Book God of the Storm There Stood by me this Night

Download or read book God of the Storm There Stood by me this Night written by Burliss E. Parker and published by eBooks2go, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “So when the ship was caught, and could not head into the wind, we let her drive” (Acts 27:15). The meaning here is that the storm was so powerful they surrendered control of the ship to the storm. This book has been in the making for over twenty years. I have observed and experienced the storms of life, the unplanned and unexpected changes that blow into our lives and change the direction we were going. Everyone experiences storms in their lives. Storms can be caused by your own conduct or by the actions of others. Storms can be a satanic attack or just the events of life. It is difficult to see God’s plans in the storm. However, if He has a job for us to accomplish for Him, He will bring the circumstances into our lives to take us where He wants us. “For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve” (Acts 27:23). What a wonderful promise! We do not go through the storms of life alone! He is always with us. Remember the storms of life are never bigger than the God we serve!

Book excerpt: At long last Joanna Bennett is returning to her family’s island, the childhood home that her heart has yearned for ever since she was forced to the mainland by catastrophe. At her side stands Nils Sorensen, her oldest friend, stalwart admirer, and new husband. Together they will restore Bennett’s Island to its former glory: enticing former residents and other hardworking mainlanders to join their small community, repairing damaged buildings pummeled by the elements during five years of abandonment, and reclaiming the lobstering territory that was once the sole province of islanders but has been overrun by the nearby Brigporters. All the while, Joanna and Nils are setting the foundation of their future, one that will surely be stormy if Joanna tries to apply the rules of her previous marriage to her relationship with Nils. Joanna Bennett will always be a strong and fiercely independent woman, but without learning to trust and be vulnerable in her marriage, she will find herself proud and alone. This story, the second book in Elisabeth Ogilvie’s beloved Tide Trilogy, transports readers to the beautiful and rugged Maine coast, where families must eke their livelihoods from the tempestuous ocean but in return they’re afforded the daily splendor and simple pleasures of island life.

Book excerpt: The women in an Arctic village must survive a sinister threat after all the men are wiped out by a catastrophic storm in this "gripping novel inspired by a real-life witch hunt. . . . Beautiful and chilling" (Madeline Miller, bestselling author of Circe). When the women take over, is it sorcery or power? Finnmark, Norway, 1617. Twenty-year-old Maren Magnusdatter stands on the craggy coast, watching the skies break into a sudden and reckless storm. All forty of the village’s men were at sea, including Maren’s father and brother, and all forty are drowned in the otherworldly disaster. For the women left behind, survival means defying the strict rules of the island. They fish, hunt, and butcher reindeer—which they never did while the men were alive. But the foundation of this new feminine frontier begins to crack with the arrival of Absalom Cornet, a man sent from Scotland to root out alleged witchcraft. Cornet brings with him the threat of danger—and a pretty, young Norwegian wife named Ursa. As Maren and Ursa are drawn to one another in ways that surprise them both, the island begins to close in on them, with Absalom's iron rule threatening Vardø's very existence. "The Mercies has a pull as sure as the tide. It totally swept me away to Vardø, where grief struck islanders stand tall in the shadow of religious persecution and witch burnings. It's a beautifully intimate story of friendship, love and hope. A haunting ode to self-reliant and quietly defiant women." (Douglas Stuart, Booker Prize winning author of Shuggie Bain)

Book Once Upon a Gypsy Moon

Download or read book Once Upon a Gypsy Moon written by Michael Hurley and published by Center Street. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Hurley watched his world unravel in the wake of infidelity, divorce and failure. In August 2009, he was short of money, out of a job, and seeking to salvage a life that had foundered. Deeply in need of perspective, he took to the open seas in a 32-foot sailboat, Gypsy Moon. The story of his 2-year outward odyssey, deterred by rough weather and mechanical troubles, combines keen observation, poignant thoughts, and deeper introspection with glorious prose. Once Upon a Gypsy Moon also presents a rare and much-needed point of view on the familiar spiritual-journey narrative. It offers a star-crossed love story wrapped inside a rollicking good sea tale, but it also has something important to say to the reader about relationships, faith and disbelief, life and death, love and marriage, and what really matters.
