forty Acres and a Mule

Download or read book Beyond Forty Acres and a Mule written by Debra A. Reid and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2012-06-10 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection chronicles the tumultuous history of landowning African American farmers from the end of the Civil War to today. Each essay provides a case study of people in one place at a particular time and the factors that affected their ability to acquire, secure, and protect their land. The contributors walk readers through a century and a half of African American agricultural history, from the strivings of black farm owners in the immediate post-emancipation period to the efforts of contemporary black farm owners to receive justice through the courts for decades of discrimination by the U.S Department of Agriculture. They reveal that despite enormous obstacles, by 1920 a quarter of African American farm families owned their land, and demonstrate that farm ownership was not simply a departure point for black migrants seeking a better life but a core component of the African American experience.

Book Feral Animals in the American South

Download or read book Feral Animals in the American South written by Abraham H. Gibson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between humans and domestic animals has changed in dramatic ways over the ages, and those transitions have had profound consequences for all parties involved. As societies evolve, the selective pressures that shape domestic populations also change. Some animals retain close relationships with humans, but many do not. Those who establish residency in the wild, free from direct human control, are technically neither domestic nor wild: they are feral. If we really want to understand humanity's complex relationship with domestic animals, then we cannot simply ignore the ones who went feral. This is especially true in the American South, where social and cultural norms have facilitated and sustained large populations of feral animals for hundreds of years. Feral Animals in the American South retells southern history from this new perspective of feral animals.

Book Memoirs of a Mule Rider

Download or read book Memoirs of a Mule Rider written by Macon Jefferys and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-03 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Misty memories of a boy born to a poor sharecroper in the worst economic depression the world has ever known come to life with dramatic clarity in this troublihng memoir. Trapped into surviving on the pittance realized by his family for growing the deadly health killing tobacco plant, Jeff struggles to understand the societal contradictions that control his existence throughout the twentieth century. Imagination and dreamy fantasies fertilize larger hopes for him as he plows his father's lonely fields and wrestles with the arbitrary behavioral imnperatives that control his life. Cruelly deprived of broad cultural stimulation, Jeff struggles to realize dreams fostered by Hollywood myths and pulp fiction. Plentiful food--a gift of the land--adequate housing and most of all, a pervassive love and caring concern by others sharing this coimmunity of poverty and hard work, not only are sustaining but give him sweet lasting memories of those hard times. Anger at deprivations endured by his parents fuel ambitions to escape a life growing the noxious crops of tobacco. Nourished by the love, warmth and generosity of a large extended family living a similar life, Jeff survives to engage the larger world where he encounters the many problems that befall allhuman beings.
