Book Reading the Mountains of Home

Download or read book Reading the Mountains of Home written by John Elder and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small farms once occupied the heights that John Elder calls home, but now only a few cellar holes and tumbled stone walls remain among the dense stands of maple, beech, and hemlocks on these Vermont hills. Reading the Mountains of Homeis a journey into these verdant reaches where in the last century humans tried their hand and where bear and moose now find shelter. As John Elder is our guide, so Robert Frost is Elder's companion, his great poem "Directive" seeing us through a landscape in which nature and literature, loss and recovery, are inextricably joined. Over the course of a year, Elder takes us on his hikes through the forested uplands between South Mountain and North Mountain, reflecting on the forces of nature, from the descent of the glaciers to the rush of the New Haven River, that shaped a plateau for his village of Bristol; and on the human will that denuded and farmed and abandoned the mountains so many years ago. His forays wind through the flinty relics of nineteenth-century homesteads and Abenaki settlements, leading to meditations on both human failure and the possibility for deeper communion with the land and others. An exploration of the body and soul of a place, an interpretive map of its natural and literary life, Reading the Mountains of Home strikes a moving balance between the pressures of civilization and the attraction of wilderness. It is a beautiful work of nature writing in which human nature finds its place, where the reader is invited to follow the last line of Frost's "Directive," to "Drink and be whole again beyond confusion."

Book From the Mountain From the Valley

Download or read book From the Mountain From the Valley written by James Still and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Still first achieved national recognition in the 1930s as a poet. Although he is better known today as a writer of fiction, it is his poetry that many of his essential images, such as the "mighty river of earth," first found expression. Yet much of his poetry remains out of print or difficult to find. From the Mountain, From the Valley collects all of Still's poems, including several never before published, and corrects editorial mistakes that crept into previous collections. The poems are presented in chronological order, allowing the reader to trace the evolution of Still's voice. Throughout, his language is fresh and vigorous and his insight profound. His respect for people and place never sounds sentimental or dated. Ted Olson's introduction recounts Still's early literary career and explores the poetic origins of his acclaimed lyrical prose. Still himself has contributed the illuminating autobiographical essay "A Man Singing to Himself," which will appeal to every lover of his work. James Still, the first poet laureate of Kentucky, recipient of two Guggenheim Fellowships and many other awards and honors, is the author of numerous works, including his masterful novel River of Earth. Ted Olson, associate professor of Appalachian studies and English at East Tennessee State University, is the author of Blue Ridge Folklife and the editor of CrossRoads: A Southern Culture Annual.

Book Prayers That Moved Mountains Still Move Mountains

Download or read book Prayers That Moved Mountains Still Move Mountains written by Florence Mutambanengwe and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-01-09 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was a small child, my grandfather made whole family pray. I remember that some of the family members used to get tired of praying everyday. They would run away from the main farm house and hide. However, that would not stop granddad Maxin Mwanyenya Mutambanengwe. It was like some fire had been put on him. He would pick up his walking stick and go round all the outer buildings as though he was hunting for a thief. Why did he do that everyday? He would come back with all the boys who were hiding from him. Only then would the prayers start. He never got tired of this activity. Even if only one of the boys was not there he would stop and go and look for him. Now I know he was actually fighting with the devil. I am sure he used to chase the devil away from all his grandchildren. We had the bible but in those days he is the one who read the bible for us. He loved singing therefore we had a praise and worship session and then read from the word of God. Then he would pray and dismiss everyone. Now that I know, I hope Prayers that Moved Mountains Still Move Mountains will be of assistance to those families that wish to have prayers on a daily basis. Just as reference to how these people prayed and how their prayers were answered. Prayers that Moved Mountains Still Move Mountains is a selection of powerful prayers. Men of God prayed and these prayers were answered in most miraculous ways. God will answer you just as he answered those powerful men and women. He has answered my minor and major prayers. Jesus offered prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears.

Book In the Mist of the Mountains Classic Reprint

Download or read book In the Mist of the Mountains Classic Reprint written by Ethel Turner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Mist of the Mountains Still you continue to look in front of you as far as may be. And the next moment the veil lifts, clean up over your head perhaps, and you see it rolling away on the wind to one side of you, yards and yards of flying white gossamer, its ragged edges catching in the trees. And now your gaze leaps and lingers, and lingers and leaps for miles in front Of you. You look downward and the ball of the earth has split at your feet and the huge fissure has widened and widened till a limitless valley lies there. You look down hundreds of feet and see like sprouting seedlings the tops of gum trees, - gum trees two hundred feet high. The far Side of the valley shows a rolling mountain chain washed in in tender shades of purple, paling nearer at hand to blue, the tender indescribable mountain blue. Great jagged headlands hang perilously over the deep, and the Silver thread of a distant water fall gleams here and there down the face of the gorges of whose wonderful beauty the tourist has heard and comes thousands of miles to see. A billowy cloud, soft and dazzling as snow, has fallen from the sky or risen with the mist. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Book of Mountains and Rivers

Download or read book The Book of Mountains and Rivers written by Qiuyu Yu and published by Cn Times Books Incorporated. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yu Qiuyu is one of China's greatest modern essayists. Sometimes a prickly commentator, he is above all a storyteller. In this volume he takes his inspiration from China's geography, both human and physical, and brings the culture of his country to life with human characters and historical narrative. The forests of Hainan, the Three Gorges, classical pagodas, ancient remains under modern Shanghai, even the open skies... all have their stories and cultural connections, traced with erudition and wit by an inquisitive mind. "I sought a path across mountains and rivers, plastering my brief life across a rugged corner of this planet," explains Yu Qiuyu. The Book of Rivers and Mountains is another in a series of meditative essays about Chinese culture and history. In this book he returns to the Chinese mainland in contemplation of its people and the natural landscape that has shaped their way of life. He refers to mountains and rivers as the "facial expressions of the land" and the only true way of understanding the history of the country and its people.
